THE DIARY OF A FRESHMAN
WHAT’S THE USE?
JANUARY 1—This morningr while
I was eating breakfast, Dad came in
and said Where’s my umbreller?
Can’t you find it. Mother Sed. No,
sed Dad. Well, I sed, Mr. Flams
must have taken it last nite because
when he was starting to go I heard
him say to sister, well, dear, I guess
I’ll just have to steal one. Sister
blushed and left the table in a hurry.
JANUARY 3—Today in Civics my
teacher was explaining something to
me and at the last she sed. Have you
got it all in your head now? I sed,
yes I have it all in a nut-shell. The
class laffed, me not seeing ennything
funny.
JANUARY 5— Today my teacher
gave two test papers back to me, I
got A on one and B on the other. Me
feeling pretty good and walking
down the hall looking at the papers
I passed a boy with a tan and or
ange sweater on (he had very funny
hair.) He sed, you ought to be
ashamed of yourself making Awful
and Bad. Me feeling pretty bad
about it I tore the papers up so Dad
wouldn’t see them.
JANUARY 8—Today my teecher
ast me if I had red an article on how
to Improve your memory. 1 sed no,
I forget to do it. She laffed but I did
not think it was very funny as I had
to stay in and read it.
BET’S PREPARE
The Christmas days are gone we know
And as they go, comes ice and snow;
But more dreadful yet comes exam
time.
With hard study to make those les
sons rhyme.
And if we fail with our knowiedge,
There’s no use to sigh, for we can’t
enter college;
And then there’s a cry with many a
tear.
As we see what has happened, and be
gin to fear.
And so as the new year comes along.
Let’s all make a resolve to never go
wrong;
With study hard, let’s do our best.
And try hard to come out, above the
rest.
Did you ever stop to think what
you do and why you do it? Don’t,
for it’s only a waste of the gray
matter you are supposed to have in
your brain.
What’s the use of leaving your
warm, comfy bed about seven
o’clock on a cold frosty morning
when you might just as well stay
there until ten or noon?
What’s the use of eating? If you
eat sparingly, you feel empty and
if you eat ali you want, you either
get fat or sick.
What’s the use of studying? You
either have a good lesson, recited
well and are dubbed a teacher’s pet
or a studious person, or you study
the wrong lesson and flunk.
What’s the use of studying a book?
If it is written by a famous author
and is of educational value, it just
makes you see and feel yOur ignor
ance. If it’s a love story, it make
you feel homesick. If it’s a murder,
you have nightmares ali night.
What’s the use of going anywhere
when you have to walk? Do you
know how dangerous it is to cross a
street? Do you know how many
fatai accident occurred last year,) a
good year book will inform you) ?
Do you know how many people were
killed this year?
Do you know how dangerous it
is to start a fire? Weli, if you don’t
some insurance agent will tell you.
What’s the use?
What’s the use of ^'etting new
clothes? Somebody else will have
better ones, or will think they have,
or your’s will be like some other
persons.
What’s the use of falling in love?
He either loves you and you get
married and then you wish you
hadn’t or he doesn’t love you and
you don’t get ma’rried but wish you
had.

So nigh is grandeur to our dust.
So near is God to man.

The youth replies, “I can.”
