October 19, 1956 High Life Page Nine I Numerous Guides, Books Available In GHS Library For College Day College Day is coming October 24, so this column is devoted to calling attention to helpful ma terials concerning colleges. All of these books, pamphlets, and maga- iiine articles are available in the Senior High School Library. FINE’S AMERICAN COLLEGE COUNSELOR AND GUIDE gives lull information on all accredited American colleges and universities, including religious denominations, extra-curricular activities, academ ic requirements, tuition fees and costs, facilities offered, location, scholarships, curricula, faculties, enrollment, athletics, laboratories, social life, and hundreds of other necessary facts. The author of this guide, Benjamin Pine, examined every available source regarding the American College scene to get this latest information on every aspect of college admission re quirements. He has come up with the perfect working tool which quickly brings the facts about ev ery American college [to one’s fingertips. It is a recent publica tion, having been copyrighted in 1955. Other Guides Available Another guide which is available is AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AP^ COLLEGES; seventh edition, copyrighted in 1956. Prom this guide one is able to obtain infor mation about all types of pro- fesional schools, such as those which give courses leading to pro fessional degrees in dentistry, journalism, law , librarianship, music, and religious education. Moreover, there is a section which gives all of the information for each college; this is arranged al phabetically by states, then by colleges within each state. Since both of the above men tioned college guides are very ex pensive, and since they contain information not locate^ elsewhere, it is necesary to find out from one of the librarians where they are located in the Senior High Library. H. AHD H. CLOTHIHG COMPANY Ladies’ and Gents’ School and Sunday Clothes in all sizes Cash or Credit Greensboro, N. C. Elizabeth Antrim, senior, is a mem ber of the High School Board of Fashions. Every well-dressed girl knows she must look her best from head to toe, and neglecting her feet can spoil the whole effect of her outfit. Shoes for school, however, seem to be in a rut—^the everlasting loafers! Ellis Stone has come up with a solution that seems to be terrific. Here are some saddle shoes—but look again. No longer are they clod-hoppers, so heavy it’s a chore to walk, and so roomy feet look like pancakes.. These shoes are of a lower cut, so small that they are almost dainty with a sportish air, and light! A girl might just as well be walking on the clouds. Drag into Ellis Stone's shoe department on the Street Floor, ask for saddle shoes by Sandler of Boston, pay a trifling $8.75, and dance out. But wait a minute! Now’s the tdnie to get those in dispensable bobby socks, needed in every wardrobe.Roll them up; wear them with bermudas. Roll them down; wear them to school. As every girl should have a stock of these, get the socks by Bonnie Doon on the Street Floor . . . Only 79 cents per pair. The pamphlet entitled SHOULD YOU GO TO COLLEGE? should be read by every student consider ing college. Several common mis takes to avoid are mentioned, such as don’t plan your future educa tion without consulting all avail able sources of information. Don’t choose your college hurriedly Don’t be swayed by such factors as where your friends are going, Don’t delay in making a decision. Don’t allow the decision to be made for you because you didn’t take the trouble to make it your self. This pamphlet may be bor rowed for home use. Articles For Parents The September 1956 issue of the magazine CHANGING TIMES contains an interesting article ad dressed to parents. “Will Your Youngster Qualify For College?” is the question that is asked. The statement is made in answer to the question that he (the young ster) won’t get in college unless he takes the right courses in high school. It suggests further that parents start him planning early. SENIOR SCHOLASTIC MAGA ZINE, September 27, 1956 issue, has an interesting discussion to the question “Are you sure you can go to college?” Seventy-eightcoi- lege admission officers point ou that of those denied college ad mission 61.5 per cent are becaiise of low high school grades; 25.5 per cent are because of lack of specific subject matter; and 13 per cent are because of lack of ability. TheOctober 4, 1956 issue of this same magazine has a fol low-up article in which the three steps to college admission are considered; these are,\ in brief, early planning, “solid” subject matter, and good grades. Home Use Permitted Of course, the college catalogues for North Carolina colleges and many out of state colleges are housed in the Senior High Library and may be borrowed for home use. These catalogues are also available in the Guidance Center located in the Vocational Building on the campus. Across American poet Movie “Bad —— Greeiisboro Drug Company FRED B.
