September 21, 1956 High Life Page Three GHS Band Directors Pick New Majorettes Constituting the new gi*oup of majorettes for this year are Betty Kemodle, Maxine Callisher, Bar bara Cook, Meyressa Hughes, and Sue Ellen Barker, all of whom were chosen by a board of band directors. Sue Ellen Barker is the new addition to the majorettes. She was head majorette at Bindley, and this i^ the third year she has been twirling the baton. Among lier activities, she lists treasurer of home room 311 and French Horn player in the concert band. Head majorette this year is Bet ty Kemodle, a senior with four years experience. She is secretary of home room 303, a member of the LSP Club, and plays bass clar inet in the concert band. Other seniors in the group are Maxine Callisher and Barbara Cook. Maxine and Barbara are both members of the LSP’s and the concert band. Meyressa Hughes, jimior. Is a member of the Science Club, the concert band, and is vice presi dent of the Signets. The de^rably loudmouthed cheerlead ers are as follows; Phil Causey, headche^leader, Myma Autry, Dianne Dixon, Dot Maddox, Phyl lis Steed, Gail Perkins, Bradley Anderson, Marsha Bumpass, Lin da Jo Thompson, Kay Wallace, and Ellen Fi^ds. Belk's Studios In Charge Of 'Whirligig's' Pictuires Torchlight Meets; Chooses New Officers Jean Ogbum, senior, was elect- ed president of Torchlight at the first meeting, which took place in the conference room of the library last Friday, S^tem- ber 14. Other officers elected were David Craig, vice-presadent;. Nancy Lambeth, secretary; and For the second year Kenneth Plott of Belk’s Studio in Greens boro and Bill Hines of Belk-Leg- gett Studios in Danville, Virginia are taking ^the students’ pictures for the school yearbook, WHIRL IGIG, in the basement of the boys’ gym. Seniors were photographed first, starting Monday, September 10, followed by the juniors and sopho mores. The photographers took approximately 240 pictures a day, which took the annual staff, head ed by Jane McLennon and Kay Wood, co-editors, iiearly two hours each day to plan the appoint ments. The studios charged each student one dollar for four proofs. Senior girls were draped in the pictures same as last year, and junior and sophomore girls wore dark sweaters with pearls. All the boys donned their suits and ties to be photographed. Contracts have already been signed by the presidents of the various clubs and organizations at Senior High, who want a page or a picture in the annual. The club pictures will be taken fii'st preceding all the others, and the sport scenes shot as they hap pen. This year's WHIRLIGIG will consist cf 264 pages, 16 more than last year. Last spring the yearbook class, from which are chosen stu dents for the top positions on the staff, began planning and drawing the dummy. They chose the theme and designed every page. WHIRLIGIG’S subscription campaign usually starts about six , weeks after the start of school. Youth Recreation Committee Plans Numerous Activities For This Year This year the youth recreation committee, sponsored by the PT^A and the Parks and Recreation Department, is a new organiza,- tion, having an Adult Advisory Committee of six members who guide and supervise the activities. The officers of the youth rec reation committee this year are: Libby Garvin, Chairman; Eliza beth Antrim, vice - chairman; Paula Sain, secretary; Dick Lam beth, treasurer; Stratton Eldridge, reporter. Miss Pat Basinger is the adviser and Mrs. W. Beatty Farr is the recreation chairman for the PTSA. Oth^ Members Other members are Maxine Cal lisher, Tom Hudgins, Bobby Jo- hannesen, Liz Sutton, Marie White, Husty Brown, Evelyn Byrd, Nancy McDowell, Jim McGregor, Bobby McNairy, Laura Pearce, and Kay Wallace. The sophomores will be elected at the time of the Student Council elections. Nine will be elected, as there is a ratio of one repre sentative to every 75 students. Open houses after the home games are the main objects of the plans now. Membership cards have been issued to all students, and they must be presented for admittance at any function of the recreation committee. Television Show A teenage TV show, “Youth Gives Its Views,” is in the planning stages. This program will deal with problems of local teen-agers, >and the participants will be Senior High students. Plans are also be ing made for the youth recreation committee to sponsor lessons in bridge, dancing and modeling. Anyone who is interested in helping with plans and open houses, is welcomed to do so. Conduct Buies The rules which are on the back of the membership card have been copied below as a reminded to the student’s responsibility bo the Youth Recreation committee. 1. All activities are solely for the high school students unless otherwise specified. 2. 'There will be no smoking in the buildings at any time. 3. Conduct becoming ladies and gentlemen is expected at all times. 4. Membership cards are not transferable, and any violation of this or the above mentioned ruels, shall result in the removel of priv ileges for youth recreation com mittee activities and the removal I of membership cards for the re- I mainder of the year.
