Splits Wins With T-Ville Jackets Even Score With Methodists SPENCER LOSES DUO TO JACKETS When Spencer visited the locals’ court on Friday, January 26, they were in for a drubbing, fhe Jackets tooJc two games from the visitors with comparative ease. Swaim was once again the big gun for the L.H.S. girls, hitting for 33 points; Withers oeing high scorer for Spencer girls witn 26 points. Purdee was high scorer for the local boys with 10 points, and Don narmon topped for spencer with the same amount. The Jackets took the lead early in the ball game and held It throughout. Lexington started out against Speneer with a zone defense wnich proved very effective on the locals’ small court. The game was rather one-sided, with reserves seeing much action toward the last. Boys’ Game Lexington 59 Spencer 21 Both Games Exciting The Lexington girls improved their excellent cpnference record here on Tuesday, February 6, by defeating Children’s Home by the score of 61 to 54. Nona Swaim was the high scorer for the locals with 35 points to her credit; Bruton was next with 18. Horton was leader for the visit- mg team, accounting for 25, while Dowell was right behind her with 23. The boys game was a real thriller toward the last. Children’s Home, who had trailed in the game all the way from the opening minutes, caught fire in the closing minutes to knot the score and then to pull ahead. With only twenty seconds left, Ronnie Crow sank a field goal to tie the score at 44 all with only half a minute left to play. Then with just ten seconds re maining, big Don Pudee sent a free throw through the net to put the Jackets out in front by one point; on the last play of the ball game, Charles Swicegood dropped an addi tional foul shot to give Lexington a 46-44 victory. Girls Edge 40-39 Win i The girls for Lexington High : School defeated Lexington’s greatest ! rival at T-ville on Friday, February I 9, by the very narrow margin of one ; point. The game was neck and neck Lexington’s girls got their s^ond ap tjjg ^^y with the Jackets coming ' out victorious. Swaim sacked 24 to lead the locals in their attack against Thomasville. In the boys’ game in which Lex ington was on the losing end of a 68-54 score, McLendon scored 22 to lead the boys from Thomasville. Many of the Jackets fouled out of the game, and this gave the oppo nents a definite advantage. The score was tied up at the half at 27-27, but in the third and fourth periods Lex ington fell behind. Downs Albemarle Girls Win 54-33; Boys 62-51 big scare in conference play on Tues day, February 20, at Albemarle, when they won by only one point. At half-time Albemarle was leading 36 to 30, but the Jackets rallied late in the ball game to knot the^score on several occasions. Swaim had 23 points to lead the locals; Henrietta Bruton had 21 and a close second for high scoring honors. In the boys’ game Lexington got off to an early start and kept the lead throughout the whole game. Ronnie Crow got 24 points and also showed brilliant work on the floor. Wilkesboro Both teams for Lexington High continued their winning streak here on Friday, February 2, by defeating North Wilkesboro in a pair of con ference games. The boys’ game was close during the first three periods with the visitors tieing the score on several occasions, but in the last quarter the Jackets pulled away to be on the winning end of the final score. Purdee, back in form after favoring an injured ankle for several weeks, was the spark for the locals, ending the game with 22 points. The L.H.S. girls had a breather, defeating their opponents 47 to 19. Swaim hit for 26 points even though she saw limited aetion in the game. The guards for Lexington’s girls did a very commendable job in holding the opposing forwards to very few shots from the floor. Girls’ Game N. LOCALS DIVIDE WITH ASHEBORO Lexington girls took a thrilling one- point victory over Asheboro on Sat urday, February 17, on the beautiful McCrary Eagles court. The game was played on an even basis all the way through, with the score changing hands often. Toward the last things really got exciting, and with only seconds left Emma Bruton dropped a free throw through the net to put Lexington out in front. The boys’ game was a different matter. Asheboro was prepared for the game and their big center, York, accounted for many rebounds as well as points. He ended the game with 21 to his credit. Lexington Yellow Jackets Grab Two From Spencer The Lexington High Yellow Jack ets eased out a seven point win over Spencer High at Spencer on Tuesday night, February 12. The Yellow Jack ets had it tough from the starting whistle to the finish due to a scrappy Spencer 5. The Spencer lads were leading 25-24 at the half, but the Yellow Jackets took over the second half, thanks to the lanky Lexington center, Don Purdee, with his 27 points, and Charlie Swicegood’s 13 points. Charlie Swicegood didn’t start due to an ankle injury, but this did not keep the speedy forward from stripping the cords for his much needed 13 points. The Lexington girls ran wild with a 66-41 win over the Spencer girls. The Lexington clan was paced by Nona Swaim and her 36 points. She was backed by Smith, who had 15 points.
