May 25, 1956 HichIjfb Pime Nine Ruby Yarber Speaks On Business Subjects For D. 0. Members April 9, Mrs. Ruby J. Yarber from Pilot Life Insurance Com pany spoke to the D.O. office group on entering the business world. In her speech Mrs. Yarber pointed out the essentials for achieving success in today's busi ness world. She told the three D.O. office practice groups that appearance, personality, and skill are all important in keeping a job. In addition, an employee should be neat and clean in ap pearance at all times. The necessity of a pleasant per sonality is strong. It combines co operation, friendliness, good at titude), patience, humil^y, and ability to get along with other people. “Without skill of some kind, you could not hold a job very long. You must have the technical skills and ambition to do the work,” said Mrs. Yarber. To end her talk, she stated that it is never wise ^to go job hunting. An analysis of hobbies or interests can lead to a job that proves more favorable than one chosen in a haphazard way. Seniors Apply To Colleges Throughout United States Greensiboro Senior High School’s attend Elon and one Georgia graduating seniors have applied chis year to mai.y colleges—some of which are scattered all over the United States. Out of a class of approximately 500, 353 transcripts have been sent to various colleges. Of these 353, 237 seniors have been ac cepted and now know which col lege they will attend. 56 Apply At One School Beginning with Agnes Scott and continuing through Woman’s Col lie, as many as 56 students have applied to one particiUar school while only one person has applied to many others. Two seniors have applied at Agnes Scott, eight at Appalach ian State Teachers College, and one each to Bob Jones, Boston Conservatory, and Brevard. Camp bell and Catawba are each ex pecting two GHS graduates while Centenary Junior expects tone, Citadel one and Converse, five. There will be two Greensboro students attending Darlington School For Boys, one attending Davidson, and 11 attending Duke. Hampton Sidney, High Point, Hol lins, Lake Erie, and Lee Colleges will each have one Senior High alumni among their incoming Freshmen Class. Nursiiig Schools to Have 14 Three Greensboro students will attend Lees McRae; two will go to Mars Hill; and one each to Mary Washington, National Bus iness College, and Northwestern. GHS will be represented by 14 students at nursing schools while Oberlin will have one representa tive. Randolph-Macon, three, and Richmond Professional Institute, one. St. Mary’s and Salem each ex pect five Senior High students. State expects 20, and both Stet son and Stratford expect two. Three GHS’ers will raster at SuUins this fall, while two will register at Sweet Briar and one at both Tusculum and the Uni versity of Missouri. Large Number at University The graduating class of 1960 at the University will include 27 members from Greensboro High School, while there will be 11 at Wake Forest. Two of GHS’s 1956 class will attend West Carolina, one plans to enter West Carolina, and one plans to enter Westhampton. Woman’s College in Greensboro will claim the largest majority of the 237 Greensboro Senior High School students who have been ac cepted at the various colleges. Greene St. Parkins Wins Second in Essay Competition Jane Parkins, a junior at Senior High, won second prize of $200 in the 1956 Co-operative Essay Contest which took place in Ral eigh, North Carolina, Friday, April 27. After winning the county and district contests, Jane competed with four other district winners from North and South Carolina by giving an after dinner speech of her essay on the subject “How Our Farm Surplus Can Help Win the Battle for World Peace.” The essays had been judged previous ly for the purpose of averaging the decisions of the reading judges with the decisions of the hearing judges in order to determine the winner. The contest was in the ballroom of the Student Union Building on the dta/te Ctollege campus. Previous winners of the contest were honorary guests at the ban quet which preceded the speaking contest.
