Garcia Chavis is Grimsley's hurdler who is undefeated in the hurdles in North Carolina. He holds both school records in the 120 yard High Hurdles 14.0 and the 180 yard Low hurdles 19.5. He ranks no. 1 in the State in the Highs and 5th in the Lows. Garcia placed 2nd in Lynchburg and 3rd in Charlottesville in the Highs. The 880 relay team composed of Charlie Brown, Alvin Thomkins Grady Yourse and Garcia Chavis is currently undefeated in N.C. meets, and it is fast becoming a team with state potential. The team is no. 9 in the state and it has improved every time it ran. Grimsley carries on the mile relay tradition of winners by being third in N.C. The mile relay is composed of Reco Chavis. Charlie Brown, Jay Bennett and Garcia Chavis with a 3:27.7. Mark Sugg is battling with the discus crowd with a best throw of 155-10 which is 4th ranked. He has also thrown the shot 48-11 Vt. Sugg has shown great improve ment in his three years of track. Bobby Bailey is leading the area in the Pole Vault with a vault of 12-6 and is no. 10. He has made much improvement over last year. Sophomore Lewis McCor mick is the newest triple jumper for Grimsley with a leap of 41-4 Vi with Keith Dunnavent and Vernon Green adding depth to both jumps. McCormick has great promise as a triple man and he also does the high jump. 440 runners are junior Jay Bennett, sophomore Weston Whittaker and senior Tony Bailey and McCormick. Bennett is having a good year with a best of 52.5. Whittaker is going to be one of Grimsley’s bright prospects for the future. In his first year ever, Bailey is a fine relayist and is improving with experience. Inconsistent but very good, describes this year’s spring corps who are seniors Charlie Brown, Grady Yourse and sophomore Alviong Thonkins. They have had their good days and to win the conference championship could depend on their doing well. The 880 relay has been plagued by bad handoffs this year, but when the team gets it right it could be deadly. Coach Sawyer is combining his talents with Distance Coach Smith, Weight men Coach Colson and Sprint Coach Woodard to go after the championships. Grimsley will host the City-County Championships on April 29. This is one of the best meets in the State, and it includes all teams in Guilford County. There will be trials in the afternoon and finals at night, and the meet includes other events besides the regular ones. The conference will be held on May 6 and the meet might be held at Grimsley. The Whirlies have a good chance to win the Conference Championship before it moves to the new conference. With the State Championship in sight, Grimsley will host the sectional on May 13 then will go to Hendersonville for the Regional won May 20. This will she IS no. 1 in the area. Martha Alspaugh, a junior, has broken the school record three times this year. She is down to 62.5 for the third best in the prep honor roll. Martha, through her hard work, could be under 60 seconds, a barrier for girl 440 runners. Two new records are under Janis Hall’s feet as she has set both hurdle records of 11.3 in the 80 yard hurdles and 16.0 in the 110 yard lows. She holds down the no. 2 spot in the 80 in the area. Janis placed 7th in the Duimavent scores in long jump. climax with the State Champion ship on May 27 at Cary High School in Cary. Nine new school records this year have been set by a young girl’s team. In the girl’s first out of state competition. Sophomore Ann James took the bronze medal back in the Charlottesville Dogwood Festival. This meet had 50 girl’s teams competing and the girl’s competition was fierce. As the 440 was won in 56.0 by a sophomore and the girl’s mile went down to 4:57. Ann James now holds the school record in the High Jump with a leap of 5-4, and Girls’ Softball Having Perfect Season by Steve Theriot The Girls Sejtball team is off to an impressive start and is a definite threat to win the state championship. The girls sports program at Grimsley has failed to produce a state title since the swimming team relinquished their crown last season. The team has played almost flawless ball in the early season, as shown by their perfect 8-0 record. In the key game of the early season the Whirlies defeated Dudley, the defending state champions, in a close eight InnitTg contest. That final was 5-4. The Dudley game was the only contest in which the outcome was in doubt until the end of play. In most of the teams games the Whirlies were run-away winners, with the outcome decided in the early play. The girls whose play has been the most outstanding and are thereby the starters are Nina Heard, a junior who plays first base, Lynn Gilbert, a senior who plays second base. Sue Rizzo, a senior who plays third base, Chris Gross, a sophomore who plays short stop, Teresa Arnold, a sophomore