Page Eight High Life October 20, 1950 Greene Installed As Sophomore President COUNCIL COMMITTEEMEN GIVE REPORTS Seven Sophomore Representalives Elecled fo Office for Present Year Duing a regular assembly, Tues day, October 10, Bill Greene was given the oath of office as the new ly elected president of the sopho more class, by Jerry Bryan, presi dent of the student body. After the installation of the soph omore president, Peggy Welch was recognized as secretary of the soph omore cabinet, and George Fergu- son as vice-president, and treas urer, Rooney Boone. Seven Representatives Elected The seven new sophomore rep resentatives to the student council are: Bob Bell, Ann Carlson, Dottie Crews, Bobbie Holler, PaL^Joyce, Joyce Lee, and Chris Velonis. The number of sophomore representa tives elected was based on oiie rep resentative for every seventy-five students. The president and the seven rep resentatives will become members of the student council. The other three class officers will be mem bers of the sophomore cabinet. Bill Greene is the past president of Lindley Junior High School. Running against him for the office of sophomore president was Eddie Yost, past president of Central Jun ior High School. Both have receiv ed the Clvitan Award for Citizen ship. In competition with Peggy Welch as sophomore class secre tary were John Edwards and Julia Ann Hollowel. Frances Hosle, Pat Apple, and John Osborne ran against George Ferguson as vice- presient. Jimmie Armstrong ran for treasurer with Rooney Boone. Election Held October 3 Polls were opened from 8:15 to 8:45, during fourth and fifth lunch periods, and for fifteen minutes after school for the sophomores to vote. Over 69 per cent of the sopho more class registered and 84 per cent of the registered voters voted. This year’s voting'was not as good as the voting of last years when 90 per cent of those register ed voted. Councilmen Give Reports After the installation of the sophomore officers, Anne Wrenn, student council secretary, gave the secretary’s report followed by Jim my Bett’s report on the finances. Reporting on duties of the welcome committee which is mainly the reception of guests. Elizabeth McPheeters spoke for herself and Bill Michael as co- chairmen of the recreation commit tee. She related their future plans for a council party in honor of the new council members, the Chirst- mas dance, the annual square dance given by the council, the spring council party, and the prom. Connie Mack Butler gave the duties of the archives and publicity committee. Eli Attayek and Lane McGregor are also on this commit tee. Marie Sizemore gave a report of the inter-school relations work, and Nancy Beeson brought up to date the details of the constitution committee. The Greensboro Senior High Constitution will be revised as deemed necessary. Other Reports Given Betty Jo Benfifeld, vice-president, who is in charge of all the assembly programs, requested that all stu dents inform her of their prefer ences for the future assemblies. President of the Junior class, Bobby Clark, reminded the stu dents and teachers of Clean-up day, October 11. The duties of the traffic squad are to help all stu dents to and from classes quickly, was reported by Bill Sartin, chief of the traffic squad. Henrietta Bell and Jimmy Betts revealed to the student body plans for Social Standards day, which will be held this year on November 16. As in past years, there will be no regular classes on this day. The purpose of this Social Standards day is to further interest in some chosen field. There will be separ ate classes of the students choice and assemblies with guest speakers. A student-faculty softball game will be held during the lunch periods. Sophomore officers for this year are, left to right, Rooney Boone treasurer; Peggy Welch, secretary; Bill Greene, president; and George Ferguson, vice-president. High Life nominates as the most patriotic G.H.S.’er, MIKE FLOYD. In a recent History class (301), Mike stood at full attention after he had heard faint strains of “The Star Spangled Banner” coming from the radio room.
