Page 6 HIGH LIFE Morton Races To 2nd In State By Charlie Brown Dan Morton captured second place and broke the old course record in the North Carolina Cross-Country State Champion ships. Only a Junior, Dan Morton and Billy Lynch of Sanderson were expected to and did duel for the coveted individual championship. But the defending state champion prevailed as Lynch won in 14:52 to Morton’s 15:07 on the three mile course. The meet was run on Finely Golf course on November 13 with R.J. Reynolds taking the team title as that made it three years in a row for them. Both runners broke the old course record in a definitely fast field of cross-country runners. Dan felt the first mile was very fast and at the end he could not catch Lynch who has a fast kick. For Dan’s effort’s he received a blank certificate that he has to fill out himself. We wonder what kind of trophies football players get. Grimsley finished second in the City and third in the conference Championships behind Reynolds and Page. In the Conference Varsity race, Grimsley’s top seven Morton, Cliff Abels, Paul Bailey, Kent Benfield, Scott Imbus, Gary Hoagland and Jay Bennett tried but could not put it together. The J.V. race was somewhat funny as Grimsley took second place behind Reynolds with two sophs Keith Miller and Scott Toben. Two sprinters Charlie Brown and Garcia Chavis and two females Molly Berry and Amy Stapleton. 280 runners were massed for the start of the sectional with only 2 teams and 5 individuals going to the State. Reynolds and Page were the teams that went and Dan Morton went with a new course record in 1st place. Grimsley as a team finished fourth behind third place Chapel Hill in the toughest sectional in the state. Senior Abels ended a fine career in 29th place with Soph Bailey a great 30th as Seniors Benfield 43th, Imbus 45th, Hoagland 48th finished good careers in cross country and Bennett an injured 113th. Dan Morton finished a fantastic season, breaking seven course records with a best time of 14:49 on Reynolds 3 mile course. He has been contacted by both Carolina and Duke and one coach says that he is the best prospect to come out of North Carolina in the last 10 years. On Grimsley’s course Dan has improved from last year’s 16:37 to 15:16 this year. Dan will be representing Team North Carolina in a Junior Olympic Cross-Country meet on Nov. 20 at N.C. State against other teams around the country, including Illinois and Washing ton, D.C. Benfield and Abels both had their best times this season of 16:42 and 16:44 respectively and first time senior Cross-Country runners Imbus 17:00 and Hoagland 17:37 did well this year. Sophomore Bailey could be a smoker next year with a best time of 17:13 and Junior Bennett could improve rapidly on his time of 18:01. Keith Miller and Scott Toben could add the talent needed to next year’s team to improve next season. Grimsley finished the season - in a year where the cross-country teams from all schools improved immensely in a stellar year of running. Too bad the winning teams get to use old uniforms while the losing teams get all new equipment. Tennis Wrap Up By Todd Williams This year’s girls’ tennis team, coached by Ms. Tamblyn, was a strong team but they just could not pull it out due to two losing streaks in the middle of the season. The team won it’s first match over East Forsyth, then lost it’s next six in a row, the first of the two losing streaks. The team then won its next five in a row, then lost the last two matches of the season to Page and High Point Central. Coach Tamblyn feels the team is improving rapidly and will be better id stronger next year. Led by three top seed players: Janice Hall, Karen Greenburg, and Wendy Liebling, they finished 6-8 overall and finished fifth out of thirty schools in the sectionals. Janice Hall qualified for the state tournament and was only beaten by Carola Hertle of Page. Wendy Jones feels this year’s team was fairly strong but feels it will be much stronger next year. Ms. Tamblyn feels confident of the team and gives much credit to not only the top players, but the whole team, who she is very proud of. This year’s squad .consisted of 40 girls. Wrestling Looks Good By Steve Khan Grimsley’s wrestling team is looking forward to another good season this year. So far thirty-five people have gone out for the team but there is no telling how many will stay due to the amount of difficult training involved. Coach Dennis Barbour stated that there are many returnees from past Whirlie teams who are rich in talent. These wrestlers include Qarance Mitchel, Jimmy Bowen (who is a two year champ), Roy Lee, Jeffery Bennett, Scott McDonald, Rickey Buckner, Rody Mintz, and Tyron Meadows. The Whirlies are undefeated and have won 51 straight matches - the fourth longest winning streak in North Carolina’s history. The season starts off on December 3 at 7 p.m. Grimsley is host to 8 other teams from Greensboro and Guilford County. A schedule will be placed in the main hall announcing upcoming matches. November 24. 1976 “Sue jumps to new heights’’ Basketball Team Gets Ready By Thad Damkoehler Grimsley’s varsity basketball team has the players and coaching to be number one this year. With many of the players coming back from last year’s varsity they should be very hard to beat. If that does not work, the Whirlies J.V. team was undefeat ed in conference play last year, those players will be helping out a lot. The first practice was Novem ber 1st, and since then, they have looked much better. Grimsley’s “Bench” or second string players are very good this year and if they can tire out the opposing teams first string they should rack up a lot of points. Coach Hickey said that he is very enthusiastic about the team and he thinks they will do better than last year. It will still depend on how hard the players try to improve themselves in practice, but with your encouragement they should be playing at 100%. The first game will an away game against High Point Andrews on December 1st. Please come to the games and give your support. The unit competed with eleven other units enroute to collecting their eleventh trophy. Led by Major Jim Dionne, the Grimsley unit competed in the military fancy drill category, and was the only unit to use military rifles; the rest used wooden or plastic rifles. Out of a possible 1500 points the winners picked up 1461. Their top categories were appearance and precision, where they got perfect scores in both. Master Sargeant F.J. Hale said, “This performance was fantastic for this time of year. They’ve been together for such a short time. They're much further along than last years team was at this point, and you see what thev did ” The team consists of Gunnery, Sargeant Paul Karlock, Captain Phil LeGrand Lt. Leonard Rankin, First Lt. Charlie Brooks, Second Lt. Danny Bymaster, Captain Ralph Gaebe, Gunnery Sargent Eric Lowell, Gunnery Sargent Steve Melton, Staff Sargent Mike Thomasine, Gun nery Sargent Richard Byrd. Private Sammy Smith, and Private Ray Strauss. The first Alternate is Henry Johnson. They competed against units of Army, Navy, and Air Force ROTC They were the only Marine Crops unit there. And Grimsley never settles for second. Besides the rifle drill. Major Jim Dionne (Drill Instructor) does an excellent sword manual. Most Grimsley students saw the units perform at a pep rally, and know their performances are excellent. The unit performs next on November 20, at Smithfield, North Carolina. f SWING AFTER SCHOOL Giet in on the fun of Racquet- ball America's fastest arowing sport Special Student Rates Now AvailabJe!
