Varsity Football
The Grimsley Whirlie football
team began the season under the
reigns of new head coach Dr.
Henry Vansant. Coach Vansant
arrived at Grimsley from a
successful program at Fayette
ville Seventy-First. His goals for
the season were to obtain a finish
of above .500 and possibly the
conference championship. Need
less to say, his goals were not
reached.
The Whirlies finished the
campaign with a 4-6 mark as they
were led by Sr. quarterback David
Irvin along with junior sensation,
Glen Ford.
The Whirlies opener was a 7-3
victory over powerful High Point
Andrews who would later become
the 4-A champions. After this
effort the season was a series of
ups and downs as injuries played
a big role, especially in the
quarterback position.
In the battle against arch-rival
Page, it turned out to be no more
than a slight skirmish as the
Pirates thrashed Grimsley 25-7.
Throughout the season, no
matter how badly the Whirlies
played, running back Glen Ford
remained outstanding. Ford
obtained the 1000 yard plateau
with his brilliant speed and
elusiveness as well as obtaining
important help from his excellent
offensive line.
The powerful Whirlie offensive
line was anchored by center Mark
Kronenfeld, who was accom
panied by Russ Walton, Vernon
Greene, Chuck Fesmier, and
massive Mark Sugg. Sugg
received all-city, all-conference,
all-metro as well as all-state and
he also participated in the Shrine
Bowl and during the summer he
will play in the East-West all-star
game.
Girls VoUeyball
Grimsley’s Girl Volleyball team
was the only team in the State to
beat Dudley the state champion.
The Whirlies were tied with
Dudley in the conference for first
with identicalj records. Through
only one team from each
conference could go to the
playoffs. In the playoff game
Dudley edged Grimsley 5-4. 4-5,
5-10, and 5-3 which sent Dudley
on to the State Championship
having only been beaten by
Grimsley.
Seniors Lynne Gilbert and Les
Saleeby will be the only ones
missing from next year's starting
line up which featured Juniors
Martha Alspaugh, Rita Barrett,
Laura Wolfe and Shell Spruill.
Others who could fill positions of
the seniors are Teresa Arnold,
Kris Gross, Nina Heard, Terri
Wallace and Laura Watson.
Coach Addison feels that next
year’s team will be even better
than this year’s and that is
something to-look at. This year’s
team with it’s defeat of Dudley
could realistically be no. 2 in the
State with it’s fine season.
J.V. Basketball
The Grimsley Whirlie Jayvees
coached by Raymond Johnson
adiieved excellence this season
by compiling a 20-3 record along
with the conference champion
ship.
"The Whirlies were led by the
intimidating play of center Jeff
Anderson. Besides scoring
Girls SoftbaU
Domination. This word best
describes the way the girls
softball team overcame all of its
opponents this past season on
their way to a highly impressive
17-0 record and the conference
championship. The two girls who
have been outstanding through
out the season are Terry Wallace
and Rita Barrett. Both girls are
juniors and will welcome
returners next year. In fact, the
team is losing only two players to
graduation. They are Sue Rizzo,,
who plays third base, and Lynne
Gilbert, who plays second.
Terry Wallace is the teams
highly acclaimed pitcher. She has
pitched every one of the games
this season. It has been largely
due to her talent, with strong
support from the hitters, that the
team has been so successful this
season. Her earned run average
is an outstanding 1.536 . Rita
Barrett heads the teams hitters as
well as holding down the center
field position. She has been
batting a sizzling .612 clip. Her
fielding has also been superb.
Her play was especially standing
in teams recent 9-5 victory over
Dudley.
The team will now advance to
the state playoffs.
points, Anderson produced many
a rebound and shot rejection in
leading the Whirlies to the title.
Not quite midway during the
season, super-guard Rod Elkins
was elevated to the varsity but
this did not disgruntle the
Whirlies as they received
excellent support from the rest of
its cast of characters. Kyle Neve
shined as he progressed greatly
as the season went along. Other
members who produced impor
tantly during the assault on the
title were Delany Bush, and
Ronald Miller.
The Whirlies achieved their
success with a fine running game
to go along with a tight defense
which enabled, them to throttle
opponents.
With a fine nucleus remaining
on the varsity team, the help that
these champion jayvees will be
bringing could also give the
varsity what it needs to become a
champion.
