October 29, 1976 HIGH LIFE Page 7 Girls Volleyball Finishes Second Grimsley’s Volleyball team beat no. 1 Dudley in a thriller of a match. Grimsley took Dudley by storm on with a score of 3-2 in a close and hard fought win.TheWhirlies took Dudley off-guard in the first two games 15-4 and 15-9. Then the match became close with Grimsley losing the next two games in a tight score of 12-15 and 11-15, but the team put their hearts into the last game. With their nerves on edge, the volleyball team put it together in the final game triumphing 15-10 and taking the match 3-2. “We played our hearts out.’’ quoted Junior Rita Barrett, the powerful spiker and co-captain. Identical records of 13-1 for both Grimsley and Dudley will make for a playoff to decide the conference champion. Because only one team from each conference is allowed to play in the Regional, this means two of the best teams in the state will battle it out in the conference. Coach Addison commended the come from behind win over Smith 3-2 in which the Whirlies had a let-down after the Dudley game. Winning the first game 15-5 the team lost the next two 9-15 and 10-15 but they showed their championship form winning the last game 15-13. Coach Addison said the leadership of co-captains Barrett and Lynn Gilbert pulled Grimsley through, also the team played like there was no tomorrow. Lynn Gilbert and Les Saleeby both seniors are hoping for their last chance at a championship. While the rest of the starting Juniors, Barrett, Martha Als- paugh, Laura Wolfe and want to get one under their belt early. The conference champion will go to the East Regional and compete against the other conference winners. After three rounds of play the 2 top teams from the East and West will meet for the State Championship on Nov. 4 at Raleigh . Whoever wins the best 3 out of 5 matches will be the State Champion. The team is improving after each game and they work hard in practice describes Miss Addison. They have already beat most teams in the conference once and this was accomplished in one of the hardest conferences in volleyball. Junior Loom Wolfe jumps high for the spike* Soccer Team Seeks Playoffs By Steve Theriot The Whirlie Soccer Team appears ready to avenge last years team that was prevented from participating in the state playoffs by a controversial loss to Page. The team, thus far in the season, posts a respectable 5-2-1 record and is still very active in the playoff picture. Several Whirlies have been most instrumental in the initial success of the team, these include Tim Faircloth, Eric Blum, Joe Crawford, David Bigham, and Neil “Junkman” Goodman. All of the players named above are involved with the teams offensive effort. Unfortunately a rule that seems to hold true is that the offensive starters are the stars while the defensive starters who work equally as strenous go virtually unknown. Some of the defensive players who have been outstand ing are John Rose, Fred Deluca, Ray Essa, Richard Spurlin, Matt Driscall, and Scott Smith. Goalies, Rose and Smith are especially valuable because in case of a tie in tournament play each team receives five penalty kicks and our goalies have been very successful in playing these shots. Soccer has always been one of the winningest sports at Grims ley. Last years team finished ranked in the top 10 in the state with a 10-3 record. This seasons team has been ranked in top 10 already this year in the number 7 position. The teams goal is to win the Sectional Tournament tenta tively planned to be held at Jamieson Stadium November 3-5. The winner of the Sectional Tournament advances towards the State Championship. In the regular season opener September 21, the Whirlies came away with a 5-3 decision over Smith. This was the first of three triumphs the team was to win over Smith so far this season. Next the Whirlies traveled to Asheville were they were to lose by a count of 2-1. It was a long ride home after this close defeat. Dudley was the next victim of the mighty Whirlies as they fell 3-2. A trip to Ravens Croft for the Ravens Croft Invitational was next in store for the team. A 2-0 loss to Camp Lejune in the tournament opener, a 6-5 double overtime win over Smiths (this game was decided by jfenalty kicks), and a big 5-1 win in the contest with Charlotte Latin. Overall they finished fifth in the tourney. Page was the next opponent the team faced. In a hard fought battle the game ended in a 2-2 tie, even a overtime period could not produce a victor. Another game with Smith ended with a Grimsley victory, this one by a 4-2 verdict. Tennis Girls Struggle By Charlie Brown Inexperience is hurting a young tennis team, but the team is improving rapidly. No. 1 seed, Janis Hall is a promising possibility to play in the State Championship. Janis, only a junior, is Grimsley’s main hope in the sectional tournament, but she may have to face the defending state champion in the tournament. Grimsley’s record is 3-6 with wins over Dudley 9-0 and East Forsyth twice 7-2 and 7-2. Donna Doles and Barbara Bartis teamed up in doubles to give one of the most exciting matches played against Dudley. With the games tied at one game apiece and down 5-2 in the third game the girls battled back to win 7-5. Karen Greenberg, the no. 2 player, prefers doubles and could also be a decisive figure in the sectional. Wendy Liebling no. 3, Cathy Pearlman 4th, Paula Christan 5th, Elizabeth Stamey 6th and Elyn Sykes round out the top players on the thirty