The Sports Corner
By Fritz Apple
When High Point invades Guil
ford College tonight, they will find
a larger court than the small school
gym where the two teams met
for the last game. This should ex
cite a different type of playing
with Greensboro very much at
home on a large court.
Tournament plans for the State
Basketball Championship have
been announced for the days of
February 25-27. The top four teams
in both the Eastern and Western
Conferences will meet in Winston-
Salem for this annual contest. The
top team in the Western Confer
ence will face the fourth place
team of the Eastern Conference
and vice-versa. This year the coach
es have decided on dropping the
elimination situation. Although ?
team may lose its first game, they
still will continue playing even
though they cannot win the crown.
The team that wins the crown will
have to win the four games that
they play.
At present the Whirlies are gal
loping towaird their first state
crown since 1945. After the stellar
performance against Gastonia,
Coach Jamieson remarked, “It was
the best played game of the year;
the boys were poised, and they
really wanted to win.”
In the Eastern Conference,
Rocky Mount has sewn up the
Eastern Championship and shoub
be the team to beat for the state
title. They are receiving invalua
ble help from a former GHS’er.
Billy Proctor, who is one of their
starters.
Great school spirit has been dis
played at the basketball games,
and the heckling of the referees
hasn’t been as severe as in the
earlier part of the season; the
.same referees, just a better spirit.
Many praises go to Dave Scur-
lock and Wayne Wyrick for playing
in the High Point game even
though they were disabled. Dave
played while he had a temperature
of 101 degrees, and Wayne suffered
a wrenched knee. They both will
play tonight.
With the new gym going pp, it
seems a shame that they couldn’t
add a swimming pool. The Whirlie
swimmers have a terrific schedule
with the local Y. M. C. A. for the
use of their pool. It is very incon
venient for the swimmers to race
to the “Y” every day for their
daily work-outs.
Two Mat Wins Added
To Whirlwind Record
Senior High’s wrestlers have
chalked up two more victories
against Danville and Statesville to
add to their string of five 'wins.
Gene Barbour and Ronald Sams
highlighted the 18-12 win over the
Statesville mat men here Thursday
night, February 4, as they out-
scored opponents with undefeated
records.
Senior’s matmen scored six pins
and one decision to conquer the
wrestlers of George Washington
High School in Danville, Virginia,
by the score of 35-10 on February
8.

Bulldogs, Bison Fall;
Basketeers Cop Lead
Finding themselves in position
to cop the Western AAA crown,
the Whirlies passed by two con
ference foes last week.
With their feet on the floor in
Gastonia and their thoughts in
Burlington on the Charlotte-Burl-
ington game, the Whirlies rolled
over the Green Wave 77-50 to take
undisputed possession of first place
in the conference race.
Hitting 26 of 51 field goal at
tempts aided the Whirlies in their
fight for first place. Waddell Solo
mon was high scorer for the Whir
lies with 23 points.
Playing in high spirits, the five-
some nipped the Black Bison of
High Point 41-38, February 5.
Scoring was very slow, neverthe
less the Whirlies held the lead
in the last few frantic seconds as
the Bison rallied to close the gap
Although the Whirlies engaged
a full court press. High Point set
up a zone defense which wgs the
cause for the low score. The
Greensboro five took the lead in
the first quarter by a 17-10 margin
and managed to hold on to the
lead for the remaining quarters
Half time ended with Greensboro
having a six point margin.
The timely scoring of Billy
Wolfe, together with the 11 points
of Waddell Soloman, proved the
margin.
Whirlie Quint Recovers
To Smother Maroons
A fast breaking Whirlie quint
pulled away from the Asheville
Maroons after a tight first quarter
to retain the Western AAA Con
ference lead in its 65-49 victory,
on Friday night, February 12.
The homestanding Greensboro
Club made it a one-sided contest
with a 40.4 court average. Tops
in the scoring department was Phil
Crockett tallying 15, closely fol
lowed by McDonald with 13.
Greensboro held tenaciously to
its lead through the first quarter
until Asheville made it 16 all in
the second period. The latter part
of the second quarter exploded
with Greensboro clicking on a
fast break. The third period ended
with a nearly decisive score of
48-32 with the league leading
Whirlies on top.
Eleven of Coach Bob_Jamieson’s
boys saw action against the Ma
roons with a new-comer. Bill
Lewey, totaling qn impressive 5
points in his varsity debut.
GLANCING AT THE WHIRLIES
WITH JIM
Spectators at the Whirlie basketball games have witnessed a group
whose skill and fine spirit has made it a top flight team. Here are a few
of the players who have made it so.
Waddell Solomon, forward, an
expert at ball stealing, is an all
round aggressive
gamester. Wad
dell is the little
5’ 10” player
whom you see us
ually on the f^or
or quickly taking
the ball from op
posing players.
Always a good
playmaker, he
up 197 points in 17
games, which proves he is a con-
sistant threat with hte ball.

