Page 6 FRIED LIFE Monday, April 3, 1978 Whirlies Defeat Rocky Mount? By Peach Fuzz Beard This is an investigative report conducted by our sports staff to keep you, the reader, aware of the cloud that shades the 4-A State basketball championship. SATURDAY, MARCH 11-Rocky Mount defeats Grims- ley 81-73. SUNDAY, MARCH 12-Our staff discovers a defect in the scoreboard. It was giving Grim- sley the points that Rocky Mount scored. Thus allowed Rocky Mount to obtain the points that the Whirlies scored and win the championship. But after proof of the faculty scoring system we demanded a decision by the school board. MONDAY, MARCH 13-(5:30 am) It was announced that Grim- sley were the champions. A committee made up of 12 Grim- sley alumnist and 3 Rocky Mount alumnists voted in favor of Grim-, sley by a score of 11-4. The former Whirlie that voted against Grimsley was burned at the stake. TUESDAY, MARCH 14-(10:30 am) It was discovered that Amp Long was ill and could not make it to the finals Saturday. It is believed that Robert McAdoo, distant relative of Long, disguised himself as Long and the New York Knicks star scored the points previously awarded to Long. TUESDAY, MARCH 14-(4:00 pm) Grimsley has been disquali fied and the special committee awarded the championship to Rocky Mount. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15-A complaint was filed by our staff and after several hours of arguing by both school representatives, it was discovered that Rocky Mount allegedly caused the defect in the scoring system and kid napped Long the night of the finals. Amp was approached by an attractive young lady and was lured into captivity at her apartment and was not released until the next morning. But that was not to be the end of the story. After long didn’t show up for practice Saturday, several of his team mates con tacted Robert McAdoo and talked him into taking Amp’s place. The Whirlie team mates vows that Nixon-1 mean Weaver had noth ing to do with the scandal. The board disqualified both teams and another match up was set up to For the student who wants to excel in social studies. THURSDAY, MARCH 16- Grimsley, led by Eric Summers with 53 points, and Steve Ratliff’s 42 points and 29 rebounds, de feated the Rocky Mount team and claimed an apparent champion ship. FRIDAY, MARCH 17-A com plaint was filed by the Rocky Mount Staff and another game is set. Rocky Mount wins the ball game-but the board decides to let the championship be decided by the results of a series. The best of three would decide the title. Sc with the series tied at one game apiece, Grimsley is leading by one point as the buzzer sounds. An exuberant Coach Weaver grabs a ball from an official and dunks it at the Whirlie end of the court. Much to the dismay of the Grimsley fans, and to the delight of the Rocky Mount fans, a technical foul was called. The Rocky Mount player sank a free throw and the game was tied at 87 all as Rocky Mount took the ball out of bounds. The pass comes in and a Rocky Mount player executes a prefect hook shot. The ball goes through the nets — and Coach Weaver goes through the floor. Rocky Mount wins the ball and the “Them of Rocky’’ is played by the Rocky Mount band. SATURDAY, MARCH 18 - Once again a complaint is filed by our staff, but the final board decision reads; “Soskovice had every right to call the technical foul because a referee’s authority does not end until he approves the final score. I’m sorry but the decision must hold. That’s life.” Members of the comiittee were not available for comments on the decision - no one could be found. Fifteen unmarked graves were found — but that’s another story for another time. This characteristic keeps David from playing to his full extent. Girls in the stands kept leaping from the stands when he ran by thus causing many techni cal fouls for the team and plenty of dates for David. This article is not intended to offend any player. Complaints can be made to the sports editor, (who is a sophomore), because it was his idea for his list of awards.
