EDITCRI4U Why Pacifists? —Paul Williams We have just completed the second great war in which the United States was the dominant power in spelling defeat for those aggressive nations which would seek to conquer the world. Each time we have asked for no territorial gains or payment. Despite these facts, at the present time, our government is meekly trying to satisfy and appease any demands made by any other of the victorious nations. Even Prance, which was conquered by the Axis powers in the early stages of the war and which was freed only through our efforts, is making numerous selfish demands; and, what is more, she is getting them. All this is absurd. The United States is the strongest power in the world today and is in a position to stand up for what she wants. However, this may not be true always, and now is the time that we must stand up for our desires against those of Russia and the other nations. Several good peace plans have been devised by us which co-?rain nothing that Russia or any other country should object to, while nearly all of the demands made by Russia have been purely egotistical and selfish. It is time for our government to “lay its cards on the table’’ and make Russia back down or be sorry for not having done so. Our leaders must stop being pacifists and start being men of fortitude, stability, and fearlessness. Movie Chatter —Adele Tuttle Happy November! And if you’re not happy you will be after you look at the pictures that are coming to the Auditorium Theatre. They are all really Grade A in entertainment. Coming on November 11 and 12 is “My Darling Clementine” from Twen tieth Century Fox. This is an old-fashioned “hoss” opera, starring Heimy Fonda, Linda Darnell, and Victor Mature. Fonda plays Wyatt Earp, marshal of Tombstone, and has the lead in this story of how the frontier town was brought under law and order by the Earp brothers. Mature plays “Doc’’ Holliday, a gambler, and Linda Darnell has the feminine lead in this picture. Based on a book by Stuart Lake, “Clementine” was directed by John Ford, who was won three Oscars for his directing. “Margie” is coming. Yep, that cute little flapper of the ’20’s is coming Thursday (Thanksgiving) and Friday, the 28 and 29. This cute technicolor musical is brought to the screen by Twentieth Century Pox. In it are Jeanne Crain, Glenn Langan and Lynn Bari. See this; it’s really grand. Other good movies coming this month are: “Black Beauty,” “The Spiral Staircase,” “Canyon Passage,” “If I’m Lucky,” “Thrill of Brazil,” “Make Mine Music” and “Night and’ Day.” Mr» amd Miss L, H. SUE HOOPER AND TINKER ’WILLIAMS Crisp weather, sunny days, falling leaves (to rake), and beautififi color describe this lovely fall season and for Mr. and Miss L. H. S. this month who could be a better choice than Sue Hooper and “Tinker” Williams, pictured above? But let’s stop this idle chatter and get down to the facts of this parable. Sue Hooper is our Miss L. H. S. for this month. Sue is very attractive with dark brown hair, big brown eyes, and a very pretty mouth. She likes dill pickles, raisin pie, LEXHIPEP, gray Dodges, horses, cute people, formal dances, potato chips (every time you see Sue, she has a bag of potato chips), “Blues” songs, Revelon lipstick (how about it. Bill?) and sloppy sweaters. She has only two dislikes. They are onions and social climbers. Sue’s college preference is William and Mary. Your selection is tops in our opinion. Sue. “Begin the Beguine” is her favorite song. We surely would like to hear you sing it for us sometime. Sue, for we love to hear your dear, sweet voice on any occasion. When we asked Sue what her favorite pastime was, she replied, “Bill”. What more could we ask?!?! Sue is kept busy with other things besides Bill, for she’s in the Tri-Hi-Y, Quill and Scroll, Beta Club, Etiquette Club, Cotillion Club, LEXHIPEP, and she is a mighty good-looking majorette!! Her ambition will have something to do with art, she said. Whatever field of art you choose, we know you’ll succeed, because you have so much talent. Loads of luck to you. Sue, from all of us!! Paul Williams, better known as “Tinker’’, is our Mr. L. H. S. this month. It W’as very difficult to get an interview with “Tinker,” so you can see he’s a very busy boy. He is very handsome, also. He’s about six feet tall, has brown hair and blue eyes and there is no limit to his brains; if you ever get stuck on anything just call on “Tinker”. He likes football (and is one of our very best players), Hi-Y, LEXICON, a good argument (he’s really good at that), L. H. S. (don’t we all), hunting and fishing. He also likes assembly programs, and eating and sleeping (he does plenty of both). He dislikes silly people, conceited people, and 3:30 classes; a very good selection. “Tinker’s” college preference is undecided, but you can certainly count on his going to one of the best. “Star Dust” tops his list of songs, but confidentially we thmk he’s very fond of “Rhapsody in Blue”. If you ever want to find “Tinker” after dark just go by the Green Door and most likely, he’ll be there “shooting the bull” ’cause that’s his favorite pastime along with sports. It seems almost useless to name “Tinker’s” activities, for they are just about all we have in school. He holds the position of treasurer of Hi-Y, past president of Honor Society, president of Quill and Scroll, editor of the LEXICON, and vice-president of the Senior Class. You know it takes two good co-captains for a good football team, and “Tinker” is one of our co-captains. Basketball comes next, and he’s also tops on the tennis team. We think that just about sums up Paul Williams. You can probably guess what his ambition is by what we have told you. Well, it’s none other than to be President of the United States, and if any one can do it, he can. We are very fortunate in having two sweet students like Sue and “Tinker” in Lexington High. It takes students like they are to make L. H. S. the best school in the world.
