lliimday, May 25, 1975 HIGH LIFE Page 5 Morton, Berry Key Victories Track Team by Hank Howard The 1977-78 Grimsley Track season draws rapidly to a close as the State Meet for the boys approaches on May 26. Both girls and boys teams have experienced outstanding seasons despite the fact that many gifted track and field athletes have gone on to successful college track careers. Record-breaking times in the running events this year include a 9:05.7 two-mile run by Dan Morton (breaking all N.C. school records and the state record by 8 seconds), a 4:18 Grimsley school record-breaking mile by Dan Morton, an 11:50 record-breaking girls two-mile by Mollie Berry, and a 4:17.5 girls Mile relay record. In the field events Steve Flinn registers a noted distance of 163’-3” in the discus, while Bobby Bailey has lept a notewor thy 13’-3” in the pole vault. The GHS boys Track Team recently finished eighth in the rain-tormented Sectional Meet consisting of 21 teams. The Whirlies with 15 points finished behind Dudley (42), Western Guilford (26), Parkland (24), North Forsyth (22), Burlington Cummings ( ), Winston-Salem Reynolds (17), and Page (16). Only top qualifiers ran in this highly selective meet where the top form advance to the Region- als. Despite the torrential rains the meet ran on in to the wet Friday evening with Steve Flinn finishing third in the shot put with 145’-7”, Bobby Bailey jumping 12’-6” in the pole vault (despite the fact that he borrowed a pole to replace his which broke during the competition), Dan Morton finishing first in the two-mile run with a time of 9:18.9 (New Meet Record), and the GHS Mile relay team (Bennett, McAdoo, Young, Whitaker) finishing in 3:27.8. The girls Sectionals held one week earlier, Friday, May 5, were won by Western Guilford. But Grimsley’s girls managed to se cure fifth place with a score of 16*/2, only V2 point behind fourth- ranked Ragsdale, IV) points be hind 3rd-placed Eastern Guilford, and six points behind the Dudley Panthers who came in second. Of the 24 teams present at the Dudley-located meet, Grimsley’s Martha Alspaugh finished third in the 440 yard dash with a 1:01.3 time, Mollie Berry and Kathy Krege finished first and third in the two-mile run with best times of 12:08 and 13:25, respectively, and the mile relay team crossed the line second with a best time of 4:17.1. The top four runners in , * . .. I Girl Is Ends On A High hbo Addict each event qualified for the Regional Meet at Icard, May 12 where Alspaugh, Berry, and . Kregeset down their personal best times. The girls also finished third in their conference of seven teams with Dudley on top. Here again. Berry, Krege, and Alspaugh led the score as Mollie took the mile and 880, Kathy the two mile, and Martha the 440. Mollie Berry now has her leading two-mile time down to 11:50 (second in the Western Regionals), a time many male two-milers can easily relate to. Meanwhile, N.C. State-bound Dan Morton continues to domi nate the headlines, “Morton Lea der in Mile, Two Mile.” Accor ding to the Greensboro Daily News “The only double-leader (in N.C.) is veteran Greensboro Grimsley runner Dan Morton who has the state’s best times in the mile and two-mile runs.” And those are the facts. Dan now aspires to a breaking of his own record into the sub-9 minute range by May 26. Inclement weather has certain ly been a deterring factor in this year’s GHS Tack Meet Schedule. The Girls Sectionals were can celled after qualifying times had already begun, and the 13th annual Guilford County Track Meet was postponed twice April 26 and finally held on May 16. Preliminaries were at 10 a.m., field events at 2 p.m. and the running finals began at 7 o.m. Oh teachers! Please forgive me. I have a good reason as to why my French isn’t translated and why my algebra’s not com pleted. Can 1 help it if I’m an HBO ADDICT?!!! It first struck me on May 4, when those wonderful CENSOR LESS, commercialless movies and shows began pouring over the air waves and into my television.
