FOTOFAX SEPTEMBER, 1977 SHAPIRO RECOMMENDS COMMON SENSE FOR HEALTHY ECONOMY Irving S. Shapiro, Chairman of the Board of E. I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co., recently spoke on the state of the American economy at the Southern Governors' Conference in San Antonio, Texas. He cited some very interesting observations about "the new era of American economy." Mr. Shapiro, who says he is an optimist by nature, believes the economy is generally healthy but in need of some changes. He recognized the economy as a national resource with limits and actually perishable unless its uses and goals are balanced. Most importantly, he said supply must be balanced with demand, especially in the energy area where there is a concern for near-term and long-term supply. Mr. Shapiro remarked that "common sense" and "balanced priorities" are vital in making decisions affecting the economy. As it stands now, he said, there are too many single-minded special interest groups such as "consumerists, environmentalists, and many other -ists, including some industrialists" who fail to see all sides of the issue and balance the goals accordingly. As an example of this "one dimensional thinking", Mr. Shapiro cited the area of environmental protection. At one of the Du Pont plants, an investment of $1.2 million in air pollution control equipment resulted in a 94 percent reduction of particulate emissions. This, he said, was "an excellent investment by any standard". But a statute required an additional reduction of 3 percent. This cost an additional $1.8 million and "there is no detectable difference in air quality". Mr. Shapiro believes this kind of waste must be stopped. In conclusion, Mr. Shapiro called for "common sense, and more careful balance in the use of our resources," so that "everyone will benefit . . . and our economy, which is sound but not immortal, will serve us better."
