Page 6 THE LEXHIPEP February 28, 1947 ON THE HARDWOOD Editors~Bill Hedrick and Hubert Olive Jackets Give Children’s Home Quintet First Defeat of Year The t«xington Hi Yellow Jackets gave the Children’s Home boys their first defeat of the season by a score of 39-33, which took the Orphans ou1 of the undefeated conference stand ings. This game, which will have much effect on the Conference Cham pions, was played on the local court Tuesday night, February 4. The Lexington girls were defeated by the Methodists by a score of 32 to 11. Williamson, who took scoring honors in the previous tilt on the Orphans’ court, took scoring honori with 13 points. Jean Gregg was high scorer for Lexington. The Lexington boys took the lead In the first quarter and kept it through the entire game. Harold Carter took scoring honor for the Jackets with 8 points while Johnson, Williams, Bob Peeler, and Pete Clark got 7 points each. Children’s Home Takes Doubleheader From Yellow Jackets Both of the Lexington basketbal.' teams journeyed to Children’s Home court to meet two hard defeats on Friday night, January 24, the girls being defeated by a score of 16-40 while the boys lost by a closer mar gin of 18-26. The Lexington girls were led by Peggy Simmerson, who racked up I points, while Williamson led the Orphans to a victory with 17 points. The boys’ game ^lowed more en thusiasm with the score being tied 10-10 at the half and again at the third period with the score at 14-14. The Methodists, led by Poole, racked up 12 points in the final quarter to defeat the locals 18 to 26. Carter and Burkhart led the Jackets. Lexington Boys Retain Second Place As They Down Mooresville 52-41 Lexington boys made up for an early season defeat to Mooresville by downing them by the score of 53-41 at the local gym Friday, February 21. The girls were less fortunate and lost to Mooresville for the second time this year, 27-23. Lexington retained her position in the South Piedmont Conference as the boys carried out their determina tion to beat Mooresville. They are now tied for second place in the confer ence. Mooresville had a fine team but was unable to match the fast scoring Yellow Jackets. The Mooresville girls took an early lead in the first quarter and were able to hold this lead well into the second half. In the closing minutes of the game the Yellow Jackets seemed to find the basket and tied up the game. They were unable to keep the game tied for long, however, and Mooresville went ahead to win 27-37. Compliments of W. G. PENRY CO. Students and Teachers Always Welcome PHONE 2241 Lexington Wins Two From Spencer The Lexington boys and girls suc ceeded in winning both games for the second time this season when the Yellow Jaqjkets played Spencer on February 12. It was the boys’ sixth conference win with the decisive score of 36-35. The girls made a comeback after the half and won by the score of 31-26. The male Jackets were able to stay slightly ahead of the Spencer boys all the way with the score 19-15 at the half. After the half Lexington was able to increase the margin tc 36-25 at the end of the game. Carter L.H.S. forward, was high scorer with 10 points, and Johnson, the other for ward, was close behind with 9. The lady Jackets broke their losing streak by defeating Spencer, who was ahead at the half, 23-25, but Lexing ton rallied in the second half and outscored Spencer to win 31-26. Sim merson was high scorer for Lexington with 15; and Everhart, a new for ward, had 13 points to her credit. Boys Take One, Girls Drop One at Concord The Yellow Jackets took to the field Tuesday, February 18, to split two games at Concord. The boys won 39-33, and the girls lost 44-36. The Lexington girls were slow start ing and gathered 19 points to Con cord’s 36 in the first half, but came back during the third and fourth periods to outscore Concord. Although Lexington did well in the second half she failed to score enough points tc win as Concord triumphed 44-36. In the first half of the boys’ game Concord set the pace and was leading at the half 15-11. Lexington came back in the third and fourth periods with renewed strength and surged ahead to win 39-33. The boys received their third conference defeat of the season at the hands of the Bulldogs 50-37 while the girls won in an over-time period 23-22. The girls’ game was close all the way and ended in a deadlock 22-22. In an extra three-minute period Betty Jo Everhart sunk a foul shot which clinched the game 23-22 for the Lady Jackets. The Thomasville boys had a smooth working team and managed to stay ahead most of the game. The Yellow Jackets played a hard game but were outscored by the Bulldogs 50-37. Male Yellow Jackets Nose Out Asheboro Girls Lose By One Point Both Lexington High Basketball teams traveled to Asheboro Friday night, February 7, to defeat the boys by a large margin of 44 to 24, while the girls were defeated by the hosts by a close margin of 27-26. The Ashe boro girls kept the lead in their game while the Lexington boys kept the lead in the boys’ game. Harold Carter was high scorer fre the Jackets by racking up 16 points while Bob Peeler came in second with 6 points. Michael and Funderburke had 7 each for the Comets. Peggy Simmerson took scoring hon ors for the femalfe Jackets with 11 points, and Betty Jo Everhart scored 8. Lovette, Asheboro forward, led the Comets’ attack with 17 points. Thomasville had a 22 to 4 lead in the first half, but the Jackets came back to win a close victory. The Lexington girls lost the lead in the second half and were defeated by a score of 22 to 18. Pritchett took scoring honors for the Tommies with 16 points, while Gregg led the locals with 10. Jackets Defeat Mills Home Quintet Female Jackets Lose To Stronger Girls The Lexington Hi basketeers jour neyed to Mills Home January 31, to split a doubleheder in the South Pied mont Conference. The male Jackets upset the Baptists by a score of 37 to 1'7, while the female Jackets lost, 28-21. The local girls took the lead in the early part of the game, but later in the half, the Orphans, led by Walsli, took over the ball and kept the lead. Betty Jo Everhart led the locals by scoring 10 points. Bill Johnson racking up 11 points, started the Lexington lead, and the Baptists were not able to outscore the Jackets.
