December 19, 1947 THE LEXHIPEP Page 9 —Doug Graver The ’47 football season has passed, so I cornered the two shy men who made tnis season possible, and got the following info from the men who should know!!!—the coaches. According to Maus: “This is one of the finest teams I have coached, along with the team of ’43, but I don’t think that either of them rate with the team of 1940. Neither do I think that the much publicized team from Fayetteville, which is rated as the best team in the state, is as good as they were, either. I do think that we had a fine season with the exception of the Childrn’s Home game; how ever, I think we had the better team man for man.” The All-Conference team has once more been picked; it is as follows: Ends—Clark, Lexington; Pittman, Thomasville (tie); Chambers, Kaimapolls. Guards—Alexander, Mooresville; Cooke, Concord. Tackles—Walser, Lexington; King, Children’s Home. Backs—Gantt, Albemarle; Kluttz, Concord; Crews, Children’s Home; Rous seau, North Wilkesboro; Clark, Barium Springs; Eanes, Lexington (tie). These are the boys that the coaches picked as the best in the conference, but I choose to differ with the “experts” on some choices for they tried to get in many towns and not let one town have a monopoly. We are boimd by no such restrictions, so the Lexhipep All-Conference reads as follows: Ends—Clark, Lexington; Taylor, Lexington. Tackles—Walser, Lexington; King, Children’s Home; Blalock, Lexington (tie). Guards—Price, Lexington; Cooke, Concord, Newell, Lexington (tie). Center—Everhart. Backs—Cook, Lexington; Eanes, Lexington; Gibson, Lexington; Gantt, Albemarle. The differences in the two teams picked are quite noticeable. Most of the backs picked are passers, and the elements of running and blocking are overlooked. On hardly any team picked is the blocking back really a blocking back. So these boys are overlooked, and backs who are fine runners are overshadowed by passers. This being an unprejudiced newspaper, only eight Lexington boys were unanimously selected out of the eleven! Football has passed and basketball is here, so let’s follow the team and give them the backing that they deserve—plenty. Late report from High Point: two of the best linemen in training for the Optimist Bowl game are Sam Everhart and Bill Blalock. Blalock is an excel lent linesman, and was chosen co-captain of the Western team. Everhart is one of the best linebackers the coaches have seen this year.
