March 20, 1942 HIGH LIFE Page Five \ =H Sportsman's Holiday By EARLE HOLLIDAY THERE’S NO DOUBT no^Y that spring is really here, as the sound of horsehide meeting leather floats off the local diamond and the groans come off the gridiron of spring football. Yes, Coach Bob Jamieson has packed away the basketball equipment of a very suc cessful season for another year, and other sports are ready to enter the local spot. Althouh many of last year’s (liamond stars are gone, Coach “Jabbo” John son, who deserves plenty of praise for taking the reins of this year’s team with the duties of regular classes, the supply store and in addition the defense course already on his shoulders, has started moulding the 1942 team around stars of last year’s squad and his Jun ior Legion teams. IN('ETH)EI) AMONG THESE arc players like Harold (Skinny) Brown. Bennett Newell. Buddy ^lulligan, Tom Aydelette, (’arl Phihhs. "Willard Hobbs and Garland lYolfe. WTth a nucleus like this the "Whirlwinds will put forth admiral)le competition to all foes on the diamond this year. On the opposite front Coach Bob Jamieson is already giving his football charges heavy work in preparation for next fall. Missing from these are many stars who shone in thet lineup last sea- soJi, but they are being replaced by several hold-overs from the team and many new, eager hopefuls.' IN THE FORAYARD AY ALL players of proved calibre such as Alarshall TKwTT Allen, Louis Allen, Dave Sewell and J. AAT Kivette, who has been trans ferred from the backfield to help fill the hole left by Garland AA'olfe and Jim Grooiiie, will be read.v for action, while the backfield boasts of Bill McCormick, Bob McFarland and others. PROBABLY THE MOST outstand ing person missing at these workouts is Jim Day, the hard-working line mentor, who has worked wonder.s the past few years. However, capable as sistance for Jamieson is coming from G. O. Mann, recently added to" the coaching staff, who has already gained favor with the boys and is doing good work. Five Letter men Returning Form 1942 Tennis Team Forming the tennis squad around four returning letteimien. Coach G. O. Mann’s team is expected to repeat last year’s feat of trouncing every scho lastic foe. AA'hen Coach Jim Day resigned, G. O. Mann took over his assignments of the tennis team as well as those of assis tant football coach. Mann announces work with four lettermeii and one re- .serve of last season will begin next week and that a tournament will be staged to decide the seeding of the players on the team. The four returning lettermeii are Joe Coleman, Don Garrett. Emry Green and Bill Cavan, who were outstanding on the court last spring. Coach Mann ITCTT’RED above is G. O. Jim Smith Starts Drive The first touchdown came after Jim Smith, converted end, iiiterct'pted a Blue pass on his own 40 and streaked to the Blues’ l.A-yard stripe. Five jilays later Art A"aii scored after he and AA'olfe’s attempt at cracking the AA’hites’ lines. .Tim Smith's placement for extra point was good. Jim Borberly, rising sophomore tail back, scored the final marker on a seven-yard dash but Smith’s attempt for the extra point went wide. ' . . Stan ley .Tohnson. coach of the team, de clared in an interview this week that the prospects for the forthcoming team were very good, et’en though only seven lettermen are returning this year. He also stated that the group’s biggest ob stacle lay in transportation, a diffi culty caused by the rubber shortage. This year’s schedule includes six home games and six encounters on enemy grounds. The schedule is as follows: March 27—Burlington at Greensboro. April 7—High Point at Greensboro. April 10—Greensboro at Charlotte. April 14—GreensborO' at AATnston-Sa- lem. April 17—Greenslx)ro at Burlington. April 21—Salisbury at Greensboro. April 24—AATnston-Salem at Greens boro. April 28—^Charlotte at Greensboro. May 1—Greensboro at High Point. Koepfle Named Captain Of '42-'43 Cage Team A1 Koepfle, all-conference guard, on Coach Boh Jamieson’s Purple AATiirl- winds was elected captain of the 1942- 194.') (|uint by his teammates last week. Koepfie will replace Tom Aydelette who lias been a main threat to op ponent teams the entire season. Koepfle has been named on several all-conference teams and was given high rating by Chuck Tjiylor, one of tlu' country’s foremost basketeers, who visited here during the past season. Koepfle was second in the scoring for the AA'hirlies this season, Gus Pas chal. another all-conference player, tak ing first honors. G. O. Mann Fills Vacancy Left By Day’s Resignation Whirlies Named No. 2 Team; Deadlocked With Durham Basketball officials, in picking the states’ five leading teams, placed Greensboro in the number two spot, deadlocked with Durham. The Chil dren's home team of Lexington took the number one spot with 20 wins and two defeats—the last two were to col lege freshman teams. Children’s home defeated Greensboro twice by seven points one game and 23 the next. But the AA^hirlwinds, who outplayed the Durham team till the last 10 seconds, lost the state class A championship to Durham by one point. The Durham team beat the Duke freshmen, while Children’s home went down with a defeat from the frosh five. Both Greensboro and Durham were invited to participate in the Duke southern high schooi tournament, but Children’s home was not. Barium Springs was named the num ber four team and Kannapolis the num ber five team in the state. (Buck) Alann, former Bes semer high mentor, has assumed his duties here as assistant to head coach Boh .lamieson, as liim coach in spring football practice, and teacher for two history classes formerly conducted by Day. Coach Mann comes to Senior high with a good siwrts record, his crack Bessemer high basketball five having won the Guilford high invitational meet the last night of his tutorship. Alann also has produced three county (‘ham- pionship quintets, two champion foot ball teams and two chami)ion baseball nines. To Coach Tennis Besides assisting Jamieson with foot ball, Alann will devote the rest of his time to coaching tennis and track, while assuming three physical educa tion classes. Commenting on the new coach’s ar rival, (Tiach Ja'inieson stated. “Al though we hated to lose such a tine coach as Jim Day, we feel sure that Buck Mann will ably fill his shoes.” Day, incidentally, has begun work in the recreation department of the city as assistant to Tom .lenrette, former local wrestling coach.
