-4 Page 6 THE LEXHIPEP March 2, 1951 a' TIME GET —Herbert Sink Well, the season for basketball is over, and the time for other sports has come. Baseball, golf, and tennis are now taking the limelight with the weather getting warmer and everyone outdoors more. But let’s talk about baseball. This year Coach Maus is expecting to have a better team than he has had in many years. There is a fine pitching staff on the Jackets’ squad, as well as wonderful support in all other positions. The boys with the clubs are expected to keep Lexington on top again in the golf division. Many of the same boys are back on the links from last year. Dunlop White is still here as the number one man, and Joe Bafford is running close for the second spot. Tennis has been revived once more in L. H. S. and a team is being started again under the sponsorship of the local Key Club. Tennis is one of the finest games for competitive sport and if more interest could be aroused in school this game might become a sport with a regular schedule each year. Girls’ Basketball Much recognition must be given to the girls’ team for the work done by them in this past season. They finished in second spot when the season closed, having lost only two games in regular conference play, both being to Barium Springs, who was on top at the end. Nona Swaim was the top scorer for the Yellow Jackets this year and was very valuable to the team. The guards also played a major part in many of the close games by holding the opposing team almost scoreless at crucial points in the game. Lexington High is very proud of the accomplishments made by the Girls’ Basketball Squad and congratula tions go to each member and to their coach. Miss Erlene Stevenson, for the best season in many a year. Let’s pause just a moment for a little thought about some boys who certainly deserve it. The ones that I mean are the ones that are in the service fighting so that we may stay over here and enjoy the leisure and carefree life that we live now. Not often do we stop to thank them or even think enough about them to drop an occasional card or letter. These boys are carry ing a tremendous burden for us; he least we could do is to let them know that we are behind them and appreciate what they are doing. Don’ you think so??? Jackets Hit Elkin For Double Win In a non-conerence game with Elkin, played at Elkin on Monday, February 26, the Jackets were on top o a 60-41 victory. Big Don Purdee and Don Haynes were top scorers for Lexington with 14 and 10 points respectively. Osborne had 16 for Elkin. Junior Varsity boys from both sehools played in the opener. Big Crowd Witnesses Annual Student-Faculty Basketball Game There was much excitement when the students met the faculty on Fri day, March 10, in the local gym. In the opening game the faculty girls’ team overwhelmed the students by the score of 15 to 6. In the second game the students took the big end of the score to down the faculty 24 to 15. Several things were planned to add to the interest of the game. During the girls’ game one of the teachers fainted and immediately several bot tles of Hadacol were rushed out to her. In the latter part of the boys’ game an argument was started be tween Hayden Hooper and Mr. Clark. Hooper, who was on the students’ team, even though a small boy, man aged to overcome Clark, a big man of about 240 pounds. The fight got pretty rough, so to keep neither one of them from getting seriously hurt. Bob Bowers, a member of the local police force, was forced to handcuff Hooper to the players’ bench. L. H. S.
