Page Four HIGH LIFE SPORTS SECTION March 9, 1956 Whirlie Wrestlers Capture State*s Crown GHS Cagers Defeafed By Asheville Maroons For Conference Seat ■ While their wrestling, brethren were sewing up the state grappling crown, the GHS basketeers drop ped a 61-57 decision to Asheville in a vital play-off for the final spot in the AA state tourney which began here on Wednesday. The game was a special play-off between the two teams who fin ished in a deadlock for fourth in the West. It was played on a neutral site at Salisbury. By winning, the defending state champs came into the state tour ney. Forward Bruce Peterson again led the Asheville attack as he did in the 74-37 rout of the Whir- lies played last Tuesday. Peterson garnered 20 points. Owen Johnson led the Whirlies with a like total of 20 points. Doug Albright scored 14. The game was close all the way. Greensboro led at the end of the first quarter, 14-11. In the second period the mountain boys pulled ahead and lead at halftime 25-24. Asheville pushed ahead by as much as 50-40 before the Whirlies could rally. Johnson and Paul Dyson sparked a drive that tied the score, 53-53. After a 55-55 tie, Wilson, Peter son, and Weaver added 6 points and won in the last few seconds. The Whirlies got only 19 field goals as compared with 26 by Asheville. Greensboro stayed in contention as they connected on 19 out of 30 free throws. InframuralBasketbal! Draws Large Number For Annual Tourney Seventy-one boys are currently taking part in the intramural basketball program which is un der the direction of Coach Pat Earey. There are 11 teams, ranging in na.me from the Warriors and the Knicks to the Rebels and Chris tians. The boys participating in these after-school events formed their own teams some two weeks ago and presented their squads to Coach Earey for entry. The ^Vinners of this intramural con test will receive medals as recog nition for their victory. The teams are engaging in a round-robin schedule. Two games a day are played each day start- at 4:30 in the boys’ gym. Following is a list of the teams and the boys on their respective squads. Forming the Warriors’ team are Donny Harrington, Zeke McFay- den. Bill Sheppard, Jerry Kinney, Jimmy Schoffner, Donald Dean and Johnny Britt. BLUE BIRD CLEANERS 1613 MADISON AVE. Bobby Taylor, Jim Everitt, Steve Schlosser, Gary Snider, Tommy Ogum, and Richard Long make up the fighting cagers called the Knicks. Representa tives of the Dukes are Larry Heath, Bill Godfrey, Roger Hobbs, Clyde Elkin, Frank Fritchman, Furman Busby and Don Dyson. Participants on the S t a t e s’ team are C. D. Tripp, George Varsamis, Tommy Sain, Bob Ta- born, Jimmy Kessler, and Spen cer Gaylord. Buddy Watkins, Eugene LeBauer, Sam Le Bauer, Phil Causey, Shelley Morganstern, Pat Haley, and Paul Robinson form the Magician cagers. Tar Heels are John Jester. Lou Glascock, Dave Wible, Ed Fish Win Duke Invitational Over Four Other Schools Coach Pat Earey's swimmers competed in two events last week, winning one and dropping the other. The mermen came home victor ious in the Duke Invitational at Durham, defeating four other North Carolina high school teams. The Whirlies took five out of the nine first places. Raleigh was the runner-up. Bob Hubner, Tom Schenck, Don Rothrock, Bill Wil- Hudgins, John Burwell, and Ranny liamson and Manley Dodson. Sam 'Dodson took individual first places. Edwards, Ken Robinson, Derwin Pope, Jack Fjeld, Benny Rainey, Bill Saunders and Bob Rivenbark compose the fighting Wildcats of the intramural sports scope. Members of the Celtics are Paul Sams, Billy Hammer, Johnny Murphy, Jasper Swofford, Phil “Bo” Whitt, and C. E. Jacobs. Davis Wilson, Bob Guffey, For rest Ferrell, Dennis Maynard, Sonny Shoffner, and Bill Hodges form a squad with the title of Bears. Representatives of the solid- South and tagged with the name of Rebels are Tommy Smith, Wallace Williams, Baxter Smith, Cary Matthews, Herbert Du- maresq. and Max Snodderly. End ing the line of intramurals are the Christians composed of mem bers Eddie Butler, Jimmy Wrenn, Arnold Waynick, Mickey Cook, Jackie Bruner, and Arthur Beck. In the other meet, the Whirlies were swamped by the UNC frosh 59-27. Former Whirlie Tony Schiffman led the Tar Babies as he took two first places. Bob Hub ner took one first place for the Whirlies. Schiffman, Zwicker) Boone Places Second With Goldsboro Third With four boys winning indi vidual championships. Coach Lody Glenn’s grapplers won the North Carolina wrestling crown by edg ing the Boone matment 103 to 102 here last Saturday. Bert Wilder in the heavyweight class, Sammy Bright in the 175- pound class, Charlie Whedbee in the 165-pound classification, and Benny McKee in the 120-pound class, were the four Senior High boys who annexed individual state crowns. Wilder won the final event and thereby gained enough points for the team triumph. The Whirlies succeed the High Point Black Bis on as state champs. In addition to the four boys who won championships, Dwight Wit ty, Kent Carter, and Harvey Dak- tor each fought his way to the finals before losing decisions. David Levy at 112 pounds and Lou Cavan at 127 pounds won con solation crowns. Here are the final standings for the tourney. 1. Greensboro 103 2. Boone 102 3. Goldsboro ( 88 4. Salisbury 52 5.
