Friday, April 28, 1978 HIGH LIFE Paj-e 7 Boys On The Move by Cindy Caveness The Boy’s Tennis Team is off to a good start this year with an 8-1 record. They are undefeated in the conference. Coach Hickey thinks the team has a good shot for the sectionals. He is not sure about the state tournament since there are two games between the regionals and the state. Out of the six top players, three are undefeated. The other three have lost only one match. The top six are as follows: (ranked in order) 1) Richard Vaughan 7-2, 2) George Poulos 9-0, 3) Danny Vaughan 7-0, 4) Fred Highfill 8-0, 5) Greg Parker 8-1, 6) Bill Leonard 7-1. All the team doubles are unde feated are as follows: (ranked in order) Richard Vaughan and Fred Highfill, 2) Danny Vaughan and George Poulos, 3) Greg Parker and Bill Leonard. The rest o'' the top fifteen are as follows: (not in any order) Tom Baily, Tom Hugbee, Pat Carmo- dy, John C andler Scot Hoge- wood, Lee Patterson, Andy Phelps, Scott Toben and Doug Schuster. The team plays Burlington tomorrow morning, 10:30 at home. The Conference Tourna ment will be held next week. May 4 and 5 at Tanglewood. The team plays Page on May second at home and May 8 away. The team would appreciate the students support. After the two Page games Grimsley will have a shot for the sectionals. May 10 and 11 in Greensboro, depending on their record. Active young tennis players demonstrate talents. by Kevin Dickey Grimsley’s golf team is well or its way to a state championship title. Four seniors: Mark Tucker Larry Spivey, Kevin Dickey, and Tommy Arthur, have returned from last year’s team which very nearly took the state crown. Twc sophomores, John Inman and Mike Dermatas, have brought the team added strength. Coach Holley’s team, which won its first match of the year by 28 strokes, has compiled a record of 4-0 thus far in the season. John Inman (brother of touring profes sional Joe) occupies the number one spot on the team with a stroke average of 75. GIRLS SATISFIED WITH SEASON by Lisa McDowell With the season nearing its end, the GHS softball team is happy with their stand. As of now their record for the conference stands at 9-1 . They have only three more games to play. The game having the most effect on the team was played the 26th against Dudley. Terri Wallace is the pitcher for the team and is thought of by many to be the best around. She has good control of the ball; keeping it high in order to make judgement of its fall more diffi cult. This is Terri’s third year playing softball. Next year she will be attending North Carolina State and will participate on the Volleyball Team there. Rita Barrett takes the cake as far as batting goes; hitting 680 so far this season. A good hitter is one who hits around 400. Rita has had nine homeruns in nine games. She has been intentional photo by McEachem ( KOMi JIOtSB 3 & c3uice'Lar>^ Iasifts, juices lunch specials^ salads^ sandwiches, vcgetaKar^ delights^ beer appetizers, combination plates, fried n'ce, egg fu. y u.ngj cfow house Specials and druiSre.n speca/S • 337 Tate Opc-n; |:30-9PM MONPAy THRU THUZSDAy ii:30-/0PM fripay ano saturoaV ly walked approximately nine times also. Rita will be going to UNC at Charlotte next year. Playing first base is Nina Heard, who has hit over 370 and Kris Gross, short stop, hitting over 433. Shell Spruill has been playing outfield for three years. Sherry Williamson has also been playing for three years as catcher. She is one of the most improved players on the team. Taking care of second base, are Julie Vernon and Sharon Cherry. It is said that the team that wins the close ones is a very good team and this certainly holds true of the girls’ team. So far they have won three games by just one run. The girls have yet to lose a conference game but they need to work a little bit more on their defense. They seem to be a bit careless in that aspect but they definitely make up for it with their hits and games. There arc a few people on the team who arc hitting less man last year which has had an effect on the team’s batting average. Last year they averaged sixteen while this year it is down to ten. This change has not done any great damage to the team as far as winning goes. The Whirlies are expected to win the games neces sary to go to the all-state playoffs. The only worry was the Dudley game. The only loss was to Graham. The girls later came back and beat them 13-4. Thanks is extended to Assistant Coach Eddie Jones and also to Tammy Murclle for tending to the announcements pertaining to the games. the GUITAR SHOP 332^Tate Street; Greensboro, N.C. j *7403 275-r>oi:i y ]Sernard ^ItepKerd FRIENDLY SHOWING CENTER GREENSBORO.
