December 22, 1976 THE HIGH LIFE Page 7 All eyes are on the ball during J.V. Girls game. Wolfe Leads Whirlies By Charlie Brown Grimsley puts it together to beat Page 52-42 in Girl’s Varsity Basketball. The young Grimsley squad broke open a close game in the third quarter, and kept Page scoring flourishes to a minimum. Forward Laura Wolfe was the leading scorer with 14 points as Rita Barrett and Terri Wallace both burst through with 12 each. Barrett was the crowd exciter as she drove in for a turning lay-up and ran down a fast break of Page’s to keep the crowd up. Wolfe, back to full strength, was the most consistent player and an arising star Wallace was a clutch free-thrower. Guards Kris Gross. Mary Ellen Goforth, Susan Rizzo and Shell Spruill kept the ball moving, and Rizzo and Spruill both made fine defensive plays in the_^ourtl^^uarte!\^^^^_^___^____ With the top tour players on the team juniors, the skill gets better each game. High Point Andrews and Ragsdale both beat Grimsley in the first two games of the season, 32-28 and 48-42 respec tively. Both games were close and now Grimsley is back to full strength and looking ahead. Girl’s Junior Varsity Basketball is the newest addition to Grimsley’s Athletic program. Coach Richard Smith is doing his best to mold a group of young and very inexperienced players into a basketball team. A 2-0 record is posted by Grimsley in defeats of High Point Andrews and Smith with Neece Haith and Andy Barkley as the top scorers. The J.V. program could be a big help to Varsity basketball as it would bring in experienced talent. McDonald’s Student Scholarship Winner McDonalds would like to congratulate David Irvin on being selected a December Youth of the Month. This honor was presented to him for his outstanding contributions to his school and community. He not only excells in academics but in athletics and music as well. He has been listed in Who’s Who Among Greensboro Youth and Who’s Who Among American High School Students. David has received a $100 McDonalds scholarship payable to the school of his choice. By Steve Theriot They have the potential to be the best team in the history of the school and with twelve state champions we have had some pretty good teams. This was the way Coach Sawyer described his team’s prospects for the 1976-1977 season. Led by such stars as John Grezeszczak, Robert Bingham, Jim Raines, Mark Kronenfeld, Pete Gratale, Mark Leitner, and Rusty Lambe the team seems unstopable as they move into the season. Coach Sawyer also expressed hope that some of the more outstanding swimmers would receive some All-American rating. Particularly cited was the 200 medley relay. This relay has a chance of breaking the national record in this event. Robert Bingham, the reigning state 100 breastroke champion and record holder is, as a junior, the top returning swimmer from last year’s team. Bingham along with John Grezeszczak, who is the most outstanding swimmer on the team specializing in individual medley and the backstroke, will probably be the top point scorers in the meets ahead. Also returning are Jim Raines and Mark Kronenfeld, both are seniors and superb freestylers who will again this year excert their domience in the distance events. Pete Gratale a junior is back as the top butterflyer, Wes Benbow, last year’s top sprint- ster, and Mark Leitner, the reigning diving champion, are back as seniors. Mark will be hampered in the early sea.son by recent knee surgery but he is expected to recover him top form as the season wears on. This year’s team has a great amount of depth which will help the team roll up the points in the dual meets as will as some of the bigger meets such as the Emory Invitational, the Eastern Seabord, and the state. The swimmerswho will provide this depth are Bruce Procton and Fred Highfill in the breastroke. Chris Hipps, Andy Hudnell, Scott Sasser. Tommy Theriot, and Gary Baldwin ion the freestyle, David Trexler and Ronnie Styers in the butterfly, and Steve Theriot in 'the backstroke. Charlie Bauscrman will be what Coach Sawyer called a good ’’all-purpose” swimmer. The divers have always been an intregal part of the (cam. Last year they cemented the state championship by scoring nine points. We won that meet by eight. Leitner leads a field which includes eight newcomers. Rich ard Goodman is the only other returner. Richard is also slowed by a recent knee operation. Steve Jones leads the Beet of new divers. Jones, the number two diver is showing great improve ment thus far into the. sea.son. Other divers include Tyke Barhma. John Caffey, Mike