January 30, 1948 THE LEXHIPEP Page 7 —Doug Graver The ’48 basketball season in under way and the male Yellow-jackets are battling for the top slot in the conference and the future looks bright, so take a look at the boys who make this position possible. Harold Carter—a fins forward back from last year, whose floor work and scoring ability make him one of the teams outstanding players. Jimmy Grayson—Jimmy G. is new to us this year, but we are mighty glad to have him. Jim is an outstanding ball handler and a top scorer. Benny Walser—“Clem” is the teams top scorer so far this year and con trols the back board most of the time plus being a fine ball handler. Pete Clark—Pete plays a guard but he usually puts in enough set shots to rats high in the scoring column. Charles Price—“Peahead” is having bad luck with the bucket this year but we feel that he will be “on” later. “Chazz” is also a fine ball handler. J. L. Peeler—“Dub” is one of the leading reserves this year and will be counted on this year and next to get those important “buckets.” “Chub” Koontz—Another fine reserve this year who helps quite a lot, “Chub” is a new man on ths team this year. “Tubba” Craver—“Tubba” is another new man who will be counted on this year and next to deliver his right and left-handed hook shots. Marvin Crow—“Bird” plays quite a lot as a reserve this year. He is only a tenth graded this year and should be a fine guard before he graduates. So far the girls have not won a game, but they seem to be improving all along. Miss Philbeck’s cagers consist of Beck and Harbinson, co-captains, plus Richey, Bruton, Carpenter, Sink, Kenney, Snellings, McCullock and Russel. Credit where credit is due; Lewis “Dog” Hartzog. Most of you may not realize it but a great deal of the burden of getting the team in shape and teaching of plays has fallen on his shoulders. Thanks a lot “Dog.” Whether you know it or not the game tonite may mean whether Lex ington takes the South Piedmont Basketball conference title or not. Your backing means their success.
