Page 6 THE HIGH LffE September, 24, 1976 Dr. Henry Vansant Whirlies Under New Reins Irving to pass Barrett Spikes Opponents Improving on a 11-3 record will be expected of Grimsley’s Girl’s Volleyball team as 5 of the 6 starters from last year return. ‘ ‘The team is strong and has. depth.” said Coach Addison and also said “We have a good chance to improve on last year’s record.” Powerful spikers Rita Barrett and newcomer Laura Wolfe will punish the other teams as setters junior- Martha Alspaugh and senior- Lynne Gilbert set the plays up for them. Shell Spriull and Les Saleeby are returning starters who make this a tough team to beat in area volleyball. Power Volleyball is the name of the game and.it is not played like gym volleyball. UNC-G officials usually referee the games watching for the gym style carries, keeping score and net violations. A floater in the volleyball is the serve which is used most often. The server throws the ball up then punches it with her hand and this makes the ball change direction in mid flight. The ball is hit with the forearm from underneath with the hands clasped. Dudley and High Point Central will furnish the most competition for Grimsley. The Conference winner goes to the regional then the State as Grimsley has a good chance of going all the way. Letterwomen Susan Lore, Nina Heard and Donna Watson bring experience while Teni Wallace, Kris Gross, Teresa Arnold, Kathy Vanselou and Becky Jones add new eagerness to p'lay iveVl. The team practices every day to 5:30 gaining experience for the newcomers and sharping skills for the starters. Summer leagues and camps were used by members of the team to try and become the best. All home games are held in the gym and every one is encouragec to come out and cheer for a fast paced game of volleyball. No. 1 Dudley against the vast improved Grimsley was the first match of the year. Grimsley fell victim to Dudley in a hard emotion packed game 3-2. The team lost the first 2 games 5-15 and 4-15 then came back fighting 15-5 and 15-7. The fifth and final game was a scraper as both teams faught it with all they had, but Dudley triumphanted 15-12 as Grimsley gave valent effort. Rita Barrett left her mark at Dudley as one of her powerful spikes staggered a Dudley player in the head which left the girl stumbling. Wolfe and Barrett both showed that Grimsley will be a powerhouse with set ups from Alspaugh and Gilbert. Miss Addison used this mateh to substitute freely maybe looking for some unforseen talent. Gary Sue This year’s addition of the Grimsley Whirlies football team is under new head coach. Dr. Henry Vansant. Dr. Vansant brought with him many new coaches to the Whirlies’ staff. Dr. Vansant attended college at E.C.U. and Alabama. Dr. Vansant came to Grimsley from Fayetteville Seventy-First and he also coached at Guilford College. In an interview with Dr. Vansant he stated that instead of setting a goal for an undefeated season and a State Champion ship, he said that he would like to finish above .500 and possibly attain a Conference Champion ship. On offense the Whirlies are lead at Quarterbaek by David Irvin, but the key to the Whirlies powerful offense is speedster Glen Ford. Springing Ford on his big gains will be monstrous Mark Sugg. The Whirlie defensive line is anchored by headhunter Thearnest Smalley, while the defensive backfield is lead by hard-hitting Keith Blaek. In the Whirlies season opener against powerful High Point Andrews, who were picked to win their Conference Championship, Grimsley upsets the Red Raiders 7-3. The first half was somewhat of a defensive struggle as both teams mounted little offense. The Whirlies came out ready to play as they mounted a slight drive. However the Grimsley drive was halted by the Red Raiders stiff defense. As. the first half ended Andrews managed to boot a field goal for a 3-0 lead. Late in third quarter the Whirlies drive began after Andrews was penalized 15 yards. A super catch by David Cox kept the drive alive as they penetrated deep into Andrews territory. Keith Black then hit the line for a short gain. Then Danny Shaver squeezed over for the Whirlie score. Although Andrews threatened late in the contest the Whirlies managed to hold on for the victory. The coaching staff pointed out that Thearnest Smalley was the most outstanding defensive player of the game, while on offense Vernon Greene received the honor. IHEHUMBERONEKMUR OFYDUNeAMERIUIIS BYOUNGAIIIERKANS. You don’t mean to be. But you are. The numbers are simple. Latest available figures show that 8,000 American people between the ages of 15 and 25 died in alcohol related crashes. And almost all the drunk drivers who caused those crashes were also under 25. 1,380 died in combat. 3,420 committed suicide. 2,731 died of cancer. ——— You march against war. You fight for clean air and clean water. You eat natural foods. You practice yoga. You are so much for life. And you are so much against killing. It would be unthinkable for you to kill another human being on purpose. So then, why is this -happening? DRUNK DRIVER, DEPT. In the Whirlies next contest they just couldn’t quite beat the clock or the Ragsdale Tigers in a close and exciting game. The Whirlies showing a peaceful and explosive offense just couldn’t quite put the fihal points on the board, thus causing Grimsley their second defeat in a row 31-28. The Grimsley scoring began after halfback Glen Ford broke loose for a brilliant fifty yard gallop and was caught from behind at the one yard line. Then quarterback David Irvin did the rest as he sneaked across for the first Whirlie touchdown. Rags dale fought right back with a devastating drive and a long run by the Ragsdale runner back to tie the score a 7-7. Grimsley came right back with their strong running game to take the lead once again on a Glen Ford touchdown. With time running out in the second quarter Ragsdale pulled a trick play on the Whirlies defense, scoring on a fake field goal with a pass for another Ragsdale touchdown. The half ended with the Ragsdale Tigers holding a slight lead. The second half was a carbon copy of the first with both teams scoring at will. Grimsley took the second half kick-off and drove the length of the field with the explosive running of Glen Ford and quarterback David Irvin. The Whirlies drove all the way to the one yard line with David Irvin driving the ball over for another Grimsley score and the Whirlies had the lead once again 20-14. Ragsdale scored once again with a long run to put the Tigers back in the lead 21-20. The fourth quarter began with the mighty Whirlie offense driving once again on numerous runs by speedster Glen Ford. The final Grimsley score came on a short sprint by Glen Ford from the 7 yard line. Ragsdale came back again with another touch down and a field goal to regain the lead 31-28. Grimsley was not going to give in easy as they came fighting right back with a long scoring run by Glen Ford, however the touchdown was called back on a holding call. Grimsley could not quite put the final points on the board as they ran out of steam. The game ended with Ragsdale winning 31-28. Glen Ford starred in the game with an outstanding 170 yard rushing performance while David Irvin scrambled for 97. Cross Country When the Whirlies and the Pirates meet head to head it is always a duel. Grimsley tri umphed 23-32 as it was the hardest meet of the year, and one of the most challenging for Morton. Morton and John George of Page locked into a battle as Morton came out the victor by 4 seconds on the fast and flat course. Benfield and the returning Abels gave fine performances and finished 4th and 5th respectively. Imbus was right behind them in 6th while Hoagan came in 7th to top off the fearsome fivesome of Grimsley. Grimsley and Page will lock up 6 more times in meets this year as each team will fight to the finish line this year. The Grimsley Invitational Cross-Country Meet will be held on Grimsley own course on Oct. 9th, and this meet will be one nf the most excitingly meet held as the best teams in the State compete for the coverted honor. The City Championship will be at Grimsley, and this should be a tight race for the individual first place between Morton, George and Bennett of Dudley. Reynolds of Winston-Salem will hold the Conference Championship be cause of their win last year.
