Christmas Shopping
As you more than likely have real
ized, it's time to do your Christmas
shopping. So taking along M.E.G., 1
decided to go window shopping. And
did I "See any upperclassmen window
shopping or otherwise? JNo, I didn’t!
All the underclassmen ibtn and 9th
graders) were doing their shopping
uiough! Here is a typical afternoon
you might spend if you went shopping
111 a«xington and here are the people
you might see.
uoing into Mcl/Sllan’s you would
see Mary Alice Wiison, ninth grader,
WHO IS ' jusc lookin’ around.” liooking
with “Noodle’ would oe Marlene
Peeier mi., t-eggy McCulloch (those
three certainly do have lun together).
Dodging the Main Street traffic, you
would go into Macks’ five and dime
and speak to Carrie Mae Meacham
and Baroara Young. Now there are
two really cute kldS. (Their pal, Betsy
Myers, is cute, too.) Betsy would oe
over at the candy counter drooUng.
Hurrying from Mack’s, you would
run up to Belk’s to see what was next.
Downstairs you’d see “Boocsie” Kim-
brell, “LibDy” Allen, Maxine Russell
and Betty Whitt, who were on then
way upstairs. Looking over into the
men’s department you’d see Rost
Ritchie and Jimmy Hurdle who were
being shown some plaid shirts. In
me ladies’ department upstairs I bet
you wouiu see Caroiyn Koontz, Joan
iaiacKweiuer, Becsy ir-otts and Peggy
d/Ostner signing over many lovely fem-
muie uo-uaos. uviy, how those girlt
love to sigh!) If you scamper back
to tne other side of the street to dear
Ola Purcell's, you might be able tc
see doanie Green, Kitty Philpott, ana
Co. at the perfume counter. Yes
tiiey will be mere smelling away.
'ioddiing out of Purcells to theii
next door neighbor friends. Picket,
and Green s, you will spy Gilbert
■)£ arorougn and good looking Steven
Woods. Tnese two ninth graders are
really good friends, aren’t they? ’Vice
too. Hitting on to the street again
to People s Drug, you’d probably be
nailed by Roxanne Disher (sne’s a
character!! and Shirley Anne Dreyer,
who just had to have some refresh
ments before she could go shopping.
If. you take a peep over towards Pen-
ry’s you might see Mary Dean Hed-
ricK, Peggy Poster, or any of the other
super-duper ninth grade girls wht
are eyeing the nice numbers on dis
play there, since it is getting kinda
late, you would only have time for a
quick look around Fred Thompson’i
tt> see wno was counter shopping. Well,
guess who would be there? None
other than Buddy Crowell and Herbert
Sink, Johnny Griffith, Donald Hege
and Nick Kearns.
Peace On Earth,
Good Will Among Men
—Paul Williams
Peace on earth and good will among
men was the angels’ message at
Christ’s birth. That, too, is the mean
ing of Christmas for us; however, we
have not learned that truth very well
as yet.
This Christmastime we are far from
peace and good will. Many lights are
still out over the world, cruelty and
heartlessness are still in evidence, and
hatred is still in command. TYuly,
men have not heeded the tidings of
great joy that Christmas brings.
We have tried many methods to
brihg peace among men. All our pacts,
agreements, and treaties have failed
because we always held something
back—we were never quite willing to
let it all cost us very much. We are
learning the hard way that the cost
of war is infinitely beyond any price
of peace and good will. We realize
now that unless there comes to pass
that age-old promise of peace and
good will, we cannot even continue to
exist. Our Christmas this year re
peats the fact that God must have a
part in any peace effort.
It is true that there Is little on
the horizon today to give us any hope
of lasting peace and good will; how
ever, if ever the world was clothed in
darkness, it was when out of that
blackness a star appeared, and a host
of angels chorused the promise of
peace.
