Hl-y CLUB IN CHARGE
Of CHAPEL PROGRAM
The H-Y Club had char.ije of the
program for this week and interest
ing programs were rendered.
On Monday the program was in
charge of Auburn Woods. Fred Wil
son read the scripture, after which
we were led in prayer by Dick Wal-
ser. A speech ^vas delivered by
Auburn Woods on “Clean speech and
play.” But perhaps the feature
whclh delighted everyone most was
the H-Y Trio composed of Paul
Hutchins, John Hunter and Lester
Everhart.
Tuesday we were calied to chapel
to hear our debating team before
they went to Mount Airy, Friday.
With Louise Thompson and Dick
Waiser on the affirmative and
Stephanie Bragaw and Cloyd Phil-
pott on the negative we do not see
why we shouid not win.
On Wednesday another interesting
program was given by the H-Y Club,
with Jimmy Siceloff in charge.’
Harold Smith read the scripture and
then Clifton Conrad led in prayer.
A very interesting speaker was then
introduced. Mt. Spruill, who made
a splendid talk on “Laws and Vio
lation."
Thursday the H-Y Club secured
the consent of the Duke University
Crlee Club to come and entertain us
for half an hour. Two beautiful
selections were given by the orches
tra, which were enthusiastically ap
plauded.

For the first time Lexington will
send a representation of track men
next week to Chapel Hill to compete
in the High School State Track Meet
At the same time our tennis team"
and our debating teams will be com
peting with teams from all parts of
the state.
We may not win any of the state
championship cups this year but we
intend to make some of the other
teams work harder than they have
ever worked before. So. come on
teams let’s bring some kind of a cup
to Lexington this year—If we can’t
win in the state contests let’s make
it hard for all of them in the County
contests.
LEXINGTON HI DOUBLE

Carl “Yes, but I alway.s dread the
beginning.
Virginia .“Just think, three thous
and seals were used to make fur
coats”.
Frances “Isn’t It wonderful that
they can train animals to do such
work”?
Last Thursday night, several mem
bers of the Lexington Hi-Y Club
drove over to Thomasville and at
tended what was to be a tri-city
Hi-Y Banquet. But although the
High Point boys were unable to come
over, the members of the Thomas
ville and Lexington clubs enjoyed
themselves very much. The Ban
quet was prepared by the mothers of
the Thomasville Hi-Y boys and they
were praised by each of the speakers,
as were also the pretty bar-maids,
who gave excellent service. Liston
Po])e of the Thomasville Hi-Y club
made a splendid talk on the subject
“tVliiat Hi-Y means to me.” Mr.
I’ esperman. State Secret.ary for Hi Y
club, was also present and gave an
interesting talk. For the Lexington
Elub, Mr. Allen, Mr. Estes and Au
burn Woods made speeches. Every
one of the Lexington Boys had a fine
time and ,., e hope that more of these
Inter-cit- meetings will be held in
the full
Last Friday evening,. March 27,
Lexington again stood the test and
for the fourth consecutive year will
send four debaters to Chape! Hill to
contend in the contest for the Aycock
Memorial Cup.
Louise Thompson and Dick Waiser
upholding the affirmative side of
question "Resolved: That N. C. Should
Ratify the Port Terminals and Water
Transportation Act”, won over Sue
May Hendren and Calvin '.Roves, the
negative team from Mt. Airy.
Mhile this debate was in progress
our negative team composed of Steph
anie Bragaw and Cloyd Philpott de
feated North Wilkesboro’s aflflrma-
tive team, Percy Waters and Thomas
Bryan upheld the affirmative side at
North Wilkesboro. The negative
te-am was accomp('anied to North
Wilkesboro by Mfes Mildred Zimmer
man and Mr. E. C. Hunt.
We are especially proud of win
ning the debates this year because
of the handicaps under which we
labored. Two speakers contracted
the mumps which caused loss of time
and continual substitution. Al.so,
material was hard to get on the sub-’
ject.
Ail Lexington should be proud of
her debaters who have won both ot
the debates for four consecutive year.s,
and they should be especially proud
of them this year since thev had to
combat “mumps”, “danger of fatigue”
etc.
So. all hall to the debittors! We
wish them luck ne.xt week when they
journey to Chapel Hill.
Cloyd “I wish I could reform the
.'Uphabet”.
Louise—"'Why, dear?”
Cloyd—“Because I would put “u”
and “I” closer together”.
Nat “Where do you have the mo.st
lifficulty in making a speech”?
Charlie—“In my knees”.
Mary Lil—“Ham, you certainly eat
V ell”.
Ham I ought to, I’va been prac
ticing all my life”.
