First
By Chariie Brawn
Dan Morton has set a new
Grimsley record in the two mile in
9:19 which beats the old record of
9:33. Morton has also run the
mile in 4:23.d and the 800 meters
in 2:01.2. Dan, a Junior, is
running the two mile in the State,
and he will go against Billy Lynch
of Sanderson who has a 9:12 two
mile. Morton is still no. 1 ranked
in the mile.
In head to head competition
Garcia Chavis remains undefeat
ed in the high and low hurdles.
He has beat both hurdlers ahead
of him in the track polls. Garcia
beats the other hurdlers in his
amazing speed at over the last
four hurdles as his start is not the
best.
Distance runners have had a
good year with David Irvin
leading the way. Irvin has clocked
a 4:31 mile, and he has captured
3rd in the City-County and 4th in
the conference. Scott Imbus has
run a 4:42 mile and a 2:04 880.
Gary Hoagland placed 6th in the
conference and has best times of
4:49 and 2:08. Two miler Kent
Benfield has run the grueling
eight lapper in 10:07 Reco Chavis
is Grimsley’s 880 man and has
run 2:04 to lead with Imbus.
440 runners Jay Bennett and
Tony Bailey have best times of
51.4 and 52.0 respectively.
Charlie Brown has run a 22.6 220
this year with Grady Yourse
running a 22.9.
Grimsley’s 880 relay team has
set a new school record of
1:29.59. The team has consistent
ly lowered it’s time. Bests relay
splits are Charlie Brown 22.3,
Lewis McCormick 23.0, Grady
Yourse a super 21.9 and the
fantastic anchorman Garcis Cha
vis with a 21.2. If the team getsit
together and runs there best on
the same day it could shatter the
record. The mile relay team
composed of Bailey, Brown, Reco
Chavis and Bennett hopes to lower
its 3:28 in the Regional track
meet.
In the City-County track meet
first places were recorded by
Garcia in the highs and lows,

Mark Sugg 2nd discus.
Fielders Bobby Bailey, Mark
Sugg, Steve Flynn, Vernon
Green, Lewis McCormick and
Keith Dunnavent have been
having a good year. Bailey has
gotten 13 feet in the Vault to get
back in the Stte rankings. Sugg is
having a fine season in the discus
andis no. 8 in the state.
To get to the State Champion
ship, one must go through the
sectional, regional then state. In
the sectional the top four
advance, while Garcia set a new
sectional record in the 110 meter
High Hurdles of 14.30 as he also
won the 180 lows and anchored
the winning school record 880
relay. Morton set a new record in
the 2 mile of 9:37.3 Sugg placed
2nd in the discus behind State
leading Glen Morris of Western
Guilford. Bobby Bailey won the
Pole Vault in 13-0 and the mile
relay team placed 3rd to qualify
for the Regional meet.
In the state meet. Junior Molly
Berry set new school records in
the mile 5:08 and 880 2:23 as she
gained a 4th in mile and 7th in the
880 behind national record holder
Julia Shea. The 880 relay team
placed 5th in the meet which was
composed of Kathy Jackson,
Andrea Gantz, Betsy Walker and
Martha Alspaugh. Beating the
old record by seconds the mile
relay ran a 4:12 with its members
of Walker. Carolyn Haines,
Kelley Haines and Alspaugh.
Supersoph Ann James jumped
5-4 to place fourth as the Winner
jumped 5-5 only an inch away.

Baseball Season
by Lisa McDowell
All things must come to an end.
Along with the closing of school,
comes the end of the sports
seasons. The ending is not such a
happy one for the GHS Baseball
Team. The final record for the
conference stands at 5-12.
On May 10, the second to the
last game was played. Grimsley’s
boys topped High Point Central
by one run. With the score at 7-3,
and one out, pitcher Glenn Ford
stepped into the game in relief of
Mark Hardeman, and pitched 5
3/5 innings of hitless ball. This
really picked up the game for the
Whirlies. Don Dempsey hit a
triple in the sixth inning, pulling
the score to 7-6. Two more runs
were made, bringing the final
score to 8-7, Grimsley’s victory.
The last game of the conference
was played on May 12 at Jaycee
Park. GHS faced Page and came
away with a beautiful win over the
Pirates, with the final score 7-2.
In the sixth inning, the score,
Grimsley 5, and Page 0, another

