Miller Selected Candidate For Academy Assignment “Up into the wild blue yonder!” And that's extealy where Max Mill er, a senior, is headed—if he has anything to do with it. It happened like this: Some time ago, Max heard that there were going to be several appointments to the new Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He went to speak to Senator Kerr Scot in Raleigh about the possi bility of his candidacy. On Wednes day night of last week Max got the phone call that may determine his future—he was chosen as the candidate from this section of the state to compete for this grant. An appointment to this newly- formed academy would be com parable to a West Point appoint ment, except that it is not purely political and there is more compe tition involved. Each state is al lowed up to 140 candidates. Seven from each will be chosen. These grants cover the four-year course and ^low each boy $80 per month. Max’s own interest lies in elec trical engineering, radio, and re lated fields. If Max attains this appointment, he will enter in July; four years from now he ^ill come out an officer in the United States Air Force. Also he will be able to tell his great-grandchildren that he graduated from the Air Force Academy with the first graduating class. “I haven’t quite decided yet,” replied Max, when asked if he plans to be accompanied by his violin. Maic feels that he has acquired a very good background at GHS. Max is one of the few boys who is an Explorer Scout. He is in the school orchestra and was elect ed to the All-State Orchestra. As an extra activity. Max is one of those fellows known as a “ham”— a ham radio operator, that is. yet he ended his days in almost total obscurity. The largest iron ship ever made was called THE GREAT EAST ERN. This ship was so large that it would not have been able to pass through the Panama Canal. It was so deep that it would not have been able to pass through the Suez Canal. A thrilling account of this ship is told in James Dugan’s, THE GREAT IRON SHIP. I hope you will enjoy reading some of these new books that have been placed in the library. Stop and Shop Store Phone 7076 1230 S. ELM ORANGE CRUSH BOTTLING GO. Bottlers of ORANGE CRUSH. Although the NROTC_ award is very valuable. Max would prefer the Air Force award, since this is more what he wants in the way of a career. The next step for Max is to take the test with the other candidates in the state. All Max can say is, “I've got my fingers crossed!” Grad Gab By Josie Ward SONNY BISHOP, who graduated last June, is now playing the drums in the Air Force Band in Georgia.