Cross Country
Dan Morton, a junior, raced
through the cross-country season
with five course records, and a
2nd place in the State
Championship. Morton in the
State Championship broke the old
course record but still finished
close behind winner Billy Lynch
of Sanderson. On the way to the
State, Dan set the Grimsley,
conference, and sectional records
and he is recognized as the best
distance prospect in North
Carolina in 10 years.
In the team battle, Grimsley
placed 3rd in the Conference
behind State Champ Reynolds
and Page. Out of the 45 teams in
the sectional meet, the Whirlies
placed 4th which was good, but it
did not qualify them for the State.
Cliff Abels, Kent Benfield,
Sophomore Paul Bailey, Scott
Imbus, Gary Hoagland, and
Junior Jay Bennett were the
team’s top runners who finished a
good season. 2nd place was
earned by Grimsley in the J.V.
conference championship as
Sophs Keith Miller and Scott
Toben, Seniors Charlie Brown
and Garcia Chavis, and junior
female Molly Berry who beat
many guys.
Coach Richard Smith organized
the first annual Grimsley
Cross-Country invitational which
was won by Reynolds and it
featured the best teams around
the state. Hopes for next year’s
team will be put on newcomers
who could help Dan and the other
runners.
Swimming
The Grimsley swimming pro
gram was again the superior
power in the state as the boys
team captured their thirteenth
consecutive state title while the
girls team placed fourth in their
competition. Although the boys
team is losing several key
swimmers to graduation the
remaining swimmers provide an
excellent nucleus with which
another championship caliber
team can be molded. The girls
team are also losing several top
competitors but do not have the
depth the boys team has and will
have a hard job replacing the
graduating seniors.
The boys’ were led through out
the season by John Grezeszczak,
Rusty Lambe, and Robert
Bingham. Grezeszczak set state
records in the 100 backstroke and
in the 200 individual medley,
Bingham set a new state record in
100 breaststroke. He also placed
second in the 200 individual
medley. Lambe set a new
standard in the 200 freestyle and
captured the 500 freestyle
championship. The two relay
teams were also outstanding.
"BotnteaiS set new records. The
medley relay team was composed
of John Grezeszczak, Robert
Bingham, Pete Gratale, and Wes
Benbow. The members of the 400
freestyle were Pete Gratale,
Rusty Lambe, Mark Kronenfeld,
and Jim Raines.
The girls who provided the
talent that enabled the team to
finish as successfully as they did
were Teresa Maupin, Beth
Grantham, Carolyn Haines,
Emily Hepler, Kathy Jones, and
Lynn Procton. Teresa Maupin
finished first in the one meter
diving in the state meet.
Girls Tennis
The Girls Tennis Team here at
Grimsley had its season in the
fall. They begin with school and
end sometime in November
following the State Tournaments.
This year’s team finished with the
record at 6-8 for the City
Conference.
There was quite a mixture of
class on the team. Seniors,
juniors, and even sophomores,
made up the team. Some of the
members are: Janice Hall, Karen
Greenberg, Paula Christian,
Elizabeth Staley, Barbara Bartis,
Claire Wilson, Allyson Pentz, and
Kathy Pearlman.
Congratulations to the team
and thanks for their great effort in
the making of the GHS Girls
Tennis Team a good one.
Wrestling
. The Wrestling Team suffered
through a touch rebuild year
during which they delt their first
defeats in six years. The defeat,
which occured about the middle
of the season, stopped the teams
winning steak at 57 games.
Nonetheless, the team finished
with a fine record of 11-4-1. The
team was represented by Scott
Macdonald and Jimmy Bowen in
the state championship meet.
Macdonald, only a junior,
finished third in the state while
Bowen was eliminated in the
quarterfinals.
The team is losing several very
valuable seniors. These wrestlers
are Gary Maynard, Jimmy
Bowen, Clarence Mitchell, Ricky
Buckner, Rodney Mintz. The
outlook for the team is very
promising. The sophomores who
made up the majority of the team
gained very important experience
during the season and they will be
returning next year to lead the
team to better things.
Cont. from pg. 11
The girl’s have wrapped up
their season as the State meet
was won by Western Guilford.
Breaking school records was the
Grimsley girl’s main concern.
Grimsley placed 2nd in the
City-County, conference meet
and spctional behind Dudley.
