SERIOUS THOUGHT
“Be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”—Psalms 100:4.
“I learn as the years roll onward,
And leave the past behind.
That much I had counted sorrow
But proves that my Lord was kind.
That many a’ flower I longed for
Had a hidden thorn of pain,
.And many a rugged by-path
Led to fields of golden grain.”

COMPARISON PROVES THE POINT
—By Martha Hooper
When, or if, we stop to compare the lives of the fortunate Americans
with those of the Europeans, we immediately realize all the good and won
derful things that are ours to enjoy. During the war, we, as high school
students, had no conception of the hardships the Europeans endured. And
now that the war is over, we still know little of the heartaches they are
suffering.
How many of us would be willing to change places with our less for
tunate neighbors? Not any would consent to that. Yet, how many of us
give thanks to God, and are truly thankful for what we have? Sunday
worshiping is not enough. We should be thankful every day and show it
by offering daily prayers and doing Christ-like deeds.
Sometimes we find people who are always wishing they could be in
someone else’s place. These people don’t realize that they couldn’t be
happy even then, although they may be given everything of material value.
Unless a person is Christian and is sincerely thankful for all their possessions,
he is not truly happy. Usually the people we think are so happy and who
have everything anyone could possibly want are not the happy and con
tented people they appear to be. If we would take more time to be thankful
for what we have instead of finding fault with our own walks of life, we
would be much happier.

JANE STRELIT.Z AND HAL CROTTS
Contrary to tradition and custom, Mr. and Miss L. H. S. are spending
Thanksgiving in school. When asked where they would like to spend Thanks
giving, they replied that they would like to be at a football game. In order
to please them the photographers and cartoonists got together to give them
their hearts’ desire as nearly as possible.
This isn’t Jane’s usual place at a game for she serves us as a very
capable cheerleader. This is also a different place for Hal, because he was
one of our reserve ends before he received a leg injury.
Yes, Jane is the pore lil ole editor of the LEXICON. She really deserves
a medal for her patience since everyone pestered her so when the Lexicon
pictures were being made. We are sure Jane, with the help of the staff,
will put out the best LEXICON we’ve ever had.
She enters in nearly all the activities at this school. She is in the
Tri-Hi-Y, Quill and Scroll, Beta Club, and to prove how smart she is, she
is a member of the National Honor Society. As I mentioned before, she
is a Cheerleader and the Editor of the LEXICON. To help explain her
more clearly, Jane walked right off with twb superlatives, most outstanding
and most versatile girl. We think the seniors surely did make a wise.
choice for our Thanksgiving Miss L. H. S. She also was one of the girls
to represent us at Girls’ State.
It would be impossible to mention Jane and not think of chicken salad
sandwiches and Gamecocks (you can guess why). We leave Jane now hum
ming her favorite song, “To Each His Own.”
Our Mr. L. H. S. for this month is that tall, starry-eyed hunk of man,
Hal Crotts. We’re surely sorry he had to go and get himself hurt (of course
it wasn’t all his fault), ’cause—who knows?—he might have been a big
star on the L. H. S. fearless eleven. Nevertheless, he’ll show us what a
valuable centerfielders he is when baseball season rolls around. And to
prove how sincere he is in baseball, he hopes someday to become a profes
sional player (we know he can do it). Hal likes to spend most of his time
eating (he is gaining weight), probably in the company of Barbara, since
she heads his list of likes.
None but the best represent our school, so—of course—Hal was a delegate
to Boys’ State. He is also a faithful member of the Key Club. We hear that
he has a mighty good singing voice. He is a member of the choir at the
Second Reformed Church. Instead of going to his church to hear him sing
(not that it would hurt usV, we should have him sing for us sometime in
assembly (how about it, Hal?). And we leave Hal singing “A Tree in the
Meadow.”
Right here the writer would like to say that, beginning with the Novem
ber Mr. and Miss L. H. S., the senior boy and girl .selected will became the
Junior Rotarian and guest of the B. & P. W. ’This adds to the prominence
and importance of Mr. and Miss L. H. S.