women ^quad. Grimsley’s doubles teams, who are improving day by dav. are Carol Grolnick and Karrie Manson, Hall and Eleanor Smith and of course the team of Bartis and Doles. Cohesiveness of the doubles partners is getting better every day. “Improvement is seen every day” said Coach Tamblynon the tennis team. Miss Tamblyn is striving to get the team ready for the sectional and next year with more experienced tennis players ready to roar. Football Team Again By Billy Tsintzos Well Grimsley Whirlie sports fans, it’s that time again. It’s, “Cut Down the Whirlie Football Team” hour. Although I had a few angred individuals attempt ing to massage my throat after my first edition of the Benchwarmer, 1 decided that since this will be the last time I’ll have a chance to slice the football team I’m not gonna waste it. Nevertheless, 1 hope no one wants to waste me after I get through writing this. I would appreciate being able to decide which weapon I am to be killed with. But please, there is one deadly weapon that I would not like used upon me. This is a certain drug, a new drug, commonly called by many of the Whirlies, the GEEFER drug. Heaven help whoever is unfortu nate enough to experience this trip. Well-enough of that, it’s back to football. Recently a friend of mine by the name of Albert Pic was benched. Although the facts of the case were not given, it seems that A1 took a plunge one day after he had been plunging something else all afternoon. If you really want to know the truth in this mysterious case, check under the new travel information guide. The Treacherous Appalachian Foot hills. Now its time to get mean for a second; during the Page game, all the Whirlies saw was the back side of someone nicknamed Boom Boom leaving them in a trail of dust. Also, I do believe we got beat in that game, or may I say annihilated, humliated, demo lished, mutilated, and plain ole stomped. Well, anyhow I remember one player, who has happened to be sitting the bench all season, played one heck of a game. That is when the coaching staff finally put him in. I think you coaches kinda overlooked this fella, didn’t ya. He gets more psyched up for a game than any other player on the team, and during the time he was in action, coaches, he was bustin heads, something I can’t say for the rest of the team. David Irvin, our star quarter back suffered an ankle injury a couple weeks ago. But surprising ly enough, it didn’t occur on the playing field. It happened in the school parking lot when David stumbled while racing around his car to open the door for his Varsity Football ICont. from page 6] reception so he threw the ball in the direction of the nearest Whirlie who jumped on the loose ball preserving the tie. That is why he did not get much sleep that night. Leading the team from .his position of quarterback has been Rod Elk'.ns. Elkins has proved himself an excellent passer as well as a proficient scrambler. Rod received much praise from Coach Whitley for his efforts. On the receiving end of Elkins aireals has been a trio of ends, Steve Tracy, Ferny Cruz, Delany Bush, and Maurice Jolly. Also outstand ing thus far this year has been Tony Gilyard and Frank Carpen ter. On the injured list one name stands out, star fullback Kyle. Neve. Neve is lost for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder seperation. favorite gal. That’s the breaks Casanova. Recently at J.V. football games, Rudolf Valentino Yost has been approaching young ladies in the stands with his eyes set on romance. In my opinion, 1 think Rudolf should slap it down and put it away. Oh, by the way. 1 promised not to get off on one of the brothers this time, so I’ll say, “Chicken” I’m gonna let you live for once! Well lemme tell ya, 1 think Danny Shaver should quit driving, 1 believe he drives a little too fast for me. 1 mean, yesterday for example, he passed somebody on tbe Parkway going so fast, his wheels caught on fire. A twenty-two car pile-up was the result. This was because the melted rubber all over the street acted like glue and was catching cars like flies. Danny is now contemplating whether or not to attach two jet engines to his car for a little added speed. Mark Sugg recently went to a world-wide convention of the famous group of people: “The Meat Eaters.” Many countries represented the convention, some included, Russia, France, Ger many. and ugh, Columbia. Heres a quick note, last week it was released that famed lover Johnny Hodges was recently engaged to his pet racoon. Many years of happiness Johnny. Bulletin: Missionary Lee Evans ost in the jungles of Africa after saving souls. Update next edition. David Bolten recently returned from his trip to Mars and gave a detailed explanation of how he found it really “far out.” Mark Kronenfeld donated his chest to the United States Army, where there, the military will study it and later use it as a new form of armor for tanks. Oh. by the way, there will be a new face in the crowd during baseball tryouts, his name is T-Ernest. Scouting reports state that he carries a big bat. Well, it looks like I’m running out of people to get off on, even though I'd love to cut down David Cox. But lately, he blockhead has had so many girls hanging on him, he hasn’t had a free moment to do anything, including play football, and by the way he is not too good with girls either. But, the time has come for me to go, and when I return, we’ll have another show. Chow! Next: I SAY HELLO TO THE BAS KETBALL TEAM.