who plays left field. Shell Spruill, the most valuable player last year as a sophomore is returning at short field, Rita Barrett, a junior who plays center field and also acts as the relief pitcher, Terry Wallace, a junior who is the pitcher, and Sherry Williamson, a senior who is the catcher. Mr. Weaver is the head coach. He is assisted by Miss Tamblyn and Miss Addison. The teams homes games are played at the field at Latham Park. The park is located off of Wendover Avenue at Cridland Street. The Beach Trip Dogwood meet. Distance runners Molly Berry and Carolyn Haines have both set school records. Molly has run the mile in 5:35 and is no. 1 ion the prep honor roll by 20 seconds. Carolyn Haines’ 880 is down to 2:28, a record, and no. 1 also. Kathy Krege is no. 5 in the mile and is a promising sophomore. Sophomores Betsy Walker, Kathy Jackson, Dottie Fulp and Juniors Andrea Oantz and Alspaugh have at different times set the school record, which is down to a 51.8 440 relay. Jackson, Walker, Gantz and Alspaugh have set the 880 relay record with a 1:50.7 for a no. 2 ranking. by Billy Tsintzos Hello everybody, this is your friendly neighborhood Bench- warmer cornin’ at ya with' some more interesting reading, and of course if you didn’t find it interesting then would you please step into the sights of my friendly neighborhood bazooka. Since Easter vacation has recently ended, 1 believe the memories are still fresh in my mind. Therefore this Benchwar- mer will be dedicated to all the Whirlie athletes as well as the plain ole’ folks. By the way, during this past vacation, everyone fought intensely against all obstacles (NO I.D.) to help stimulate more jobs for workers in Milwaukee, if you catch my drift (a la Sroog). In my opinion, if a human body was an automobile, and a stomach was the engine, then on, the day everyone was released, the engine was a tuned-up machine ready to go. But by Sunday, the end of the vacation, it had added an extra 100,000 miles and needed to be overhauled. As I strolled in and around Ocean Drive beach I overheard one group of young men talking about their travels to far off lands. But soon an altercation developed between the individuals in which each demanded that the place they had visited was better than the others. 1 continued to listen to the conversation as it seemed one really enjoyed the heart of Columbias’ climate, while ano ther explained that Jamaica was better for a golden tan. Still another remained patriotic as he argued that being domestic would get someone as good a tan as any other place. Finally the argument ended when one young man calmly explained, “One joint’s as good as another, for a tan, that is.” As I strolled along the beach 1 noticed that the sand was covered with a carpet of wall to wall tin. It was fashionably designed with words of little meaning to me; Sc’niitz. Old Milwaukee. Miller, all quite strange to my innocent eyes. Then I switched scenes and took to the streets. My first sight was that of one of the friendly law officials arresting a young lady for indecent exposure. It seems she had stripped her foot naked which uncovered a sexy mole on her big toe. She soon was fined 20 “bills” which the dedicated officer promptly collected and placed in his pocket for safe keeping, until he could give it to the proper official, of course. Soon afterwards, evening began to roll around, as did the people. I noticed one group playing a tune made famous by the rock group Led Zeppelin. They were all intense during their exciting performance as they played until their heads could take no more. The only thing about it was, they had no instruments. Another group sang a delight ful melody made famous during the freak era of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s called, “Here come the pigs, eat it.” Although to many people, music was most important during this vacation, the speech patterns of the people amazed me the most. 1 listened in to many conversations, as a matter of fact here is one I recall distinctively. First person: Hey man, be cool, there’s enough for everyone. Second person: Yea man that’s cool, but you know man, I just felt like examining it, but if you're gonna be like that man, 1 mean like wow, what a bummer man. First Person: Why don’t you just shut up nerdo! Second Person: Oh man, you’re blowin’ my mind. Third person: Who is this guy? As the night passed and early morning hours arrived 1 found that there were only three types of people; the passed out.the soon to be passed out, and the blind. Although many people had a good time, some didn’t enjoy their vacation as much as they expected to. Perhaps this was because they were always having a hard time of it when they should have kept things nice and soft. But, what can I say, that’s life.
