At 7:30 T oiiiglit The Lexhipep Over Prizes We’ll Fight! XXVIII LEXIXGTOA^, X, C., MAIICTI 2, 1951 Xo. 5 Semester Assemblies Off To Good Start Eighth Grade Presents Outstanding Talent Show The student body of L. H. S. looks forward to the eightht grade talent show perhaps more than any other assembly program during the year. The program, under the direction this year of Mrs. A. B. Hardee, was one of the best programs the eighth grade has ever presented. Since the eighth grade has so much varied talent, it makes us upper-classmen very proud of them. After the devotion, which was led by Angella Foster, the talent show got under way. First the eighth grade Glee Club sang three lovely songs with Miss Doris Mably doing a solo to “My Heart Stood Still.” An imper sonation of Daisy Duck was given by Miss Jeanette Carlton. Others on the program were: Miss Ray Sechrist, soloist; Miss “Snookie” Money, piano; Miss Jimmie Etta Redwine, poem; Miss Jane Cook, piano; Miss Romona Leonard, piano; Mr. Fred Pope, solo ist; Miss Janette Shoaf, poem; Misses Patsy Foust and Betty Sue Everhart, duette; Miss Betty Brown, piano; Miss Margarette Anne Ford, soloist, and last but far from least. Miss “Tillie” Beck and Mr. Fddie Catbell all dressed up to do the Charleston, and they really did!!! Mr. Robert Fitz gerald did a grand job as master of ceremonies. The winners were: First prize—Jeanette Carlton; Second— Glee Club; and honorable mention went to the Charleston kids, “Tillie” and Eddie. The greatest attraction on the tal ent show was not an eighth grader, but none other than Rubinoff, the world famous violinist! His beautiful selections held the audience spell bound for a half hour of sheer en joyment, and many of the student body attended his matinee and night performances. "Stunt Night" Tonight Tonight at 7:30 in the high school auditorium the Lexicon staff will have their annual “Stunt Night”. This program, which is one of the high lights of the school year, is always looked forward to with much antici pation because it offers a good eve ning of frolic and fun. Many original stunts have been submitted, and there are many pries awaiting those that are judged best. Admission will be fifteen cents for grammar school children and twenty-fve cents for high .school students. Be sure to be on hand tonight at 7:30 for two hours of fun. Chances are you have seen them running around the halls and you’ve wondered who they are. Now is your opportunity, folks, to get better acquainted with the fu ture Juniors and Seniors of Lexing ton High School, for we want you to “know them”. “Tillie” Beck, that lil’ eighth grader who’s got everyone talking about how cute she is, went to Robbins and from that she told me, she was rather leary about coming to L. H. S., ’cause she had heard some WILD tales about how hard it was, and no fun at all!! Now that she’s here, though, she thinks it’s wonderful and just couldn’t be any better. The thing she likes best is meeting new friends, seeing old ones, and just being with every one!! (From what we hear she has plenty of friends to keep her busy.) She would like a few changes made, such as no homework, no exams, (what bliss!), and more talking in school. “Tillie” loves football (she’s one of our most loyal fans), and plans to go out for basketball. She would also like to be on a staff, and keep the school spirit peppy by lieing a cheerleader. What ambition this gal has!! Not only does she want to have lots of fun, but she also wants to make straight A’s while in L. H. S. It’s a guess that she’ll do all these things and many more too, ’cause on top of those cute dimples and looks. Lexhjpcp Relaxing At J. O. U. A. M. Reverend McAlpine Impresses Students Assembly was held on Thursday morning, February 15, with Carlton Everhart presiding, and Gordon Swaim leading the devotions. The guest speaker, the Reverend Jack R. McAlpine, pastor of the First Presby terian Church, was introduced by Tommy Snyder. Mr. McAlpine gave an interesting address on “America In the Day of Trial”. Three ques tions were brought out which he an swered for the benefit of the stu dents. These were: First, “Why does God not stop the war?” Second, “On whose side is God?” Third, “If God judges men not by their nations or their flags, what are the requirements of God for us?” The students were greatly impressed with the Reverend McAlpine’s most inspiring talk. Hi-Y Brings Out Hidden Talent The Hi-Y presented a very enjoy able program at assembly Thursday, February 23, in the form of a quiz show, conducted as a truth or conse quences show. Carlton Everhart acted as quiz master with “Cootie” White as his able assistant. Many contest ants appeared on the program, among them being: Nick Kearns, playing boogie-woogie numbers, Charles Swicegood, playing the guitar, with Bruce Mize singing “Tennessee “Waltz”; Miss Jones rendering a solo in Latin; and Mr. Clark, giving a lecture on “Hen-Pecked Husbands.” Others taking parts were: Miss Sugg, Miss Hill, Joan Kearns, John Sink, Don Hege, “Radar” Kearns, Don Haynes, and Carroll McDade. The feature of the program was Don Purdee’s proposal to Miss Brooks. she’s just bubbling over with a dar ling personality! Whom have we here?? Eddie Ca- thell, the new arrival from Grimes that all the girls are buzzing about, says that the only word he knows that describes high school is “won derful!” He says that he’s glad to be here, but high school has more sys tem than Grimes and too much work! (Take note, teachers!) Eddie thinks that sports and the LEXHIPEP (smart boy) are the best things about L.H.S., but there are a few. changes he would like to make, too. He would like to have more dances (who wouldn’t?), a swimming pool complete with swim ming classes, and regular study pe riods for the eighth grades. He is out for football (right end), and his ambition is to make first string while in high school and to get a scholarship to Georgia Tech. Besides his football ambitions, he would like to make first string basketball and be on a staff. You’re mighty cute, Eddie, and we know you’re going to make a big hit in L. H. S. Now we come to the other cute girl in the picture. She is Barbara La nier, and she comes to L. H. S. from Reeds and Cecil Schools. She says that high school is different from Cecil in that you study more(??) and you sec more people. She had a real good time at Cecil, but thinks she’ll (continued on Page 2)
