MAY, 1978 DERA— FAMILY RECREATION YEAR ROUND The 1109 members of Du Pont Employees Recreation Association (DERA) and their families and friends participate in a wide range of sports and leisure activities during the year. President Terrell Orr and the board of directors meet monthly to transact business matters and to coordinate activities. Membership also means discounts on purchases at many area businesses and special attractions. Janet Murr, secretary, has discount coupons for admission to Six Flags, Opryland, Disneyworld, Ghost Town, Frontierland and other Maggie Valley attractions, and admission tickets to Carowinds at $1 off the regular price. She will answer any questions or accept the $5 membership dues from employees who have not joined. See Janet at her desk in the safety office. Other DERA officers are Earle Johnson, vice president, and Chan Hubbard, treasurer. Seasonal activities include special events for children, dances for adults and the plant picnic for the entire family. There are organized team sports with participation in league play and facilities for individual sports. Excellent facilities are available for picnicking at Lake DERA, High Falls and Guion House, and for camping at Lake DERA, High Falls and Grassy Creek. SUMMER ACTIVITIES With summer almost here. Lake DERA will soon be the busiest place on the property, with its facilities for swimming, camping and picnicking. Fred Ballard, chairman, says the lake is "one of the nicest things ever done for Du Pont people." A nominal fee is charged for electrical hookups at the various campsites. Beginning June 1, Pam Trawick and Susan Wetzel will begin work as lake attendants, checking people in and out, keeping vending machines filled and keeping the area in order. Primitive camp sites are available at Hooker Falls, with no facilities except spaces for tents, according to Jimmy Jacobs, chairman of the camping and hiking committee. One site is available at Grassy Creek for those who want to camp away from others. Hiking trails follow the river to the scenic Bridal Veil Falls, Triple Falls, High Falls and Hooker Falls. Maps of the property marking major areas of interest are being prepared to help members and families find their way more easily. The trails, however, will not be marked. The Guion House is available for overnight visits, cookouts, picnics and other such events. Once a month, it is reserved for a musical evening, when employees who play string instruments. get together for a practice session. Various sports equipment including volleyball, horse shoes, basketball and softball is available. The house is also used for plant parties and plant visitors. Carl Lambert, chairman, said that dates for the summer months are being filled quickly. TEAM SPORTS The golf league for 1978 is now being organized, with play to begin June 7 at Etowah Valley Golf Course. Teams will play on Wednesdays, with tee-off time between 5 and 6 p.m. Sign-up sheets are available in the DERA / safety office, according to Volney Tinsley, golf chairman. New league officers are Tom Bailey, president; Larry Van Der Vliet, vice president and secretary; and Bob McBee, treasurer. Two softball teams with about 15 members each have signed up with the Transylvania County League, with 22 teams. Play began May 11 and will continue through July, according to Dave Hannah, chairman. Each team plays an average of two games a week, with Tuesday games played at the Du Pont field, and other games played at the South Broad Field, Camp Straus and Schenck Job Corps. Roy Sheehan is captain of the A Shift team and Gary Miller is captain of the C Shift team. (Continued on Page 2)
