Page 8 THE LEXHIPEP October 4, 1946 Here They Are! You high school students at home or abroad this summer surely saw some of omr alumni. It seemed natural to see the college students home for the summer. It was also good to see the ex-G.I.’s home from the war,’ and do you know where these folks are this fall? Lexington High School should be proud of its alumni because a day does not pass unless one of the names of our former football boys is mentioned in the papers. They are in colleges all over the south and just remember they had their start on Holt-Moffitt field. So just glance over the sport page in any of the papers and I’m sure that you will find an L.H.S. Alumnus. Some of our former “heroes”, who are at Catawba this year are Lee Spears, Rusty Graver, Prank King, and Nig Lambeth. All of these boys kept L.H.S. on top, and they are really doing a fine job in college. “Gappy” Curtis and “Chip” Clark are Clemson boys this year and are doing alright. Chip is captain of the Tigers.. “Dirty” Everhart, Jimmy Holman and Bill Myers are at Carolina. Chil Lohr is, too! Don Winecoff and Vestal Everhart are entering State this year. Betty McCrary, Jeanne IWilliamson, Pearl Hege Reynolds, and Mrs. Hoyt Sink the former Jackie Thomason, be gan their senior year at Greensboro College this fall. At Meredith College Jean Griffith begins her senior year, Catherine Darker her junior, and Jackie Har- binson her freshman year. Helen Spruill and Martha Brannock returned to Salem where Helen is a rising junior and Martha is a rising sophomore. Penny McCrary and Mary Ella Roth- rock entered Duke as sophomores. Fletcher Wall, Jr., returned early for football practice. W.C.U.N.C. claims many L.H.S. soph omores. They are Jean Coggins, Adele Holman, Betty Blackwelder, Barbara Strelitz, Betsy Raper, Sue Leonard and Patsy Gordon. This is only a small majority of the boys and girls in college, but where- ever you are, L.H.S. still claims you and is proud of you. AS I SEE IT We students are really lucky this year to be so fortunate as to have such nice new teachers. They are truly fine ones, and we welcome them all to Lexington High School. A good teacher is a teacher who can control the class without shouting at the stud ents. The way to gain attention is to lower the voice rather than raise it. Also a tip to one or two of the eighth grade teachers: don’t work your stud ents too much; give them a little time for something else besides school. Some of them take your assignments seriously and try to do all you say. The LEXHIPEP certainly did have a nice program the other day, and we can easily see why. It was put on by E. H. Easter, one of our most outstand ing alumni, and he certainly did a fine job! How would you all like to have some more like that? I thought it was one of the best we’ve had in years. Also some of our high school talent made it much better. Let us know if you want some more. Rumors have it that we’re going to have some picture show reels of com munity sings at our assemblies. I hope everybody will be in a singing mood, for it is really a lot of fun. The school is renting the film and the Auditorium Theatre is showing us the courtesy of running them. Thank you, Mr. Austell. I guess you all know that from time to time our school has tried desperate ly to grow some grass on what little front lawn we have. This can’t be pos sible unless we, the students, quit walking and sitting all over the grass. We all know that our school should look its best, so let’s give the grass a chance to grow. It might help the looks of our school and we certainly do need immprovement. Carolina was awfully nice to all the seniors this year by giving them a free pass to see the Carolina-V.P.I game. From all the reports I’ve heard everyone certainly did have a good time and would like another chance from Chapel Hill or any other college game. I think it would be a fair ges' ture if some other college would do OPEN FORUM Dear Students, For a number of years in L.H.S. pep meetings have been in vogue; but re cently the conduct in these meetings has been outrageous. Besides being ex tremely impolite, the students have given the public appearance of being most uncooperative. The cheerleaders are striving hard to make a success of these meetings, but so far little pro gress has been made toward this suc cess. Every possible type of rudeness has been displayed at these half hour gatherings; and the conduct has been so disorderly that it has been stated that pep meetings will be discontinued unless some improvement is made by the students attending. Loud whistling and yelling at this time is certainly most appropriate but there is a special time for quiet ness. Too much of anything spoils the fun that it had originally offered. Such is the way with continous clapping and yelling; too much of it becomes monotonous or boring and it detracts from the main features of the program such as the pep talks of the coaches or the captains. Vigorous and enthusiastic pep meet ings have been annual occurrences in the past in our school because a foot ball game isn’t just isn’t a football game without pep. In the future let’s everyone strive to improve our con duct and strive to be followers in our pep meetings rather than leaders, for, after all, aren’t our cheerleaders the leaders? AN INTERESTED FAN this. Also it’s a good way to attract a good crowd. cheering sounded good at our first game, but it certainly did slack off at the second. No one would even yell when the cheerleaders tried to lead Well, something strange has hap pened to the spirit of L.H.S. The them. It doesn’t show much respect for the team or for the school. Also the little pep we have at the pep meet ings show a lack of courtesy to the cheerleaders. The way some people yell out of turn is just one cheap way of attracting attention. Also everyone be sure to read our Open Forum on page 9. If you ever have any. suggest ions, let us know. Write a letter tc the “Open Forum”. Rev. Atkinson Speaks At School Opening i Lexington High School opened on Thursday morning, September 5, with Rev. C. B. Atkinson of the Erlanger Baptist Church as the speaker. He chose for his subject, “Life’s Goal posts’’, with James 1:22 as a text: “Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only”. Good health, great work, deep thought, better feeling and glorious faith were the goals he discussed. The Biblical character of Daniel was given as an example of good health. While Paul was the example of great work. The goal post of better feeling united with deep thought could easily cure the present crime wave and the unsettled race relations, and also put an end to war for all time. Glorious faith was Mr. Atkinson’s closing top ic, using General McArthur’s im mortal words, “I shall return”, as the basis for these remarks.
