Student Profile:
If you ever recall seeing Grims-
ley senior Joe Franks with a
Grimsley athletic team and
thought that he was a waterboy or
ankle taper, you’ve never been
so far from the truth in your life.
Joe Franks’ professional title is
medical trainer and basically
what he does is prevent and care
for injuries 'and players. He
accepted a scholarship from
Clemson and will join their twelve
person staff. But in addition to
caring for injuries, he also de
votes about 20-21 hours a week to
this art. Now you’re probably
thinking what can this guy do that
anyone else cannot. Franks was a
manger at Kiser when he was
invited by Bob Maye, faculty
trainer at GHS, to attend the
All-Star Qinic held here in
Greensboro in 1975. “The job is
great and the people you meet are
unreal,’’ vows Franks who has.

Joe Franks
because of his training, made
friends all over the state. He
would like to graduate from
Clemson then become an assist
ant at a college while working on
his masters degree.
“Football is the toughest sport
to prepare for because there is so
much to do,” implies Franks. At
2:30 he gets out of class and gets
ice, prepares six ice bags so if an
injury occurs there will be an ice
pack ready. AT 3:30 he leaves
with the team for their pre-game
meal where he distributes salt
tablets. Around 4:15 he returns to
separate uniforms and a half hour
later works on the pre-game
taping. Fifteen minutes later he
sets up the sidelines. This task
takes about 45 minutes then it’s
more taping. At halftime he takes
care of minor injuries that oc
curred in the first half.
After the game is over, he
cleans up the dressing room puts
everthing away. He get home at
abot 11:15 so all in all he puts in
about eight hours into one foot
ball game. And away games are
even tougher because he has to
take all of his equipment on the
road with him.
Franks gave us four things that
separates Grimsley’s sports
medical staff from any other in
the state. (1) Good staff (2)
Qualified faculty trainers and
three certified medical tech
nicians and competent student
trainers. (3) team doctor (4)
Highly qualified female trainer in
Linda McCaskill.
Any other students interested
in this type of work should get in
touch with Bob May through
Coach Sawyer.
The “Legend of Joe Franks” is
moving on to Clemson, and in a
final statement to the Whirlie
coaches, Franks said, “I owe
everything to the Grimsley Ath
letic staff and players.” The
Whirlie Coaches and players also
owe a lot to “Smokin’” Joe-and it
has been made clear that he will
be missed next year.

Tm sure that many of you have
loticed that we have a new name
inder the title BENCH
WARMER. You have no idea how
nuch this depresses me. I was
lever as great a athlete as Roger
staubach, David Thompson, or
ieggie Jackson, but still I see no
•eason for these people to put my
lame under BENCH WARMER,
h a baseball dugout no one can
iee that I warm the bench, so why
mbarrass me like this? Well, 1
>uess I may as well finish making
complete fool out of myself.
Since I have been sentenced, I
mean selected to write this great
:olumn, I may as well let you folks
enow what I think a bench
warmer is. Now, everyone has a
Jifferent idea of what a bench
warmer is, and I’m sure that my
k'iew of bench warming may differ
with the view of Lisa McDowell,
the former writer of this column.
One might think that a bench
warmer is not a player - but
someone that wants a good view
if the game and assumes the title
if scorer, trainer, batboy (or girl),
waterboy, or manager. But since I
have had many of those titles I
think that view is wrong. 1 asked
this one girl what she thought a
bench warmer was and she said it
was a person that brings heaters
to ball games so that football
players woumn t get cold.
That’s close but not quite there
yet. On television, a bench warm-
er is one that wasn’t good enough
for the team, but makes
because his dad either owns the
team or is the coach. In the
story’s end, the boy wins the
championship for the team and
falls in love with the head
cheerleader and lives happily
ever after.
Well, I’ll let you ponder around
with the idea while I explore the
many fields of bench warming.
Everytime Grimsley has a Vars
ity baseball game, and the oppos
ing pitcher is being “rocked”
(several hits or runs off of), Joe
Franks, a piece of tape soiled with
red clay. But Franks holds this
rag out in front of him and
screams to the pitcher “RAG-
ARMI” “HEY, THIS IS YOUR
ARM! FACE!” Interesting, isn’t
it?
Franks is not so bad though. He
takes money from his own pocket
and keeps the baseball team in
supply with punch. It has been
rumored however that at times
someone has spiked the game
punch. Have you ever tried to hit
a baseball while your head is
spinning? Take it from one who
always batted as though his head
was spinning, it’s not an easy
task.
Finally, I’ve decided to let you
know what a bench wanner is
Here is the definition. Bench-
warm-er) n. the article
you’ve just read.
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE BEST KIND
GKS rallied to score three
runs in the top of the final inning
and Billy Livingston, in relief of
Willie Baynes, picked up his
second win against Page as the
Whirlies won their 15 straight ball
game.
Down 4-2 in the top of the
seventh Billy Livingston singled
to score start things for Grimsley
after one out. Chuck Fesmire
followed with a single that ad
vanced Livingston to second. Mel
Melton couldn’t handle Don
Dempsey’s hit at second as
Livingston scored. After a strike
out recorded by Page ace Tom
McLaughlin, Maurice Jolly singl
ed after a steal by Dempsey
scoring he and Fesmire as Grims
ley pulled down another close
victory.

Whirlies Keep
Win Streak Alive
by Wayne Early
The Grimsley JV baseball team
is off to a very successful second
month with four victories plus a
narrow loss to Western Guilford.
In games played the last month of
the season, (games played late
April to early May), Grimsley has
held a bid hedge mostly because
of solid all around play.
The season, (second month)
looks almost the same as the first.
The whirlies accurate defense
was held most opponents down,
even the loss to Western, Grim
sley allowed only four runs.
The offense continues to gene
rate, with the only exception
being the three run game against
the Hornets, same as in the last
month, when Grimsley could
manage only two runs in the Page
game.
Grimsley which has four games
remaining has still a chance to
finish 12-2 overall. As it said
before we are in no conference so
our record only consists for
personal pride. Page being the
only other team in the city with a
JV. So all our wins or losses will
be for nothing.
Whirlie
Booters
Boost Record
In its first year of existence, the
GHS Girls soccer team has had a
season they can be proud of. Rain
or shine the lady booters booted
their way to the championship of
the Senior High Girls division of
the City Soccer League.
Leading up to their tremendous
finish, the girls defeated the
Pumas 6-0. Kathy Kelley and
Martha Hughes had two goals
each in the Whirlie win. Amanda
Stang and Kelly Haines also had
goals in the victory.
In a make-up game with Page,
Grimsley leveled their record by
shutting out the Pirates 1-0.
Colleen Baldwin set-up Kelly
Haines for the game’s only score.
The Whirlies scored in the first
period and held off a Pirate rally
for the final three periods.
Kelly Haines scored her third
goal in as many contests, but in
this case it wasn’t enough as
Grimsley was upset by the Angels
2-1.
, The play-offs began and Grims
ley, at the end of the regulation
period was involved in a scoreless
tie. They went into two five
minute overtimes which produced
still a scoreless deadlock. The
Unified Tigers and Grimsley Ti
gers then moved into a penalty
kick period due to the deadlock.
In this period the best players are
picked to participate. In the first
kick, Shaun Carter scored the first
point of the evening. June
Thomas missed on their opportu
nity. After another round of
misses by both teams, Kelly
Haines scored and Grimsley
waltzed away with one of the most
exciting games of the season.
Due to rain-outs, we wouldn’t
get the results of the champion
ship in time to go into this edition
of the paper. But we’re sure the
girls will give it “a hundred
oercent” effort.
