FOTOFAX BREVARD PLANT PHOTO PRODUCTS DEPARTMENT FOCUS: SOME THINGS TO BE PROUD OF Our overall safety performance continues to show Improve ment. The one-week S&F Safety Survey In April concentrated on Safety in the Work Environment, Employee Work Practices, and Process Hazards Management. All of these categories are important, but I particularly want to comment on Employee Work Practices. An S&F special emphasis audit of employee work practices is an in-depth analysis of how individual work ers perform. It Is a measure of job knowledge, job perform ance, and housekeeping. Unsafe acts or conditions are care fully tabulated. The number of safety violations observed is the basis for our rating in this category. I was pleased with the results. The report stated, “The plant has made significant im provements in this category since the last survey. Of the 160 employees observed working, only two were committing un safe acts. The calculated unsafe index is 1.2 which is in the ex cellent range.” While other factors lowered our rating to good. It Is still gratifying to see significant improvement. This favor able trend is also reflected in our off-the-job injury statistics where year-to-date performance has been outstanding. In addition, others have recognized our improvement. This week the plant received a Certificate of Achievement from the Chemical Manufacturers Association for having worked through 1981 without experiencing a lost work-day case. The certificate is posted on the Safety Bulletin Board, in the main corridor, so be sure to stop by and see it. We can take pride in these improvements. My thanks to each employee for support of the plant safety effort, but there Is not time for complacency. I urge that each one accept safety as a personal responsibility. If we do, I anticipate further over all gains in safety to continue. ^ tf . The Official World’s Fair Band, sponsored by DuPont, is a highly visible symbol of the Company’s support of the 1982 Knoxville spectacular. Band members’ hats carry the DuPont oval, and a flag bearer carries a DuPont banner. Other Company contributions are not as noticeable, but many of our products will add to the overall success of the event. Marching Band members will be comfortable in lightweight uniforms of DuPont “Dacron” polyester and cotton. The uni forms are treated with DuPont “Zepel” to repel water and stains. Long hours of marching will be easier in special boots, made by Bostonian, with special stress re lief construction using DuPont “Hytrel” polyester elastomer. “Hytrel” is a highly resilient thermoplastic combining many properties of rubber and plastics. Hytrel is easy to work with and highly resistant to flex-fatigue. To allow the ultimate comfort, fit, and freedom of motion, the three flag bearers’ body suits are made with “Lycra” spandex, Du Pont’s premium fiber for such clothing. Drummers in the band will be using instruments supplied by Pearl International of Nashville. The drumheads, by Remo of Cali fornia, are made of DuPont “My lar” polyester film to be much more durable than conventional skin heads. “Mylar” is unaffected by moisture, highly resistant to stretching and puncturing. What could be worse for a drummer than a split drumhead? A broken stick. That’s why the percussionists are using Dura- line “Supersticks,” reinforced with DuPont “Kevlar” aramid fi ber. “Kevlar” is used in bullet proof vests, premium radial tires and boat hulls. Pound for pound, it’s 5 times stronger than steel. The Sunsphere, 266-foot-high theme structure of the fair, is topped by a golden globe, 72 feet in diameter. The globe is formed of 24K gold-plated safety glass— with safety assured by DuPont “Butacite” polyvinyl sheeting. DuPont “Stren,” America’s largest selling premium fishing line, is sponsoring two major World’s Fair events: the “Stren” World’s Fair Fishing Tournament goes from May 1 through October 31 on Tennessee lakes within an hour’s drive of Knoxville. The sec ond event is for National Fishing Week, in June, when “Stren” ac tivities include a one-day fishing tournament, fishing seminars, and a fishing trip for under privileged children. Whether you wear it, see it, fish with it, or whatever—there’s a lot of DuPont at the 1982 World’s Fair. And it’s all a part of “Better things for better living—from DuPont.” Address Correction Requested Bulk Rate Box 267, Brevard, N.C. 28712 U.S. Postage OLIVER J 0WN8EY ROUTE 1 BOX 60 PISGAH FOREST N C 28768 PAID Brevard, N.
