May 6, 195 f High Life Page Seven 11 Couples Of Synonyms Members Of High School Did you know that there are twenty-two synonyms at Senior High? Extraordinary as it may seemr there are eleven sets of people at school who well qualify for “The Name’s the Same.” Some vary by a letter or two, but the names sound enough alike to be very confusing upon occasions. Two of them, Carol Apple, and Carolyn Apple, seniors, are even in the same home room. Just imag ine roll call with two Apples bob bing up together. Miss Joann Scott and Miss Joanne Scott have made things considerab ly harder for students by being teachers. They even go so far as to teach the same subjects. Two fellows who wear identical nameplates are Jerry Varner and Jerry Varner. But Jerry Varner is a senior; so next year, if things run smoothly, Jerry Varner will have the sole honor of the name Jerry Varner. Bob Miller and Bob by Miller are in the same boat as the Jerry’s. But with graduation just around the corner. Bob Miller optimistically states that, “Things are looking up for us Bob Mil ler’s!” Marie and Margie seem to be closely related also, especially when they both have a Mitchell tacked on the end of these monick ers. Deanna Dixon and Dianne Dixon have something in common with Marie and Margie, for their names are close enough to be easily confused. When Deanna and Marie graduate on May 31, they will be two of the very few people who can boast leaving their names behind. One surprising thing is that, while there are quite a few Smith’s and Jon'e’s at GHS, there are no duplicate first names. There is an abundance of Betty’s. Jane’s, Bob’s Dick’s, John’s and Judy’s around, but none of them could agree on a last name. However, Bill Ward and Bill Ward obviously hit a very happy medium when they chose names. But one happened to beat the other by a whole year, so one is a sophomore while the other rates juniorhood. Two girls who giggle every time they think about the similarity of their names are Carol Barber and Carole Barber. Being in the same French class presents quite a prob lem, but the junior partner is known as Carole Barber room 6; the other one, a sophomore, is Carol Barber room 12. Imagine having an anticedent all your life! Jefferson was a Davis, and per haps that’s why two certain girls didn’t choose “Jeff” as a front flicker . . . they didn’t want to be confused with the original. But problems will always arise. The Davis girls are Carolyn and Caro lina. This proves to be quite a diction test for their home room teacher. “Nancy Martin, come here this minute!” shouts the teacher. But what Is a poor pedagogue to think when two Nancy Martin’s come bounding to her beck and call? This is a very possible problem, for within the halls of Ye Olde Alma Mater there are two Nancy Martins. But the situation is eased slightly by the fact that one is a sophomore and the other a junior. So if you call someone and some two come running, as in the case of the two Nancy Martin’s, per haps you will understand. It isn’t April Fool, they’re merely a cou ple of synonyms. Graham Winner Of (ivifan Essay Contest Susan Graham has been named state winner of the Civitan Club essay contest on “Privileges and Duties of Citizenship.” Susan was a county winner several weeks ago and received a $15 award on her essay.
