Page Four HIGH LIFE SPORTS SECTION November 2,1956 Bob McNairy^s Key Plays Aid Team To Gain Victory Two key plays made by Bob McNairy provided the insurance the Whirlies needed to pull out a hard fought 13-7 win over the Salisbury Yellow Jackets last week. McNairy, early in the game, picked up a fumble in Whirlie territory and raced it out to the 32-yard-line. Salisbury had taken the opening kick-off, and with fullback Doug Pulton and tail back George Knox leading the way, they had marched to the Whirlies’ 8-yard line. There Mc Nairy broke through to pick up a fumble and take the Whirlies out of a jam. Jayvees Stay Unbeaten; Clobber High Point 32-0 On a mud-caked and slippery field, the Senior High Jayvees continued their undefeated way, as they defeated High Point 32-0 last Tuesday in Senior High Stad ium. It was the sixth straight win without a tie for the Jayvees. They have defeated Guilford High, Burlington JV’s twice, High Point JV’s twice, and the Winston-Salem JV’s once. Five different players figured in the scoring for the Jayvees. Jerry Kennon started the on slaught by racing 15 yards for the first TD in the first quarter. Richard Squires complete the scoring for the first half when he ran 10 yards on a dive play. At the half it was 13-0. In the second half the Jayvees poured it on with touchdowns by Bill Swofford, Mike Wachter, and Leroy Griffin. Griffin’s TD came on a 20-yard pass, while Wachter ran about 30 yards for his. After giving the ball back to the Yellow Jackets for four plays the Whirlies marched 39 yards for the first touchdown. Lofus Neese, a Whirlie scatback, went over on a third down play from the one yard line. McNairy’s kick was no good for the extra point. The Blue and White threatened once more in the first half, mov ing to the Salisbury four, but they were stopped ther as the half ended, Salisbury recovered a fumble on the second half kickoff and took advantage of that by quickly scor ing. They recovered on the Greens boro 19 and scored in three plays, George Knox doing the honors from the eight-yard line. The ex tra point was good and the Whir lies were behind for the first time all year, 7-6. This seemed to put fire in the eyes of Coach Jamieson’s boys. Taking the ensuing kickoff they marched 68 yards, using 13 plays, for the winning TD. Bobby Brown went over from the three-yard line. That put the Whirlies out in front 13-7, and that’s the way it ended. It remained for that same McNairy again to pull the Whirl winds out of a hole, though. Late in the fourth quarter Salisbury drove to the Greensboro 23 by using their passes effectively. On fourth down from the 25 the Yel low Jackets attempted a pass. Mc Nairy was there to grab it and all the Whirlies had to do was stall for the next minute and a half. The Whirlie defense was very good as it held Salisbury to less than 100 yards altogether. Harold Wrenn called a fine game at quarterback as he replaced Currie Singletary as the number one man. Coach Bob amieson watches intently as his undefeated Whirlies prepare for their struggle tonight with High Point tonight shrdlu with High Point at 8 o’clock. Juniors Ploy Large Port In 49-0 Win Over Danville Whirlies Piay High Point; Bison Has Poor Record Senior’s undefeated Whirlies take the field against the High Point Black Bison tonight in a Western AAA conference game at High point. High point, having a poor sea son, should prove nothing but practice material for the Whirlies, The Bison have a 1-4 conference record, the lone win being over Burlington, which is at the bottom of the conference. A punchless of fense combined with a weak de fense has held the Bison near the bottom of the standings this season. The Whirlies .should be in top shape for the contest with the key men in good physical condi tion. After last week’s win over Salisbury only High Point and Burlington remain as obstacles to the conference title. Coach Bob Jamieson unleashed a fleet of swift junior backs against Danville, and the Whirlies proceeded to crush the Cai'dinals by a 49-0 score in a contest play ed in Senior High Stadium Octo ber 20. To gain experience, Coach Jam ieson turned loose his juniors or what will be the team next year in the rout. These boys played most of the evening while the first stringers sat on the bench. Danville was handicapped early in the game. The Whirlies kicked off and the Danville back fum bled the ball. It took the Blue and White only three plays to go over. Larry Rogers and Currie Singletary carrying eight yards each with Singletary scoring from the one. Moments later the Whirlies re covered another Cardinal fumble, this time on the 33. Lofus Neese countered soon after, running 15 yards to make it 14-0. After that the juniors took over. Roger Hobbs and Dave Albaugh scored before the half to give the Whirlies a 28-0 edge. Tommy Kitzmiller scored twice in the second half with tfhe aid of some fancy footwork. Clayton Stanley got credit for a safety after Kitzmiller’s first score. End John Davis completed the scoring for the night when he caught a TD pass from Larry Wachter after Roger Hobbs raced back an intercepted pass. After Davis’ score only two seconds remained in the contest and it was 47-0.
