October 19, 1956 High Life Page Five Connie Gorsuch Is Victor Of Many Tournaments Seventeen-year-old GHS senior, Connie Gorsuch, spendei (much of her time on her hobby, which is playing golf. Connie has held the title of Greensboro Amateur Woman’s Golf Champion for the last two years. Several days ago she com peted at the Starmount Forest Country Club Golf Course for the Piedmont Woman’s Championship. This, according to Connie, is her biggest win to date. She com peted with approximately 52 wo men from all over the Piedmont section of North Carolina and emerged winner. Most Exciting Moment Connie thought the most ex citing moment in the match came when “I made an eagle on the seventh hole.” Since she was in the last match Connie had no idea she had won until after she had eaten lunch. ‘’It was a nice feeling to have the winner’s trophy handed me.” Although Connie has won ap proximately 20 first and second place trophies, the match that has meant the most to her was her first tournament, the North Carolina State Woman’s Cham pionship, which was held in Bur lington. Connie was the youngest to ever qualify for this particular event. In 1955, she went to the semi finals in the Championship Con solation at the U. S. She was runner-up in the North and South Carolina Girls’ Juniors in Burlington this past summer This same year we find Connie in Huntington, West Virginia for the Womans’ Western in which she was runner-up in the first flight. Connie began playing golf as a hobby , when she was 12 having received her first clubs as a birth day present. Preceding her start in competitive golf Connie met her ideal, the late Babe Zaharius, at the Starmount Forest Course. Parents Enthusiastic Even though neither Mr. nor Mrs. Gorsuch plays golf, they are enthusiastic about their daughter’s matches. “They think it’s fine,” Connie comments. Connie’s nine- year-old brother has followed in her footsteps as far as golf is concerned. He played in his first competitive match at the age of six at Pinehurst. Conine says, “He’s pretty good, too.” Connie practices her golf every day for an hour or so on weekdays and at least two hours on week ends. She likes to play golf “for the fun of playing golf,” but she doesn’t want to be a professional player. After her graduation from GHS next spring Connie hopes to attend Wake Forest.