Tommy McDonald, captain and
guard, has been the spark that
has provided GHS
with their win
ning team. Tom
my is currently
averaging about
13 points a game.
He is another
hold over from,
last year’s start
ing five. Voted
the best looking
senior. Tommy is also a member
of the Key Club.
Norman Odyniec, gufird, is an
other reserve who has seen ac
tion because of
the injuries to
two starters. Nor
man is a Junior

last year has be
come an out

is an honor
roll student and
a member of the baseball and foot
ball team, as well as a member of
the newly elected Youth Center
Council.
Don Patterson, forward, a reg
ular since he came to GHS from
Aycock, has found
his range this
season and has
supplied the team
with excellent re
bounding and
tfine defensive
maneuvers. Be
cause of an in
jured knee he
saw limited ac
tion earlier in the season, but now
along with the aid of glasses he
has helped tremendously.
Frank Jones is a guard hailing
from Proximity. Injuries to a cou
ple of regular
starters has given
Frank a chance to
prove that he is
capable of filling
in nicely. An ex
cellent see shot,
his presence on
the court has
given the Whir
lies added ad
vantage from the outside. Another
good thing is that he is only a
junior, which means he will be
eligible next year.
Phil Crockett, 6’ 4’
filling the position
center for the
second year. Phil
started his bas
ketball at Bind
ley Jr. and has
brightened that
skill into wonder- '■
ful performances.
He is a Key Club •'
member and also ^
on the traffic
squad. Playing basketball in the
winter and baseball in the spring
takes care of most of his extra
time.
Tankmen Topple 3 Senior Records
Greensboro’s swimming team
continued its winning ways in two
decisive victories over North Car
olina opponents at a borrowed
home pool at Proximity YMCA.
The tankmen toppled three Sen
ior High records in their third dual
meet of the season against the for
mer state champions from Raleigh.
Tony Schiffman, the powerful
200-yard freestyler. Bob Hubner,
a ninth grade sprinter from Bind
ley, and the 160-yard freestyle re
lay team established new school

Bulldogs Tasle Defeat
As Powerful Cagers
Enter Home Sfrelch
staging a comeback from an
early season defeat, the Greens
boro Whirlie Cagers capitalized on
the third and fourth quarters to
trample Burlington High 71-57 be
fore an over-crowded gym at Guil
ford College Monday night.
Burlington without the service
of their star center quickly found
themselves lacking in reserves in
the second half as the Whirlies
stole the lead and went on to take
an eight point lead by the end of
the quarter.
Both teams played a fast, close
guarding contest with tension
mounting on every play. The bi
partisan crowd expressed them
selves heartily with every moment
of play.
The Whirlies found themselves
trailing most of the first quarter
but finally pulled up to an 11-11
tie from a shot by Bill Wolfe with
four seconds remaining. With both
teams employing the full court
press, the second quarter became
a whirlwind of wild scoring with
Greensboro leaving the cout at
the half leading 30-28. •
Tommy McDonald sparked the
Whirlie attack with 19 points along
with Waddell Solomon and Phil
Crockett who had 14 and 13 re
spectively. The Whirlies proved a
well proportioned average as they
sank 25 out of 50 for an even 50%
accuracy. With this game won, the
Whirlie quint are assured of at
least a tie for the Western Con
ference AAA Championship.
In the third quarter, the Whir
lies pulled out into an eight point
spread and widened this margin in
the final stanza as they won by 14
points.
