By Billy Tsintzos The Greensboro Sports Council recently held a breakfast meeting in which they discussed the upcoming holiday basketball tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum which will feature the four city high school teams. The tournament will be staged on the weekend of December 29-30 and after the second night of basketball, a dance will be held in the coliseum auditorium. The meeting mostly dealt with ticket sales, money, and the number of people which will attend the games. Representa tives from the four high schools reported that tickets had been completely distributed and that there was a demand for more. The council agreed that the dance was a prime factor in ticket sales to the high schools and junior high schools. Many college students are also anxious to obtain tickets to the dance which will feature two bands, Bryce Street and Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose. The auditorium in which the dance will be held holds 4,000 people and it will be closed when it gets to that point. Many people questioned why the dance should be held in the arena instead, but actually the auditorium can hold more people. Also, tickets to the dance cannot be bought separately, they must be purchased along with the tickets to the basketball games. Tickets arc priced al $4.25 for the student booklet and $5.50 or the adult book. As of this writing, pairings for the first night of basketball have not been made. Most Whirlie and Page Pirate fans would not like to see the two teams matched against each other in the first round. Instead, the respective fans would like to see their clubs meet in the championship game in the second night of action. Trophies have already been ordered and will be awarded to the winners of the tournament. The contest will be just as the college Big Four Tournament in which the games will not affect the conference standing. Also, for these games to be a success, fan support must be at its peak, so everyone, relatives of the players, the cheerleaders, and the pep bands should come out and watch their son or daughter perform. The more people that come, the better it is. The financial aspect to the tournament is under control as it seems that sponsors have already contributed their support along with the increased number of ticket sales. Next season, this tournament will be expanded to include all of the county schools as well as the big four in the city. These contests will undoubtedly be a smashing success but spectators are desperately needed, so come out and watch the games. And remember, after the last night of basketball, everyone can dance until their feet fall off. DefencJing Champs Open Strong The 1976 Whirlie Grapplers have again proved wrestling is here to stay as far as Grimsley is concerned by their commendable performance in the Greensboro Invitational Wrestling Tourna ment. Led by Jimmy Bowen, Clarence Mitchell, and Roy Lee, all of whom captured the individual championship in their respective weight class, the team finished second to Ragsdale by a .score of 190 to 130. Many of the top teams in the state participated in this meet, thusly, Grimsiey’s high standing foreshadows many good things ahead this season for the Whirlies. The next goal the team is striving to accomplish is to advance on the list of most consecutive dual meet victories. Grimsley is currently ranked fourth in these standings with 51 victories, but they are only six victories out of second place. Page currently holds the second spot with 56 straight wins. The number one position presently claimed by Watauga High School is not yet within the reach of the team. Watauga won 113 in a row. In the Greensboro Invitational, Grimsley finished with a wrestler in the top four of almost every weight class. First place winners arc Clarence Mitchell in the 119 pount class, Roy Lee in the 155 pound class, and Jimmy Bowen in the 195 pound class. The two other wrestlers who made it to the finals are Scott MacDonald in Hit 112 pound class and Ricky Buckner at 126. To round out the rest of the team Frank Carpenter finished third at 138. Willie Crouch fourth at 98, Tyrone Meadows fourth at 132, Jeff Bennett fourth at 145, Donald Strachan fourth at 167, and Gary Marynard fifth at 185. Rodney Mintz, another regular starter did not compete.
