Page Four High Life March 11, 1949 in^ viQUee Or MURTiSY^ ^ Greensboro Loses to High Point by 35-29 Sports Parade By GORDON BATTLE It is too bad that the Student body and the teams cannot eonsis- tantly show the spirit displayed at the High Point game. IF the basketball team had played all its game as well as it did this one it would have Jiad a much more im pressive record. If the student body showed the spirit it displayed at the High Point game in other things, Greensboro High would rapidly build up the reputation of having the best school spirit in the state instead of the reputation of having a student body that doesn’t like anything it has, and shows its dislike by mob methods. We were surprised that the students didn’t strike and not come to the game, or at least not cheer when they got there. Wouldn’t it have been amusing if the team had gone on strike and refused to play the game because they were afraid they might get beat? Apparently everyone forgot their grudge, how ever, and came to the game with the intention of playing the best they could, or of showing their best manners. Greensboro doesn’t like to let High Point think they have a better school than Greensboro does, and was out to show the visitors what good school spirit Greensboro has. It was a very im pressive show. Let’s hope it can be carried over to the other things as well. NOT MANY SENIORS Perhaps the outstanding thing kins, Johnny Scott, Tommy Ward, and Tom Truelove are seniors, so you see the Whirlies should be great ly improved next year. If they can consistanitly play the type of ball which they did on occasions this year they will be a real power in the conference. This spring weather toms the mind to baseball. Mr. Johnson is going to coach the team this year, and he will need all the support he can get from the student body. Last year the turnout at the baseball games was very poor. Let’s all get behind this year’s nine and see to it that they don’t ever play in an empty park in Greensboro. By the way there’s a fellow in school who may turn out to be a real cracker- jack second baseman. He played first string for George Washington High School of New York, a school of five thousand, last year. His name is Admandio Alexiou. r T- I A O',, jps -ty Shown above are the members of the WTiirlie swimming team which meets Raleigh at the local Y pool tonight. Greensboro finished in a tie for fifth place in the eighth club league behind High Point, Charlotte, Burlington, and Winston-Salem, and tied with Asheville. In a home game last Friday Greensboro High School’s Whirlies put on terrific battle against High Point’s tall, cool, experienced Bisons before succumbing in the final two minutes of play, 35-29. The Whirlies had victory within their grasp when with only two minutes remaining they were tied at 2f)-29. But High Point, truly the number one team in the conference, pulled away once and for all to crush Greensboro’s hopes of bring ing a not to good season to a close with a victory over their ancient rivals from the furniture city. Victory seemed so close when Greensboro led 9-1 late in the first quarter, were tied 16-16 at the half, and again at 29-29 with two min utes to play. But how far away it seems now! In a way it was a moral victory for the Whirlies, however. For of the seven hundi'ed odd spectators, few if any expected the lads in purple to make a game out of it Fresh in their minds was the crush ing 47-29 defeat administered the Whirlies the preceeding Tuesday by Burlington’s Bulldogs. But the Whirlies did make a game of it, They played the favored bisons off their feet in the early minutes of the game and took a 9-1 lead on shots by Lindy Brown, Doug Kincaid, and Bill Campbell. They played the tall lads from.. High Point on equal terms from then until the final disastrous tw’O minutes. Greensboro wull not go to the state tournament. Burlington took care of that. But the Whirlies can aways look back to this High Point game with pride for they played a great, inspired game that fell only six i>oints short of victory. The entire high school can well be proud of them.
