Serious Thoughts
And I will make them and the places round about my hill a
blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season;
there shall be showers of Ezekiel 34:26
For, lo, th^w^er is past, >
^e rain is overhand gone;
The flowers appear &.■?■ the earth;
The time of the singing of birds is come.
And the voice of the turtle -is heard in our land.

“MEN MAY COME AND MEN MAY GO”
At the close of every school year, when graduation rolls around and dis
perses our dignified seniors, students and teachers alike wonder who can
possibly take their places. It may be a president, honor roll student or an
outstanding football player, but no matter which, there is always the same
impending anxiety. Although we await with dubiousness, we cannot be wrong
if we say that there always has been and there always will be someone
capable of fulfilling their predecessors’ places.
A very good example of this fact is that the LEXHIPEP Staff for next
year stepped right in and with very little previous experience put out this
issue of the LEXHIPEP Just to prove to ourselves that we CAN carry on,
and to give you a sample of what you may expect next year.
Maybe we are too proud of the staff to see their faults concerning their
work on the paper, but we do hope that this issue meets with your approval
and confirms our theory.
OUR NO. 1 NEED ALMOST A REALITY
The number one need in Lexington is a place for its youth and no one
knows it better than we ourselves; however, do we know just what is being
done for us in Lexington’s new Y. M. C. A.? Many of us have the opinion
that it will hold little or nothing for the young people, but that is where
we are wrong. On the contrary, many of its activities will be centered around
us. The “Y”wlll be open to students after school for dancing, eating, playing
games, and just hanging around. A juke-box or record player will provide
music, and the big front porch as well as the large front room can be used
for dancing. There will be snack machines which will provide candy, drinks,
crackers, chewing gum, and almost everything to eat. Of course, there is a
big kitchen for preparing regular meals such as those for the Key Club.
Other clubs in the high school will also have a place in the “Y”. There will

This month, our Mr. and Miss L.H.S. are Nancy Thomason and Bobby
Leonard (respectively, of course!)
Nancy is one of the sweetest girls in the Senior Class (this year), in,'
this writer’s opinion. Evidently, her classmates think she’s swell, too, ’cause
she’s in the Tri-Hi-Y, Quill and Scroll, LEXHIPEP, and she was voted the
Most Talented and Most Versatile Girl in the Senior Class. Besides this,
everybody knows she sings like a lark!
Incidentally, the song she likes best is Bipiddie Bopiddie Boo. She likes
nut sundaes, English under Mrs. Hedrick, and almost everything else. There
are very few thing she doesn’t like, just unffiendly people and rice.
The university Nancy likes best is Duke. Her ambition is to have many
friends. Clhis ambition is evidently already reached.) Besides singing, her
favorte pastime is going to practice plays for Lena at the Methodist Church.
Her favorite sport is baseball. (Spectator?) Her ideal date is someone she
can have fun with, someone who’s not too serious and not too silly. Some
day she plans to be a housewife!
Bobby must be pretty popular, too, ’cause he’s in the Senior Class Play,
the Hi-Y, and Junior Rotarian, and he’s one of our capable football managers.
Of course, at the top of his list of likes is Janice (natur’lly); then comes
food, especially—well, most anything dible! Sports, all kinds; a girU???),
good(???) music. Miss Manning, and Miss Matthews’ study hall (we wonder
why). Among the things he isn’t fond of, come “Mule Train,’’ spinach, but
termilk, and Geometry.
Bobby’s college preference is either Wake Forest or Catawba, and his
ambition is to be a great pediatrician.
He plans just to loaf this summer.
Here are a list of his favorites: Song—“There’s No Tomorrow.” Sport—
basketball; instruments—harp and ugelele; type of date—sweet, gentle, and
loving (can Bobby be holding out on us? Ha! Ha!); pastimes—sports, dating
THAT girl and playing the uke.
Well, “Parting is such sweet sorrow,” but Fifth Period History beckons,
so by, by, Mr. and Miss L.H.S., students, and faculty.
be rooms where the Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, Honor Society, or any other clubs can
hold their regular meetings.
Two or three nights a week the “Y” will be reserved for the young peo
ple alone, and L. H. S. will be able to have dances there after |he football
games next year.
Of course, all of this will be in the part of the “Y” which is in the old
McKay house. We have yet to mention the new building that is to be built
behind the McKay house. It will be a gym patterned somewhat after the
one at the University of North Carolina. It will have a seating capacity of
about 4000 people in the gym part upstairs, and downstairs there will be eight
pool tables, ten bowling alleys, and large dressing rooms. What is even more
wonderful is the date that the “Y” is expected to be opened to the public.
The part in the McKay house will have its opening on May 1 and the gym is
expected to be finished by the first of next year. The teen-agers of Lexing
ton are ail waiting with great anticipation for the completion of the new
“Y” because it will truly be a dream realized.
