Jackets Continue
Non-Stop Flight
February 11—The Lexington High
School Yellowjackets continued their
non-stop flight toward the South
Piedmont Conference Championship
at Winston-Salem Friday night. In
cidentally, in revenge over the Chil
dren’s Home Quint who took an ear
ly season contest from them.
The Jackets literally flew to a 14-1
lead at the end of the first quarter,
with Harold Carter at the controls.
The sharpshooting Harold not only
got 16 direct hits, but also gave the
overflowing gymnasium quite an ex
hibition of stunt flying-er ball-han
dling.
All was not smooth sailing, however,
for the “Home” team was not to be
denied. They had a few tricks left,
and just about threw the Jackets into
a tailspin early in the fourth quar
ter. In fact, it looked as if they
were to repeat their previous per
formance; that is, overcoming a huge
lead to win in the final seconds.
In spite of Sheril’s rabbit foot, the
Jackets came through, and the Home
had to be satisfied with a 5 point
defeat.
The “Jackettes,” on the other hand,
lost to the Children’s Home Lassies
whom they had previously beaten in
a home-floor encounter. Candis Car
penter stole the show from the high-
scoring Peggy McCulloch. Miss Car
penter led the Jackettes in their lost
cause with 12 points.
Jackets Win, Jackettes
Lose To Visiting
Barium Teams
The high school Jackets defeated
a visiting Barium team for the sec
ond time this year, as they rolled to
a 46-35 victory here Friday night.
This victory came much easier than
the first, encounter in which they
met this year. The first game they
played ended in a heated overtime
period, with Bob Shytle pulling the
Jackets through for a win.
In the second meeting lanky Bob
did just that again, though not in
an overtime period. This time he
racked up 18 points to lead the Jac
kets in the scoring department. “Tub
by” Graver threw in 10 points to sec
ond Shytle.
’The girls’ game ended with the
Jackettes on the slight end of a 34-20
score. Peggy McCulloch led the lassies
with 10 points.

WEATHER REPORT
There’s something about warm weather that gets ole Joe Fan jumping.
Just let him hear one Robin chirp or see one plant burst into bloom, and a
marked change (very similar to the Jekyll-Hyde episodes) takes place.
No longer is he chilled-but-loyal football fan or the excited-but-civilized
basketball fan. He has suddeny turned into a rabid—but highy American—
basebal fan!
Long ago given up as unexplained by leading psychiatrists, the American
baseball fan is the eighth wonder of the world. Who else would smother his
team with abusive (to say the least) words, and seconds later fiercely attack
some hopeless fan who unwillingly denounces his favorite second sacker?
Once more Junior is oiling up his favorite glove. Pop is quoting the latest
on Dimag’s salary, and Mom (poor soul) has to sit through it all, knowing
that soon she’ll be sitting homes at nights knitting while this mad twosome
strolls out to see the fifth-place Rinky-Dinks take it on the nose again.
Oh, happy day! Spring is here again (almost).
ODDS AND ENDS
Harold Carter, the Jackets’ high-scoring, smooth-ball-handling sensa
tion, rated Greensboro Daily News attention when he was selected the school
boy performer to be featured in A1 Thorny’s “Meet the Prep” several weeks
ago. Harold is currently playing like a house afire and should be seriously
considered lor an All-State birth. • * • If the Yellowjackets don’t fall to
“Old Man Upset” before February 25, there is definitely going to be a
photo finish in the S. P. Conference. The T’ville-Lexlngton encounter, the
final conference game of the season, will decide the championship. * * •
Pass the smelling salts, George. The Hi-Y intramural basketball tournament
is really packing ’em in. • • • It’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
Listed below are the scoring statistics as computed thus far this year.
This list includes both conference and non-conference engagements.

Carter Capers To Cop
Game From Concord
Girls Lose
Harold Carter showed up to his true
self as he copped 23 points against
Concord in a decisive battle at Con
cord Tuesday, February 8. The local
laddies defeated the Concord Spi
ders 45-31.
The victory put the L. H. S. “Jack
ets” high in the conference stand
ings.
Concord took an early lead, but
keeping the lead was a different
story. The “Jackets” passed and the
Spiders never repassed. Bob Shytle,
sophomore ace, was runner-up with
11 points.
In the girls’ game Concord just
couldn’t be whipped. The L. H. S.
girls dropped their game by a score
of 42-30. Scott led the winners with
17 points while high scoring Peggy
McCulloch sank 14 for the locals.