Cottingham, Todd Poston, Joe Ray, Tom Tarduogno, and Colby Warren. After seven grueling weeks of practice the Girls Swim Team is now in the process of preparing for the beginning of this season’s meets. Many returning stars from last year’s team provide a good base for this year’s team but lack of good team depth caused by the few number of girls out for the team this year considerably dampened the girls’ hopes of regaining the state crown they lost last to Willington Hoggard. Score A Few More By Billy Tsintzos Well people, it’s that time again, it’s time for me. Mr. Benchwarmer. to bring you another clean, fresh, and pleasant edition of the Benchwarmer. Lately though, it seems that my career as the writer of this article would be threatened. Many of my reports have it that students, players, and even parents were not extremely happy with what 1 have to say. Of course, you know that this is all inside and carefully camouflaged information, and because of this, nothing harmful can happen to the players, also the parents shouldn’t be able to understand what I’m writing in the first place, but if you still think you can stop me, let me just say this...DON’T MESS WITH THE PRESS. So now I’ll just let my good ole trusty pencil cut loose and we’ll see what we end up with. OK...1 knew you would understand. First on my agenda is an experience which happened to me as well as a couple of other fellows I know. It seems that one rainy Sunday we went riding in this guy’s jeep, this trip should never be repeated. The owner and driver of the jeep was someone named.. .Geefcr.. .hea ven help us. Nevertheless, the mere existence of the dreaded drug soon became totally excruciating. The jeep was first to wither away and die. We were then forced to walk out of the dark wooded forest, but still in our midst was the ever-present, mind-expanding.. .Geefcr drug. I'he total trip soon forced our minds into delirium. We finally staggered into civilization, know ing that the drug had ahead\ caused permanent damage to out hrains. With this knowledge, we continued our long homeward trek, with the shadow of death hanging over us, that is, the shadow of Geefcr hanging over us. Finally we made it home, one totally destroyed jeep, four weary and drug damaged travelers,... and one Geefcr. Liitely Frankenstein Cox has been acting quite strange, he seems to enjoy putting his long flowing hair in pins and curlers. I thought this was all in the process of being a teenager until 1 heard him call himsclf---Francis. Now it is just a matter of time, for after basketball season, Francis will fly to California for a change, and bOy I don’t mean weather, as a matter of fact I should have said, GIRL, because Frankie’s new name will be,..Dr. Renee Cox. Spanky Sue entered his name into the 1977 Indianapolis 500 after spectators were awed as his superb handling of his automobile on the dangerous roads of baja Green Valley. It is because of this spectacular display that Spanky will spend the next 2-3 weeks in solitary confinement. Dick “Ca sanova 11" Gilbert is one young man who 1 must talk about. Although Dick is slow on the court he is pretty fast with the girls. On bus trips back from away games, Dick is always attempting to carry on healthy conversations with the young ladies. And recently he’s been going out on hot dates which resulted in his shooting off the rim all week long. Bulletin: Missionary Lee Evans in peril as he drifts down rapids of the Zambezi river...natives attack missionary Lee with poison darts...his whereabouts are prc.sently unknown. Jabbo Harris enjoys himself to the utmost at a joint most of the brothers know as "the crib.” There he performs the acts which have made him famous off the court while on the court he performs acts which made him a famous attraction at the state zoo. Billy Shephard Carpets adver tised John Kobos’ hair as a new example of the sponge look in rugs today. Mark "Rudolf” Yost re.ently gave up his bachelorhood as he announced his engagement to himself. Have fun. Rudy. On road trips to save space, Hugh "Pic” Elkins is bent and folded into an attache case atid placed in the rear of the bus. Later he is extracted, pressed, and ironed out into the worl.l famous physique in which he is known for ----"the human toothpick.” Well, 1 don’t think anyone will get too angry at what I have written in this i.ssue and if they do, tough luck baby. All 1 can say is my pencil has come to a screeching halt, mainly due to the tact that 1 have run out of space, and its finally time to say so long...until next issue this is Mr. B. saying, CHOW!