sophomores Jackson 11.8 and

Netters
Finish
Second
by Gary Sue
This year’s Grimsley Tennis
Team finished the season with a
10-5 season and a second place
finish in the Conference Tourna
ment. The Whirlie netters second
place finish came as somewhat of
a surprise to many who figured
them to finish as low as fourth.
Just last week the Whirlies
qualified three players for the
State Tournament in Chapel Hill.
Cliff Abels finished off four
straight netters before losing in
the semi-finals, thus qualifying
him for the State Tournament. In
doubles Mark Yost and Gary Sue
qualified for the State Tourna
ment. Overall the Whirlie netters
claimed 11 points to finish in third
place in the Sectionals.
Cliff Abels finished the season
with a 9-4 record in the first flight
division. In the second flight Dicky
Vaughan had a 8-5 record, followed
by Gary Sue who finished the
season with a 10-4 record. In the
fourth flight Mark Trexler had a
8-6 season. George Poulas at the
number five flight finished at
10-4, and at the number six
position Mark Yost finished with
a 11-3 season.
Overall the season was a
pleasant surprise for the Grimsley
netters who did better than
expected, but the Whirlies look
for bigger and better things with
next year’s team.
The Last Time
made a run on an overthrow.
Ashley Apple hit a double and
Billy Tsintzos ran in to make the
score 7-0.
This game showed the
improved pitching skills of the
Grimsley Team. John Hodges
pitched in the seventh inning,
starting off by walking one pirate;
then. Page’s pitcher, Tom
McLaughlin hit a home run which
gave Page their only 2 runs.
Ashley Apple made contact with
the wall when trying to catch
McLaughlin’s long, fly ball.
Having lost to Page earlier in
the season, this was a great
victory for Grimsley. Spirits were
especially aroused because of this
being the last game of the
conference. If the team could
have done as good the whole
season as they did in the last two
games, the record would stand
with many more wins. Hopefully,
next year, the team will get off to
a better start and produce a
terrific season for all us Whirlie
fims.

Hello everybody, this is your
friendly neighborhood Bench-
warmer cornin’ at ya for the very
last tim%. I don’t really know how
to end my career here, as I have
gone through a solid year of
writing only wild junk and
cutdowns. The students are
usually at my throat for some
comment 1 may have printed, and
the teachers are full of criticism
for my not-so-proper grammer.
But what can I say, that’s my bag,
and since this is my final
Benchwarmer, I’m gonna conti
nue with my own style for just one
more time.
Throughout the year 1 have
written about many athletes, but 1
do have my favorites that 1 prefer
to mention more than others.
Mainly because I’m positive they
won’t attack me afterwards...!
hope. Lemme just run few a
couple of them and explain what
made them famous, as well as
their plans for the future.
First-off there is the intelligent
Grady Yourse. Grady, who was an
honorable member of our Hi 10
team, was famous for plucking
the feathers out of an eagle while
the bird was carrying on one of
its’ life functions. As you can
suspect he did have slight
trouble with the bird. Grady will
attend Yale, where afterwards he
will attend Oxford. After his
graduation from these two highly
esteemed schools, he will open a •
fried chicken joint where he may
put his brain to use.
Another famous football star
was Charles Boozle Jones. If
everyone has heard of Punt, Pass,
and kick competion for young
athletes, you must have heard of
the Pour, Mix and Swallow
contests for young delinquents.
Charles will attend Bud and Joes
College where he will study the
science of internal consumption.
After graduation, he will already
have a job, taste testing at Schlitz
brewery, being the most
advanced in his field.
Soccer star Fred De Luca was
Contlnaed from above
record in the 440 and it is now
60.9. The hurdlers have run close
all year with Janis Hall in 16.0 in
the 1 lO’s and 8.8 in the 60 hurdles
while Leslie Groome is 15.9 and
8.9.
Distance are led by Molly Berry
but upcoming sophs with promise
widely known for his quiet,
cooperative, considerate, and
congenial manner of speech. Fred
will bypass college as he has
already talked his way into the
national organization called
SMART MOUTHS of AMERICA.
Continuing on to basketball;
Hugh “Pic" Elkins was widely
known for his feats on the
foothills. After attending SPED
University, he will continue his
mountain climbing career in the
Appalachian Alps.
Gary “the boy” Sue was not
widely known for Chapel Hill, and
1 stop right there. .Gary received a
full academic scholarship to the
U.S. Marines, and afterwards he
will join the secret service
agency, W.H.l.M.P.
Onward to baseball, pitcher
John Hodges was known for his
frequent handling of MICRO. He
really enjoyed it because I can
always hear him and his
brustle-headed buddy singing
about it. Johns’ college career
and life will be ended by the
disease known as marriage.
Discus thrower and shot-putter
Mark Sugg was known for his
highly acclaimed book. How To
Eat A Cow Wlthoot Burping.
Mark will not attend college
because he just can’t seem to
leave the dinner table.
As for swimming, John Gr,
Gre, Grecea, Grea, whatever, 1

demeaning about you, for fear of.
retaliation from your brother. But
I must write about someone else,
someone deadly, someone all life
consuming, someone macabre,
someone called...Geefer. Before 1
end my final Benchwarmer 1 just
want to say Geefer is one cool
dude, 1 wrote more junk about
him than anyone else, but he took
it like a man...sometimes.
Now it’s time to say good-bye.
Its been a blast writing this article
and 1 hope you enjoyed it. So I
presently resign my post as Mr.
Benchwarmer and say my
final...so long.
are Kathy Krege with a 5.57 mile
and 2.39 880 which is good her
first year. Terri Osborne is
another miler in 6:05.
Coaches Lambert, Sawyer,
Smith, Colson and Woodard hope
the combined girl’s and boy’s
track will continue to progress to
State Championship potential.
