O. in full swing, everyone’s mind is on the little white pill and the long black sticks, but here at Senior other spring sport attractions are in ac tion and again GHS is well repre sented by its athletic teams. Over on the track side, Coach Lody Glenn has his boys drilling for their first meet today over in Winston-Salem. Heading the list this year will be Harry Lee Moore, Dave Scurlock, Claude Ward, Louis Glascock, and Arthur Baldaracchi. Buddy Dcbruhl, another trackster: spends about as much time on the baseball field as he does running. The other day Coach Julian Smith had him catching in the place of Tommy Nance. In the golf department, chal lenging matches have begun and many new faces can be seen on the links. Heading the returnees are Gene Smith, Bill Rightsell,,Ed Morrisett, Ed Sweetman, and Tom Wagg. A promising junior is Steve Talley. On the baseball diamond things are taking shape with the first conference game scheduled for Tuesday with Burlington. The probable starting lineup will find Bill Lewey, a sophomore, at first base; Norm Odyniec, a hust ler at second base and either Wal ter Williams or Teddy Burcham at third. At shortstop will be an improved fielder and a competent hitler in the form of C. L. Nabors. This year’s outfield will be the same with Jack Purgason in left, C. W. Bolling in center; and David Thompson in right. Bob Barnes is also fighting for starting berth in outfield. Bob’s hitting has im proved and this should serve the other boys warning. Tommy Nance will do the catch ing and he should again be the leading hitter. So far this spring he has been hitting at a hefty clip. Danville Defeats GHS In Season Opener, 7-0 Coach Julian Smith’s baseball team opened the season last Thurs day with Danville on the home field but they were shutout 7-C by the hard-hitting Virginia out fit. The visiting team jumped to a three to nothing lead in the first inning and went on to score two more in the third and two in the fifth. Lefty Jerry Purgason pitched the first five innings for Greens boro and Fritz Apple finished up. Left hander Dave Smily limited the Whirlies to 4 hits with Jack Purgason collecting two of these. Smiiy seemed to get stronger as the game progressed. After the first inning, the Whirlies never again threatened. A dispute on a caught line drive led Danville to their last two runs. Dave Thompson appeared to have caught the ball, but the umpire ruled it a trapped ball and two runs later scored. Everyone knows the Whirlie swimming team tied for the state crown, but everyone does not know that they almost didn’t make it in time for the meet. It seems the Whirlibird had some engine trou ble and the boys had to thumb part of the way.
