April 29, 1977 THE HIGH LIFE Page 7 Unknown Golf Team Comes Alive Hodges and Sweeny confer. Disappointing Season by Lisa McDowell This is a rebuilding year for Grimsley’s Varsity Baseball Team. Having only four returning players does not help matters. As of April 21, the record stood at 3 and 5. The production of the team is not up to the expectations of Coach Johnson. Quite a few errors have been made in the games. The first few innings seem to be the toughest for the team. Pitching is causing some problems also. “We’re still fighting it.’’, says Coach Johnson. A relatively new member of the Athletic Depart ment, Ronnie Cox, is assisting the Varsity Baseball Team although he is primarily a football coach. The games this season have received a surprisingly good turn-out, considering the time of day they are held. Coach Johnson is hoping that the night games will attract larger crowds. The last three games are night games, which begin at 7:30. *** Coach Barbour is the coach for the Junior Varsity Baseball Team. His assistant is Tony Baldwin. The team consists of sixteen boys, most of whom are sophomores. Some of the team’s most outstanding players are Kyle Neve, who plays short stop, Stewart Cameron, catcher, and Andre Blount, who plays short stop and right field. Pitching for the team this year is Maurice Jolly. Alan Blake is also a pitcher. Tim Rohan is the top base runner. Interesting Coach Is New Teacher by Sharon Sturdivant Grimsley has just recently gained a new Physical Education teacher. Coach David Dowd. Mr. Dowd attended Page Senior High School. After finishing high school, Mr. Dowd attended Guilford College here in Greensboro where he received a Bachelors of Science degree in physical education. Mr. Dowd has been teaching approximately one year and a half, while finishing up a Masters Degree in Physical Education at A&T State University. Mr. Dowd began working as a Physical Education teacher here at Grimsley on March 28 when he replaced Coach Whitley. He teaches five classes. In the Coach’s spare time he takes advantage of participating in all sports. Coach Dowd works for the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department during the summer. In addition to this he coached a colt league team for Cone Mills this past summer. Coach Dowd enjoys all sports, moreover he enjoys helping students in their learning abilities. Coach Dowd is 23 years of age, and he is married. At the present time he does not have any children but, plans on having a big family in the future. Coach Dowd says he likes Grimsley and enjoys working here. The Coach says the teachers and students are very friendly. Netters Strive for insistency By Gary Sue This year’s Grimsley Tennis Team opened the season with surprising success after an opening defeat. After losing to defending State Champions, Winston Salem Reynolds 6-3, the Whirley netters ripped off 5 straight matches 9-0. The Whirlies victims were Smith, Dudley, North Forsyth, East Forsyth, and Southeast. The Whirlies were then cooled off by Page, and High Point. In the opening match against Reynolds the Grimsley netters dropped all singles matches but came back to win all three doubles matches. Against Dudley, the Whirlies cleaned the Panthers out winning all nine matches and evening their record, 1-1. The story was the same in the next three matches as Grimsley swept them 9-0. - In the Whirlies most recent mat6h they prevailed with an 8-1 victory "over-“North Forsyth. The team swept all the singles matches except one. In doubles our netters took all three and the match. This year’s top six consists of 4 seniors, 1 junior, and 1 sophomore. The seniors are Cliff Abels, Gary Sue, Mark Yost, Mark Trexler. The one junior is George Poulas, and the only sophomore is Dicky Vaughan. The team seems headed for a successful season, and possibly the Conference Championship, and maybe even greater things. by Wayne Earley Does Grimsley High School have a Golf team? Yes, although it is largely unknown, Grimsley does have a golf team, and the making of a very fine one at that. Grimsley does have a very fine chance to win the conference championship. This is decided by taking the total strokes (final scores) from all the matches that Grimsley will play. Put them up against the scores from all the teams in the conference and the team with the lowest total wins. Grimsley now stands number four in the conference, ten strokes behind league leading Greens boro Smith. The individual champion is determined the same way. Take the lowest individual scores from all the matches and the player with the lowest scores win the conference. Mark Tucker now stands 3rd in the conference. Ryan Fox fourth and Larry Spivey is 11th. So with such fine golfers, an interesting conference race shap ing up. How come nobody knows about it? Coach Holly says the biggest reason is “all the matches start around one o'clock, everyone is still in school. Another reason is the matches are so far away, Grimsley’s home course is Bryan The last four conference games are as follows: Tuesday, May 3-North - 4:00 p.m.; Thursday, May 5-Smith - 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, May 10-Central - 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, May 12-Page - 7:30 p.m.; These are the last games of the season. We hope that everyone will come out and support the team. 1977 GRIMSLEY SENIOR HIGH BASEBALL ROSTER Players No. Billy Tsintzos 6 John Hodges 11 Glenn Ford 12 Chuck Fesmire 9 Mark Hardeman 7 Don Dempsey 15 Rod Elkins 1 John Seeeney 16 Ashley Apple 13 Tim Leitner 4 John Rose 3 Andy Strickland 8 Hugh Elkins 2 Tyrone Harshaw 16 Steve Wile 5 William Baynes 10 Park off US 29 North near Brown Summit.
