Fifteen Letter Men and Coaches Held
Last Meeting of 1926 Season on Jan
uary 18, in the School Cafeteria
Theron Brown, for the past two sea
sons star tackle of the Greensboro High
grid team and for the past season a
member of the mythical all-state high
school eleven, was elected to lead the
destinies of the G. H. S. outfit during
the coming season at a meeting of the
letter men of the squad, w’hich Yvas held
January 18 in the school cafeteria.
Only four men will be absent from
next year’s squad. Captain Ned Lips
comb, Willard Watson, “Dizzy” Har
grove, and “Chuck” Burgess having
been the only men to bid farewell to
high school mole skins at the end of the
past season. With a wealth of material
on hand, next season should find
Greensboro High School represented by
a strong outfit and one that should be
a strong bid for next years’ state cham
pionship.
Aside from the fifteen men that were
on hand at the meeting. Coach Christy
Fordham was also present. Although
he was not connected with the high
school faculty during the past season
he spent a good deal of his time help
ing Coaches Coletrane and Routh and
it was partly through his aid that the
“Purple and Gold” put such a strong
squad on the field during the past sea
son.

Coach Coletrane told the boys that

Continuing their losing streak, the
Greensboro High School basketball
team lost to Reidsville by a 15-13 score
at Reidsville Friday, February 4.
the fray at the first whistle and before
she could strike her stride, Reidsville
had piled up a four-point lead and the
quarter mark found her sitting pretty
on the big end of 8 to 4 score. In an
attempt to turn the tide the Greensboro
first squad was rushed into the game,
but the best she could do was to hold
Reidsville to a 11 to 4 score at the
half mark.
Neither team was able to add further
scoring to the evening’s fray in the
third quarter, this part of the game
purely defensive. In the last quarter
however Greensboro struck her real
stride and in this quarter the Gate
City lads came within two points of
tying the score.
Pettigrew, of Reidsville, was the high
scorer of the evening. Taylor, of
Greensboro following close behind.

DURHAM TROUNCES
GREENSBORO QUINT
Durham Held Big End of Score
Throughout the En
tire Contest
BOXING BETWEEN HALVES
On February 3rd, at Chapel Hill, the
University freshmen defeated the
Greensboro High School basketball team
with a 24-11 score. The freshman team
was too fast for the high school boys,
and at no time was there doubt as to the
outcome of the game. Clelaud starred
for Carolina.
The Greensboro Lligh basketball out
fit was at home for the Durham team
Wednesday night, January 19, at Cald
well gym, and right royally did they
entertain their visitors when they al
lowed them to grab the top of a 37 to 21
score.
Durham held the big end of the score
throughout the entire contest with the
exception of the first few seconds of
play when Greensboro held a slight lead.
However, G. H. S. fans had hardly be
gun to congratulate themselves on ob
taining an early lead when the two
times state champs and runners-up at
the national meet both times, unleashed
a terrible passing attack that the wear
ers of the Purple and Gold were power
less to resist.
Between the halves of the game
“Red” Ogburn and “Red” Parrish boxed
three furious rounds to a draw. Both
“Red” Bishop, Ogburn’s manager, and
“Red” Wood, Parrish’s manager, were
highly indignant at what they termed
the “Raw decision” handed them by
Referee “Red” Routh, and both ex
pressed the willingness to match their
men at some future date providing an
other referee could be secured. Reliable
reports have it that the next time these
two huskies meet, “Red” Grange will
be the third man in the ring.
