The in stallation ceremony was very impres sive with it’s lighted candles and “Largo.” Mr. Bullock gave his con gratulations to new members and en couraged those who did not get in by telling them to work for another chance. Being a member of L. H. S. Honor Society is the highest privilege bestow ed on any student. To the new mem bers—keep the standards set in front of you and keep going as an example to the other students. To the ones “left behind this time”—keep working; don’t give up. There is always an other chance. Old members include Odessa Snow, Marguerite Thomason and Joe Bower. *. LIBRARY OBSERVES NATIONAL BOOK WEEK National Book Week was celebrated last week in our school by conducting a poster contest illustrating favorite books. Sixty-two students entered posters in the contest, a number of these posters showing real talent as well as hard work. The first prize, consisting of a pass to the Carolina Theater for one week, was won by Betsy Harris, who chose “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” to illustrate. Sec ond prize was won by Joan Sink for her poster illustrating “Forgive Us Our Trespasses,” while third prize was won by Christine Lambeth for her poster on “Around the World in Eleven Years.” Both second and third prizes consisted of a pass to the Carolina for two days. All of the posters were ex hibited in the study halls where they attracted much attention. In addition to the poster contest, a play was presented in chapel on Thursday entitled “Trial of Tom Saw yer and Huckleberry Finn.” In this play the leading roles were taken by Jimmy Myers and Harry Lee Collins, who portrayed the same characters that they played in the Dramatic Club play, “The Adventures of Tom Saw yer.” GIRL RESERVES PLAN PROGRAM At the first Girl Reserve meeting on Tuesday night, November 9, the program plan for the coming year was given by Miss Craven, the advisor. These programs had been decided upon by the program committee with Odes sa Snow as chairman. Interesting and helpful subjects such as books, eti quette, style, movies and famous wom en are being used. Outside speakers, well informed on certain topics have been asked to discuss them at the meetings. The plan does not exclude girls from having a chance to take part, for many programs have been worked out for this purpose. Though no one topic or goal has been set for the club to work toward, the commit tee feels that these programs will make the girls want to come to the meetings, and to learn something af ter they get there. MRS. HEDRICK IN HOSPITAL November 5, to enter Duke Hospital for an operation. Mrs. Hedrick is head of the English department of Lexing ton High School. During her leave of absence Mrs. Ralph Moffitt is sub stituting for her. It is reported that Mrs. Hedrick is improving fast, and will probably be with us again after the Christmas holidays. Two hun dred seventeen high schools from Asheville to Elizabeth City have in stalled Beta Clubs during the last four years. The Beta Club is a service club for outstanding high school students. It represents much the same to leaders in our high schools that the civic clubs do to outstanding business and professional men. The national or ganization carries on a program of continuous activity and service in each of the local units. In addition to this the National Beta Club awards each year a cash scholarship of one hun dred dollars to the outstanding mem ber in each congressional district of a state. Also the Beta Club has an Educational Endowment Fund created to aid worthy members who are fi nancially unable to continue their education after graduation from high school. Dr. Sidney Hall, State superintend ent of education of Virginia is the national present of the Beta Club this year. North Carolina is represented in the national board of directors by Dr. Frank P. Graham, Mr. Clyde A. Erwin, State Superintendent of Pub lic Instruction, Prof. William T. Long, of Cleveland, and Mr. Watkins, who installed the local club. The following jxmiors and seniors comprise the charter membership of the local chapter: Margaret Broadway, Mary Louise Lumsden, Mary Belle Forcum, Eunice Washburii, Maxine Leonard, Helen Brown, Ruth Sink, Sara Dickerson, Betty Witherspoon, Joan Sink, Virginia Smith, Juanita Tussey, Fred Harris, Douglas Horner, Douglas Lopp, Jimmie Myers, Betsy Moffitt, Lewis Farmer, Kenneth Rhodes and Charles Elkin. JUNIORS SELECT CLASS RINGS One of the events looked forward to by all juniors is getting class rings. From the three selections made by the ring committee on Tuesday, the class voted to get rings with a red set. A majority of notes for either the blue or the red set ring was never obtained because the votes were so evenly di vided. Although the class of ’38 chose red set rings, the juniors this year finally decided on rings with a simi lar set. Juniors will probably receive the rings about Christmas time. Friday night, November 19, the Lex ington High School Dramatic Club presented their first production, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” This play, taken from Mark Twain’s im mortal story was a great success in Lexington. A large audience saw the cast selected from the Dramatic Club give an excellent performance. Tom Sawyer as played by Jimmy Myers, was truly the character so beloved by many. Jimmy gave a fine characteri zation. Mildred King starred as Becky Thatcher, Tom’s sweetheart. Aunt Polly was portrayed by Velna Tetter. E. H. Easter gave an excellent characterization of Sidney, the tattle tale, and Susy Harper, Betty Wither spoon, the little Miss-know-it-all. Evelyn Allen played the part of Widow Douglas and made a big hit. Harry Lee Collins played the part of Huck Finn with perfection. Ruth Sink played the part of Tom’s cousin, Mary, very good. Billy Hankins gave a very good characterization of Nigger Jim and Fred Harris the sheriff. Virginia Beck was a hit in the part of Mrs. Harper and Paul Craver in the part of Joe Harper, Tom’s and Huck’s pal. Special commendation should be given the electricians who worked long hours to obtain the excellent lighting effects. The Dramatic class was in charge of the decorating of the stage and appreciate the cooperation of several local firms that helped them out. The Dramatic Club will present an other play in the near future and hope it will be as big a success as Tom Sawyer. HI-Y BOYS TO ATTEND CONFERENCE Several boys of the L. H. S.
