Friday, April 28, 1978 HIGH LIFE Page 9 Jeep Racing [cent, from p. 4] excellent driver sponsored by Miller Brewery. His Cherokee with a 401 came roaring up to the line. The crowd stood on top of their chairs, coolers, and garbage cans to see this man in action. Joel literally bounced up and down the hill. He flew some twenty feet over a jump and around the last curve. He crossed the finish line at 50.8 seconds, the fastest time before him had been 53.7 seconds. There were only a couple of vehicles who didn’t make it up the hill, but there were a few who came down it crooked and landed in some trees. One guy rolled his Bronco over and into the specta tors, but no one was injured. Then they called ray class. The six of us staged up. 1 was the last to run. The first two girls got stuck on the hill. I put on my lap-belt and shoulder harness. I watched the third girl take off, I was expecting to see her come across the finish tine, but she didn’t. Sam Pistone came up and told me that she hit a tree, but she was all right. Damn, that’s all I need before I run. The next two finished with decent times, 1:08-2 and 1:01:7. My turn. 1 coasted up to the starting line and took off with the green flag. My gosh-the creek was cold. Yahoo, and up the hill. I topped the hill at 23 seconds and got to the second creek by 30. The second 1 hit it, the jeep stalled. After all the time I spent water proofing it, it took water in the carburetor. I threw up my hands in disgust and defeat. I took off my helmet and heard 11,000 people yelling “Run, Ann run,” So I ran through the mud holes and across the finish line at 1:30:1.1 had won third place but I felt like crying. Sam came up and put his arms around me. “Guess what, you had fastest time of the day going until it cut off on you. ’ ’ Mary Pat came up and said “that damn jeep.” I had to laugh. They called A class up to the line. They were the modified eight cylinders the last person to run was Charlie Profitt and Joel Byrd still had the fastest time. Charlie was out for the waist-high Top Eliminator trophy, not to mention the $250 that went with it. Charlie didn’t disappoint his fans, he turned a 47.9. The race was over. The specta tors left satisfied. The racers loaded the trailers looking either frustrated or contented. For a weekend, time has stood still. We made new friends and renewed old ones. Some left winners, others left losers, but in two weeks they all will return to another race-with even more de termination. English To Stress Basics Grimsley’s English Depart ment unanimously decided to place more emphasis on reading and writing skills in their curricu lum next year, say Mrs. Hoffler and Mrs. Yourse, co-chairmen of the English Department at Grims- ley. In order to do this, the Grims- ley English Department has se lected courses for next year’s curriculum which deal with tne basic reading and writing skills. The courses selected for next year will help the Grimsley student in acquiring basic skills in composi tion and reading. These courses will help all students overcome many of their problems dealing with English and will also enable students to become more profici ent in taking the competency tests For over five years many students and parents have wan ted Grimsley’s English Depart ment to offer courses which concentrate on basic English skills. As Mrs. Hoffler says, the emphasis by the department was “based on parent and student request and on the state compe tency tests.” Concert Dedicated To Master The Grimsley Symphony Band will present a concert dedicated to Mr. Hazelman’s retirement. The concert is going to be held in May in the auditorium at Grimsley. The band is selling candy to raise money for a present to give to Mr. Hazelman for his 42 years of service. The gift is to be presented the night of the con cert. A date is not definite at the time, but already the music department expects a full house the night of the concert. A guest conductor, Paul Yoder, will be present to direct the band on a piece he has written. The Symphony and the Concert Bands, invites the student body to attend this concert and show their appreciation to Mr. Hazelman. A reception will be held after wards in the school cafeteria. Passover Arrives Beginning on April 22, people of the Jewish faith will observe Passover. Passover is the Jewish feast to commemorate the sparing of the Israelite first-bom. The pharoah of Egypt had ordered his men to kill the first-born of every Israeli family. Moses was then instructed to pore lamb’s blood over the door. The Angel of Death then killed all first-born in the households which had not poured blood over their doors. pa. great • ^erando, the DANNON VOeORT STORE inviteo youtoaquicfcsalad and aftcrschod snack! The first celebration of Pass- over was on the eve of the departure of the Israelites from Egypt. A second celebration in the second year after is recorded in the ninth chapter of the book of Numbers. The celebration of the Passover by the orthodox Jew does not differ materially from the Passover as it was celebrated by Jesus, his disciples, and the Jews before his day. The Grimsley High IQ Bowl team was thwarted in its efforts to claim the High IQ Bowl Champi onship April 5 by a determined team from Williams High School in Burlington. The Bulldogs of Williams, led by Captain Jay Hudson and team member Matt Maggio, outscored the Whirlies 189-99 in two ten minute halves of play to take home the prestigious trophy. The members of the winning team each received $200 scholar ships from NCNB for their efforts. The Whirlies, consisting of team captain Kendall Suh, Carol Grol- nick. Page McAdams, Jon Zim merman, and alternate Grady Shields were granted $100 scho larships from NCNB for their performances. The Grimsley team, ranked number one after the 40-team elimination round Super Satur day, February 11, never got their brains clicking as a quick and ready Williams team jumped off to an early lead. McAdams, Grolnick, and Zim merman began answering questi ons and bonuses and pulled the Whirlies within reach of the lead. However, second-ranked Wil liams had total control of the first half, finishing the period with a 99-69 score. The second half saw Burlington Williams’ lead never seriously challenged as the Bulldogs raced to a 189-89 advantage. The Grim sley team answered the last toss-up of the game to bring about the final score of the game, 189-99. NCNB representative Sam Sloan presented the teams with their respective scholarship mo ney. GYC High IQ Bowl chairman Paul Davis presented Kendall Suh with the runners-up plaque and Hudson with the large win ners’ trophy.
