Page Four HIGH LIFE May 6, 1937 CHEMISTRY CLASS GATHERS MATERIAL ROBERTA COWLES WINS ST. MARY’S SCHOLARSHIP Visit City Water Works, Local Dairy Plant and Sulphuric Acid Plant. MAKE INTERESTING STUDY Did you know that, if for some reason, the water supply were cut off, Greens boro would have only enough water to last for two days? This was one of the interesting facts that the Creative Chem istry class learned when they visited the city water works recently. They found also that the city uses about five million gallons of water every 24 hours, and that the two reser voirs hold about 21 million gallons of water. The group also visited a local dairy plant, where they saw how the milk re ceived from the farmers is carefnlly in spected and how payment for it is made on a basis of percentage of butterfat found rather than on a basis of volume. The group also visited the sulphuric acid plant where 600 tons of sulphuric acid are produced weekly, and where they learned that the body of a man, falling into the chambers where the acid is produced, would be dissolved in a very short time. Reports on the different plants vis ited have been made and are being col lected in a scrapbook as part of the necessary requirements of the course. Experiments are also part of the class program, and the students are preparing their own laboratory manuals. Some of the most interesting experiments were related to the making of soap and cleansing powders, etching glass, and removing iron rust. Out of 20 students, ten made A’s, nine made B’s, and one made C during the last report period. Achieves Coveted Prize Against Compe tition Covering North and South Carolina.
