The faculty of Grimsiey High
School invited the members of
this year’s graduating ciass to the
Senior Tea, which was held on the
evening of Wednesday, May 4,
from five until six o’clock, in the
Alumni House on the campus of
UNC-G.
The large group of students
attending the Senior Tea were
greeted by the faculty and
administration of Grimsiey High
School and several respected
guests from the Administration
Office uptown.
Scholarships Given
Students Receive Awards
As the 1976-77 school year
draws to a close, Grimsiey
students continue to receive
various honors, including scho
larships, invitations to attend
Governor’s School, and invita
tions to attend Boys’ and Girls’
State.
1977-78 Council
Bashar Rizk has been awarded
an Angier B. Duke Scholarship
and Ashok Chopra has received a
J. Welsh Harris Scholarship, both
designed for incoming students at
Duke University.

The fourth annual Womenless
Beauty Pageant was held on May
10th, at 8:00 in the school
auditorium. The beauty pageant
was put on by the senior class as a
fund raising project, in order to
purchase a gift which will be left
to the school.
Joe Freeman, a senior, was
selected the new Mr. “G”, after
competing in the swimsuit,
talent, and question-answer
competitions, he sang the sOng
"rm Changing My Name” and
gave the answer of real to
describe himself and his
personality. The runners-up were
as follows: 1st - Ishmael
Whitfield, 2nd - Alex Mebane,
3rd - Mike Moore and 4th - Bobby
Oaster. The rest of the Grimsiey
males who competed were Robert
Bingham, Joe Crawford, Curtis
Fields, Allen Gillespie, John
Hepler, John Kobos, Billy
Pearlraan, Bob Reeves, Gene
Sanders and Danny Shaver.
The contestants were rated on
their physical fitness, creativity
and uniqueness and also their
poise and beauty by five judges.
These included Mrs. Chapman,
Mrs. Pethel, Mrs. J. Williams,
Mrs. Manahan and Ms. Metzger.
The master of ceremonies was
Caroline Johnson, and the
commentator was Ms. Sroog.
The elections for the Senior and
Junior Council were held on
Thursday, May 5. These people
will be on council for the 1977-78
school year.
Ogden Spruill was voted to hold
the position of the President of
the Student Council. The
following people were voted on
for their positions on the Senior
Council; April McNeil--YRC,
Tammy Murelle - Pep Board,
Tom Tarduogno -- Student
Affairs.
All the students elected for the
Senior Council are new this year
except April McNeil. Tammy
Murelle served on the council in
her sophomore year.
Jane Osborne was elected the
secretary of the Student Council.
The other four council members
are as follows; Junior Class
President - Diane Clark, Student
Affairs - Harlan Frye, Pep Board -
Alicia Neese, and YRC - Kelly
Haines.
Mrs. Lackey is pleased with the
new council members. She
commented that they are willing
to work and are anxious for the
coming year. Each member
seemed pleased with the position
received and Mrs. Lackey said the
choice of the positions went
smoothly. Even though the
members do not know what to
expect of the coming year, they
are ready to take it on.
The student council of 1976-77
finished the year with the prom.
They will keep meeting until the
first week in June.
The elections for the sopho
more council will be in October of.,
the 1977-78 school year. Since
school is starting later next year it
will take longer for the elections
to start. Mrs. Lackey hopes to get
all three quorums together at the
end of October.

English' program offered there.
The Student Personnel Com
mittee of the Greensboro School
Board recognized the following
students for outstanding service
on the Student-School Board
Action Group on May 2, 1977.
Tom Carruthers, Ellen Mitchell,
Beverly Waddell, Gene Sanders,
John Hepler, and Carol Eddy
were awarded certificates.
Robert Poovey, Connye Flo
rance, and Kendall Suh will be
the three students from Grimsiey
spending six weeks this summer
at the Governor’s School at Salem
College in Winston-Salem, North
Carolina.
The Governor’s school, operat
ed by a Board of Governors under
the Department of Public
Instruction of the North Carolina
Board of Education, is for a
selected few gifted and talented
students. Only rising eleventh
and twelfth grade students are
allowed to attend.
Robert Poovey is going for
instrumental music, Connye
Florance is going for dramatics,
and Kendall Suh is going for
academics.
Kendall Suh and Don Dempsey
were chosen ip attend Boy’s State
this summer. Those chosen for
Girls State were Amanda
Stephens, Melissa Stephens,
Beverly Waddell and Laura
Wolfe. This is to be a great
political experience for these
students.
Board Adopts
New Calendar
The Greensboro Board of
Education held a meeting on
Tuesday May 4, and approved a
new school calendar that gives
the teachers two extra work days
during the school year.
The calendar that was first
proposed stated that teachers
would report to school on August
17, and classes would begin
August 30. The teachers
commented that the workdays
were needed more later in the
year, after the students had
begun classes.
The calendar that was
approved on May 5 calls for
teachers to report to the school on
August 19; registration will be on
August 29; classes, August 30;
Holidays will be on September 5,
Labor Day; NCAE meeting on
October 4; November 3 and 4,
teacher work days; Thanksgiving,
November 24-25; Christmas
holiday, December 21 through
January 2; teacher work days on
January 20, 23, and 24 and March
22-23; Easter vacation on March
24, 27 and 28; and, the last
teaching day will be on June 6,
unless make-up days because of
weather are needed.

The annual HIGH LIFE-
WHIRLIGIG picnic was held on
Friday, May 20 at Tanglewood
Park.

Congratulations to Mrs. Donna
(Thompson) Chapman on her
recent marriage to Mr. Fred
Chapman.
With the ending of the 1976-77
school year Grimsiey will lose two
of its very outstanding teachers.
Mrs. Hutton of the Social Studies
Department and Mrs. Phillips of
the Home Economics Department
will be retiring from Grimsley’s
staff. We are very sorry to see
them leave our faculty and will
feel their loss greatly. Best
wishes for the future.
