PEOPLE t 'RlllJ Question of the Month OUESTIOIM: What is your reaction to the increasing emphasis on environ mental control? ANSWERS JERRY LEE CHAPMAN — Process Operator — CP Area — Resides on Route 64, Lake Toxaway —Married with 2 children —12 years Company Service. “I’m all for it. We have to be careful to keep any harmful process waste from getting into water or the atmos phere. I think our engineers are doing a good job of both equipment design to prevent pollution and monitoring to control it. I believe we’re one of the leaders in this area as far as en vironmental control is concerned.’’ /P-:- WANDA GALLOWAY — Clerk C — Accounting Area — Resides on Whit mire Road, Route 2, Brevard — Mar ried with 1 child — 2 weeks Company Service. (Wanda is our new Telephone Operator and Receptionist. Her hus band Dennis works in the Finishing Area.) “You see so many plants that don t measure up to Du Pont’s way of keep ing the environment clean. This in creased emphasis will help them come up to our standards. As parents, we can do our job to help future genera tions from causing pollution by teach ing our children ways they can prevent it from happening.’’ A'4 /lo ii BOB PUTNAM — Process Laboratorian — Control Lab Area —Resides on the Old Hendersonville Highway, Pisgah Forest — Unmarried — 13-1/2 years Company Service. “It’s about time if it’s not too late . I fly, and talking with pilots with a lot more experience, they say the haze in the air has improved from just the little bit that has been done ... As far as water goes, here in the mountains, we don’t have as much a problem as in the low lands. . . People clear land too hastily. When building, instead of just clearing what they need to build on, they scrape everything away including topsoil. I saw a restaurant builder off 1-26 cut down beautiful trees and clean away a whole area instead of planning to save the large shade trees. This gets under my skin. There should be some restrictions on the amount of natural environment, especially topsoil, a per son can disturb when they build So many people think, ‘Well, what can I do. I’m just one person’. In a way they re right. A whole community needs to get involved. The best am munition an evil has is for all the good people to do nothing. 1 feel this applies to the environmental control problem. JIMMIE SMITH — Solutions Operator — Coating Area — Resides on Hudlin Gap Road, Pisgah Forest — Married with 1 child — 14 years Company Service. “One thing I always think about is the condition the world is going to be in if this keeps up. What stands out most in my mind is people’s health. Pollu- 'tion could be causing viruses unheard of in the medical field. Our health pro blems could be growing as a result. It’s everyone’s job to help cut down on pollution. The problem isn’t going to come close to being solved unless everybody does their part to help pre vent it.’’ JAMES ROGERS — Service Operator — Finishing Area — Resides on Chinv ney Rock Highway, Hendersonville Married with 1 child — 3 years Com pany Service. “I think it’s real nice here as far as no smoke coming out from the plant an no trash on the grounds. We’ve also got a filter system to take care of waste water. We continually take samples o water from retention ponds to chec for any pollution. Other plants look up to Du Pont in terms of keeping the en vironment clean. I’m real proud to work here.’’
