MOVIE CHATTER
—Adele Tuttle
“Undercurrent” flowed among the “Three Wise Fools" on “King’s Row”
while “Deception” caused “The Killers” to begin “The Chase” to “California”
after seeing “Humoresque.” No, this isn’t the begiiming of a mystery story,
but it’s Movie Chatter.
“Undercurrent,” M.G.M.’s newest thriller, is playing at the Auditorium
Theatre Monday and Tuesday, March 3 and 4. Bringing back Robert Taylor
in his first screen appearance since his release from the Navy, “Undercurrent"
also brings back Kathryn Hepburn to the public. Besides these two flne
stars, Robert Mitchum also helps make this one of the most surprising
pictures ever Aimed. This is definitely a picture that should be seen from
the begiiming to understand it. Miss Hepburn plays a terrified bride who
marries a man with a Jekyll-Hyde personality (Taylor). Mitchum plays
Robert Taylor’s brother; Edmund Gwenn is Miss Hepburn’s father, and
Marjorie Main is a sharp-tongued housekeeper. It’s really a very different
picture!
Cute and charming little Margaret O’Brien returns to the screen Wednes
day, March 5, in “Three Wise Fools,” who are ably played by Lionel Barry
more, Edward Arnold, and Lewis Stone. Margaret plays a little Irish girl
who believes in fairies, and she tries to convince the wise fools that there
really are fairies. Thomas Mitchell and Cyd Chraisse are also cast In this
ehart-waiming story from M.G.M.
A Warner Brothers’ re-release is playing Thursday and Friday, March
6 and 7. If you ever once saw “King’s Row” you won’t forget it! Ann
Sheridan, Ronald Regan, Robert Cummings, and Betty Fields give their
roles are Claude Rains, Karen Morley, Douglas Craft, and Charles Cobum.
This picture is based on a novel by Henry Bellaman, and it tells of the lives
of four people in a small town. Cummings plays a doctor who loves the
ill-fated Betty Fields. Regan plays a gay young man on which tragedy falls,
and Miss Sheridan plays a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. You can
spend an evening of good entertainment by seeing “King’s Row.”
“Humoresque” is playing Monday and Tuesday, March 10 and 11. It
stars Joan Crawford, John Garfield, and Oscar Levant. It is produced by
Warner Brothers.
“P^'=®Ption”, the new Bette Davis movie, is playing Thursday and Friday,
March 13 and 14. The other stars in this Warner Brothers’ picture are Paul
Henreid and Claude Rains. This is definitely a woman’s picture, and you
may not be the woman who will like it. Miss Davis plays a pianist who
deceives her husband (Henreid) by telling him lies about her relationship
with Rains. Mr. Menreid is given little opportunity to display his acting
talent, while Mr. Rains really gets his share. In fact, if it were not for Mr.
Rains’ and Miss Davis’ acting, this over-dramatized tale could not exist.
All the glory of sunny California will be seen in Paramoimt’s big pro
duction of “California.” It stars academy award winner Ray Milland beau
tiful Barbara Stanwyck, and versatile Barry Fitzgerald. Milland plays a
deserted army man who teams up with Barry, who is on his way to California
to grow grapes. On the way Barry picks up Barbara, a dance hall queen
who has been run out of town. From then on things start happening but
quick. You will enjoy this lusty tale about old California. Others In’ the
cast are George Coulouris and Albert Dekker.
“The Chase is back.” Yes, this time Wednesday, March 19 you will
finally get to see that guy with the mean looking eyes, Steve Cochrane, and
murderous Peter Lorre. The picture is about an amnesia victim (Robert
Cummings) who runs off with his benefactor’s wife (Michele Morgan). ’This
psychological drama has the usual dream sequence which gets you so mixed
up you think that you’re seeing a double feature. So see it if you want a
hair-raising good time. United Artists chased it out for the movie-going
public. °
Undoubtedly you have heard about Universal’s new picture, “The Killers
and its star, Burt Lancaster. If you haven’t, then you must see it either
Monday or Tuesday, March 24 and 25. Built around the famous short story
by Ernest Hemingway, this is one of the best films of the year. It is a story
about murder, hate, human greed, love, ruthlessness, and sorrow. The girl
opposite Lancaster is a Carolina lass, Ava Gardner. Besides Miss Gardner
there is Edmond O’Brien, Albert Dekker, and Sam Levine, who all turn in
superb performances. Yet this picture is really Burt Lancaster’s monopoly,
who does a brilliant job as the pug fighter who turns into a murderer.
And that’s Movie Chatter for March!
